The team stepped into a vast underground chamber, its grandiosity taking them by surprise. Stone arches stretched high above their heads, the golden glow of embedded lights illuminating intricate carvings on the ceiling. The room was eerily silent, save for the faint sound of dripping water echoing through the vaulted halls.

"Looks medieval," Shadow observed, her voice low as her eyes darted across the massive stone pillars.

"Not just medieval," Ghost muttered, scanning the carvings with his visor. "The architecture resembles a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles, but these symbols… they’re ancient. Older than any of those periods."

Rook stepped forward cautiously, his weapon raised. "Stay alert. This place wasn’t meant to be found by accident."

The team spread out, their boots crunching softly on the dusty floor. Viper examined a series of markings etched into one of the pillars. "These symbols… they look like some kind of map."

Bulwark chuckled, his voice breaking the tension. "A map to what? Treasure? Secrets? Or more trouble?"

"Trouble’s a given," Rook said sharply, his eyes narrowing as he caught sight of a spiral staircase partially hidden behind one of the pillars. "Ghost, Shadow—scout ahead. Viper, Bulwark, stay close to me."

As Ghost and Shadow disappeared up the staircase, the remaining team members moved toward the center of the chamber. A large stone altar stood there, surrounded by broken chains and shattered pottery. The air grew colder the closer they got.

"This doesn’t feel right," Viper whispered, her breath visible in the chilling air.

Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the chamber. The team froze, their weapons snapping to the ready. From the shadows behind a collapsed arch, a pair of glowing red eyes emerged.

"Contact!" Rook shouted, firing a warning shot.

The creature lunged into the light, revealing a monstrous, skeletal form cloaked in tattered black robes. Its elongated claws scraped the stone floor as it charged, emitting a guttural roar that sent shivers down their spines.

Bulwark stepped forward, unloading his shotgun into the creature’s chest. The force sent it staggering back, but it quickly recovered, seemingly unfazed.

"Armor-piercing rounds!" Rook commanded. "Aim for the head or the joints!" Enjoy more content from novelbuddy

Viper darted to the side, drawing her combat knives. She leaped onto the creature’s back, plunging a blade into its neck. It screeched, thrashing wildly, and slammed her into a pillar, forcing her to let go.

Above, Ghost and Shadow appeared on the staircase, weapons blazing. A precision shot from Shadow’s sniper rifle shattered one of the creature’s glowing eyes, causing it to stumble.

"Now!" Rook yelled. He charged forward, landing a grenade at the creature’s feet. The explosion echoed through the chamber, leaving the beast in a pile of smoldering bones.

As the dust settled, the team regrouped. "This place is a death trap," Viper said, wincing as she checked her injuries.

"Then we keep moving," Rook said firmly. His gaze shifted to the staircase. "Whatever’s at the top of that spiral, it’s the reason we’re here."

Without another word, the team ascended into the unknown.
