Zara kept her weapon trained on Kellan, her finger resting lightly on the trigger. His smirk didn't falter as he raised his hands in a show of mock surrender. The hum of his makeshift control center filled the tense silence, its flickering monitors displaying maps, data streams, and power grids.

Rowan shifted uneasily beside her, glancing at Zara for direction.

"You've got about ten seconds to explain why we shouldn't shut this operation down," Zara said, her tone ice-cold.

Kellan tilted his head, his smirk softening into something almost genuine. "You're the cautious type. Smart. But if you take this down, you're killing the only chance you have to survive the next wave."

"What wave?" Rowan interjected, his voice sharp.

Kellan gestured toward the monitors. "The undead aren't the only problem anymore. Something's driving them, organizing them. You've seen it yourself, haven't you? They're moving in patterns, striking with precision."

Zara's grip on her weapon tightened, memories of the Zombie King flashing through her mind. "Keep talking."

Kellan pointed to one of the screens, which displayed a thermal map of the city. Bright red clusters indicated massive heat signatures spreading across the region.

"This isn't random," he continued. "The heat patterns show coordinated movements. Someone—or something—is pulling the strings. I've been tracking it for weeks, and I've narrowed it down to one location. Problem is, I can't get close without backup."

Zara lowered her weapon slightly, her eyes narrowing. "And you think we're your backup?"

"You're better equipped than most, and you've made it this far," Kellan said, his tone almost admiring. "I've got the intel; you've got the firepower. We could work together."

Rowan snorted. "You expect us to trust you just like that?"

Kellan shrugged. "Trust is a luxury these days. But if you don't take this chance, the next wave will wipe out whatever's left of this city. Your call."

Zara studied him, weighing her options. The survivors she'd sworn to protect were counting on her to lead them to safety, but Kellan's intel was too significant to ignore.

"What's in it for you?" she asked, her voice cautious.

Kellan's smirk returned. "Let's just say I have a personal stake in taking down whoever's behind this mess. And if we succeed, you'll get the safe haven you're looking for."

Zara exchanged a glance with Rowan. He gave a reluctant nod, his expression wary but resolute.

"Fine," Zara said, holstering her weapon. "But if this is a trap, I'll put you down myself."

Kellan chuckled. "Fair enough. Follow me—I'll show you what we're up against."

As Kellan led them deeper into the subway tunnel, Zara couldn't shake the feeling that they were stepping into something far bigger than they'd anticipated. The faint glow of his control center faded behind them, replaced by the oppressive darkness of the unknown.

For better or worse, their fates were now intertwined.
