The team advanced down the narrow corridor, its brick walls illuminated by faint, flickering lights. The air was thick with the scent of damp stone and lingering tension. Each step echoed ominously, bouncing back as if the corridor itself were alive, amplifying their every move.

"Why would anyone build this so deep underground?" Viper muttered, her voice tinged with unease.

"This isn’t just a passage," Ghost responded, his gaze scanning the walls. "It’s a message. Someone wants us here—wants us to feel trapped."

Bulwark grunted, his massive frame brushing against the walls as he trudged forward. "If they wanted us to feel trapped, they’re doing a great job."

"Stay focused," Rook commanded, his tone cutting through the tension like a blade. "Shadow, keep an eye out for any markings. Ghost, check for traps. We can’t afford surprises."

Shadow ran her gloved fingers along the walls, her sharp eyes catching faint scratches etched into the bricks. Symbols—some faded with age, others freshly carved—lined the corridor. "These symbols aren’t random," she said, her voice thoughtful. "They’re guiding us, but I don’t know where."

"Guiding us into what?" Viper asked, gripping her blade tighter.

"Trouble," Bulwark grumbled, his weapon at the ready.

The corridor suddenly widened into a small chamber. The team halted, their breaths shallow as they scanned the space. The walls here were lined with what appeared to be ancient torches, their flames burning a ghostly blue. In the center of the chamber stood a pedestal with an ornate key resting on it, its metallic surface gleaming unnaturally in the light.

"Well, that screams trap," Viper said dryly.

Rook nodded. "Agreed. Ghost, check the perimeter. Shadow, examine the key—don’t touch it."

Ghost moved silently, his trained eyes darting over the chamber’s edges. "No movement," he reported. "But the walls… there’s something off about them. They’re too smooth, almost unnatural."

Shadow crouched near the pedestal, studying the key and the base it rested on. "This isn’t just a key," she murmured. "It’s a mechanism. Pulling it might activate something—or stop something."

"Like what?" Bulwark asked.

Shadow hesitated. "Depends on who built this place. Judging by the symbols, it’s not human-friendly."

Rook weighed their options. "We can’t move forward without it. Shadow, prepare to grab the key. Everyone else, take defensive positions."

The team fanned out, their weapons trained on the chamber’s entrances and walls. Shadow carefully reached out, her fingers brushing the key. As soon as she lifted it, the chamber shook violently, and the blue flames turned a deep, ominous red.

The smooth walls Ghost had noted earlier began to move, revealing hidden panels. From these emerged mechanical constructs, humanoid in shape but clearly not alive. Their glowing red eyes locked onto the team as the clicking of metal echoed through the chamber.

"Here we go again," Rook muttered, raising his weapon. "Take them down!"
