His Toxic Addiction-Chapter 397: Left In The Dark
Chapter 397: Left In The Dark
The living room turned quiet.
Mr. Adams took in another soft gulp, trying to pull himself out of the fire he had just landed himself into. His first intention was to speak to Nicklaus and not Arissa. However, when Nicklaus asks Arissa to tag along, he assumes Nicklaus already told her everything and decides to openly speak to Nicklaus about it.
Clearing his throat, Mr. Adams picked a side and began, "The Lin_"
"Oh! Fuck!" Nicklaus cursed under his breath when Mr. Adams began speaking. He clenched his fist and tried to calm himself down.
Mr. Adams stretched his legs out and continued, "The Lin family buried their head a few days before your wedding to Nicklaus. Zhou Lin, the CEO of the Lin Cooperation has a daughter who would have been given to Nicklaus immediately for marriage but when Alfred proposed to them, they decided to give him a try instead since the benefits that would come from him are higher than that of the Lin family," he explained.
Arissa frowned, "And now?"
Nicklaus picked up from where Mr. Adams stopped, "He’s asking if I’ll choose the shares from the Lin family over you. Choosing the shares means I’ll let you off and get married to Lin’s heiress,"
Arissa turned to face Nicklaus and held his gaze. Nicklaus held Arissa’s gaze and took her hand in his. Gently squeezing her both palms in his, he said, "I don’t think that should bother you,"
"Me too," Arissa nodded, "I don’t think I should be bothered but you should be. You’re a businessman and from my father, I know how much you all want every tiny share that comes your way," she smiled at Nicklaus and took her hand off his hold.
Mr. Adams felt disturbed when he heard Arissa still addressing Alfred as her father. Nevertheless, he did not let a glimpse of that thought show on his face.
"I’ll be in the room if you need me," Arissa wiped the forceful smile off her lips and stood up from the couch.
Nicklaus caught hold of her wrist before she would take a step. He stood straight and held both of her hands in his, "I’m done here. Let’s go together,"
Arissa bit her low lips on her gum to stop herself from asking him to stay away from her. She wasn’t happy with what she just come to know about.
Remembering how hard she had been trying to force him to say something, she felt madder. She hates the feeling of being left in the dark and he keeps on making sure he leaves her in the dark.
Does he think she can’t handle minor issues like this if he speaks to her?
Nodding, Arissa took her hands off his hold and turned away from him. Seeing her about to walk away from him, Nicklaus immediately stood beside her and held her hand in his.
Arissa ignored the sudden hold and let him walk with her that way into his room which can now be said to be their room.
Nicklaus let go of her hand when they got into their room. Closing the door behind them, he stood by the door and watched her walk towards the bed.
Quietly, Arissa tied her hair into a bun and lay on the bed. She did not bother about taking her shoes off.
Nicklaus released a low sigh and walked towards the bed. He sat by her leg side and helped to take off her shoes from her legs.
Thereafter, he began massaging each one of them. Arissa stayed quiet as she let him do his thing. She fixed her eyes on his balcony glass, trying not to overthink. Nicklaus’s eyes never left Arissa’s face as he took care of her feet.
Sighing softly, Arissa said in a low voice, "I have a right to know," she broke the strong silence between them.
Nicklaus’s breathing became normal again when she finally said a word to him. He brought her feet to his lips and kissed them before climbing the bed to her level.
Laying beside her, he wrapped his hand around her waist, pulled her closer to himself, and dropped a peak on her neck.
"Yes Love, you have every right to know but I was trying to protect you," his voice was coated with deep regret. His hand moved up to her stomach and then, he buried his face into her back.
Arissa placed a hand over his hand holding her stomach and stroked him gently, "Protect me from what?" she asked softly.
"From a lot of things. I’m so sorry you got entangled with someone like me_"
"Huh?" Arissa cut him off and turned over to him. She held both sides of his face in her slim palms. Searching his deep black eyes, she went on, "You sound frightened. What are you scared of? I am your wife, you can tell me anything. What bothers you?"
Rather than giving her a reply, Nicklaus pressed her body into his from behind her and sealed their lips together.
Arissa pushed him away the moment he sealed their lips together, "No Nick, stop. I’m so sorry but don’t use that to avoid my question. If there’s something I need to know, tell me any of it," her voice came out trembling, unlike her usual poised self.
The nightmare troubled her and his reactions now weren’t soothing her. Not even a little. Rather, he leaves her more frightened.
"Your voice is trembling," Nicklaus noticed. He gazed into her eyes and immediately pulled her into his chest, affectionately.
"I’m so sorry," he apologized, "For now, I want you to know that I’ll choose you over a hundred percent shares,"
A strand of tears left her eyes. Her voice choked, "I know you will. I don’t need to doubt that but why hide it from me?"
Nicklaus gave her soft pats and multiple kisses on her head before replying, "It not in my slightest wish to involve you with matters concerning me. My affairs are too complicated for you to get involved. I don’t want you to stay close,"
