The team barely made it past the library’s central chamber when the temperature plummeted. Frost crawled over the stone walls, and a bone-chilling wind howled through the shelves. Rook tightened his grip on his rifle, scanning the dim corridor ahead.

"Something isn’t happy we took the book," Shadow muttered, her sniper rifle ready.

"Understatement of the year," Ghost said as a deep, resonant voice echoed through the library.

"Who dares disturb the sacred archives?" the voice boomed, shaking the very foundations of the ancient structure.

From the shadows emerged a towering figure draped in tattered robes. Its skeletal hands clutched a staff adorned with glowing runes, and its face was an ethereal skull with flickering blue flames in its eye sockets. The air around it crackled with dark energy.

"The Librarian," Viper whispered, her voice laced with awe and dread.

The Librarian raised its staff, and chains of shadow erupted from the ground, snaking toward the team. "Return the tome, or face eternal imprisonment within these halls!"

"Move!" Rook barked.

The team scattered, dodging the shadowy chains that lashed out with deadly precision. Ghost rolled behind a column, firing suppressed rounds that seemed to phase through the spectral entity.

"Bullets aren’t working!" Ghost shouted.

"Then we improvise," Rook said, tossing a smoke grenade. The cloud of smoke obscured their movements, buying them precious seconds to regroup.

"Viper, what’s in that book?" Shadow asked, her voice urgent.

Viper flipped through the tome’s ancient pages, her eyes scanning the glowing runes. "It’s some kind of spellbook… but the language is archaic. I can’t read it fast enough!"

"Figure it out," Rook ordered. "We’ll buy you time."

Bulwark stepped forward, his massive frame shielding the team. He unleashed a barrage of explosives, the concussive force momentarily disrupting the Librarian’s assault.

The skeletal figure recoiled but quickly recovered, its blue flames burning brighter. It slammed its staff into the ground, causing the floor to crack and split. Ghost lost his footing and nearly fell into a widening chasm.

"I’m getting really tired of this place!" he shouted, pulling himself up.

Viper’s eyes lit up as she deciphered a fragment of the tome’s text. "I think I’ve got something! Cover me!"

Shadow and Rook laid down suppressive fire while Viper began chanting the ancient incantation. The Librarian’s fiery eyes narrowed, and it let out an earsplitting roar.

"You cannot wield the knowledge of the ancients!" it bellowed, sending a wave of dark energy toward the team.

The spell completed just as the wave reached them. A brilliant light burst from the tome, engulfing the Librarian. The skeletal figure writhed in agony before shattering into a thousand fragments of light.

The library fell silent once more.

"Is it over?" Ghost asked, his voice wary.

"For now," Viper said, closing the tome. "But this book is far more dangerous than I thought. We need to get it to safety—fast."

The team hurried toward the exit, the library’s shadows watching their every step.
