How Could the Villainous Young Master Be a Saintess?-Chapter 98Vol 3. : Thorn in the Heart

Whether it was him or his younger brother Wood, neither of them had the ability to threaten him.

Luther understood. ๐“ฏ๐™ง๐™š๐’†๐™ฌ๐™š๐’ƒ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐’—๐“ฎ๐“ต.๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข

To put it in a very humiliating wayโ€”why would a person care what relationship two toothless pet dogs had with each other?

Whatever their relationship was, could it possibly affect him?

Things that werenโ€™t even in his eyes to begin withโ€”why waste any energy caring about them??

That was why he hadnโ€™t even remembered who Wood was. Because to him, Wood was always just an irrelevant nobody.

โ€œLuther, from your eyes, I can tell you donโ€™t bear me any malice. You came to me purely to make friends, without any strong ulterior motives. Thatโ€™s it, right?โ€ Vinny smiled.

โ€œOf course. I have great admiration for you, Vinny.โ€ Luther smiled naturally, but inside he was sweating.

He didnโ€™t know if Vinny was doing it on purpose, but those words had just cut off what heโ€™d been planning to say next.

From Vinnyโ€™s eyes, Luther could see itโ€”Vinny was doing it on purpose. He had probably already guessed why Luther had come.

โ€œOf course, as a friend, I do have a presumptuous request. I was hoping you could agree, Vinny.โ€

Even so, to complete his task, Luther could only bite the bullet and press on.

โ€œOh? Luther, I just finished saying that the thought of friendship between you and me is very pure, with no ulterior motives.โ€ Vinny took a sip of tea. โ€œSo it turns out thatโ€™s not the case?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I mean, Vinny. Itโ€™s just that there are some things that canโ€™t be changed. My little brother Wood is rough and stupid, but heโ€™s still my blood brother. You should know this alreadyโ€”his student status has been revoked, and heโ€™s been locked up in Carillian Academyโ€™s prison for questioning. After this, heโ€™ll be escorted back to the Kingdom of Camella for further trial.โ€

โ€œOf course, I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything unjust about that. He brought all of it on himself. But, Vinny, losing his student status and whatever subsequent punishmentsโ€”those are all things we feel he deserves. Itโ€™s just... the kid really did get possessed for a moment there. I was wondering if you could... give him a chance?โ€

Luther finally stated the reason heโ€™d come.

โ€œOh, I hadnโ€™t heard. But Luther, I think youโ€™ve come to the wrong person.โ€ Vinny spread his hands. โ€œThis matter should be handled by the Disciplinary Committee and the academy administration. If youโ€™re going to plead with someone, it should be those two sides, right? Coming to me, a Student Council underling with no real authority, is useless.โ€

โ€œNo, no. Youโ€™re the only one whose plea would matter, Vinny.โ€ Luther said. โ€œIn matters like this, if the victim is willing to forgive, itโ€™s a completely different situation.โ€

โ€œOh, so you do know Iโ€™m the victim?โ€ Vinny raised a brow.

โ€œOf course, of course. Weโ€™re not unreasonable people. Naturally, we wouldnโ€™t expect you to forgive him for nothing.โ€

As he spoke, Luther lifted a bulging pouch of gold coins, weighed it, and set it on the table.

โ€œVinny, if youโ€™re willing, this is a small token from my family. I hope you can show mercy and spare that snot-nosed brat this once. Afterwards Iโ€™ll make him kneel and apologize to you. I truly am sorry about all this!โ€

โ€œSo, Luther, what youโ€™re saying is that you want to use this bag of gold to buy someoneโ€™s life?โ€ Vinny tilted his head.

โ€œAh? No, no, thatโ€™s not what I mean at all.โ€ Luther hurriedly shook his head.

โ€œBut that Wood really did almost manage to swap out my token, you know.โ€ Vinny looked at him seriously. โ€œIf I hadnโ€™t been cautious enough, and it had been someone else in my place, then Wood really would have succeeded, wouldnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œIf that happened, Luther, would you still be here, like you are now, asking the victim to spare Wood? Oh, I suppose you wouldnโ€™t be able to ask the victim by then. Youโ€™d only be able to beg the victimโ€™s family.โ€ Vinny added, a touch of mockery in his voice.

โ€œSo, what you mean is...?โ€

โ€œWhat I mean?โ€ Vinny said. โ€œWhat I mean is that itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t want to help you, Lutherโ€”itโ€™s that I canโ€™t. After all, once heโ€™s sent back to the Kingdom of Camella for trial, Iโ€™m not the High Judge presiding, and Iโ€™m not any of the responsible officials either. How about this: you go talk to Mirexia. If Mirexia agrees, then Iโ€™ll agree.โ€

Vinny furrowed his brow in deep thought, looking very much like he was sincerely considering Lutherโ€™s situation.

Luther was briefly at a loss for words. He knew that while those words sounded like they left some room, theyโ€™d basically killed the matter.

Vinny had no intention of accepting the coin pouch either. It was obvious that this little bit of money couldnโ€™t buy him at all.

Which didnโ€™t match the intelligence reports. The report had clearly stated that Vinny was a petty, greedy piece of trash whose eyes lit up at the sight of money. Yet this pouch of goldโ€”enough to make anyoneโ€™s eyes shineโ€”Vinny hadnโ€™t even spared it a glance.

โ€œSigh, Vinny, itโ€™s better to resolve grudges than deepen them. Some matters are very complicatedโ€”far too complicated to be brushed aside with a single impulsive act.โ€ Luther sighed, and after saying that, he added, โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not saying this because Iโ€™m Woodโ€™s older brother. It really is the truth.โ€

โ€œMm, mm. Luther, I understand what youโ€™re saying very well.โ€ Vinny put on a look like he had seriously thought it over.

Seeing Vinny acting like a dead pig unafraid of boiling water, Luther could only feel helpless.

This was the classic โ€œagree to everything and promise nothing.โ€ This kind of attitude was the hardest to handle, the hardest to get any concessions out of.

โ€œSo... thereโ€™s really no room to discuss this, Vinny?โ€ Luther rubbed his forehead.

To be honest, he hadnโ€™t wanted to get involved in this mess at all. Luther was a veteran among veterans; he knew perfectly well just how serious Woodโ€™s crime was. A bit worse, and it could be used as one of Carillian Academyโ€™s official negative-case warning posters.

Because of that, even with the tie of kinship, he didnโ€™t dare casually violate the rules.

Besides, he couldnโ€™t afford that much money on his own.

Heโ€™d been unwilling to do this even before he met Vinny. After meeting Vinny, he was even less willing.

Wood was basically completely finished. Luther had zero desire to go and offend Vinny further for his sake.

But he had no choice.

Because the Siris family had to serve as vassals to larger noble houses.

That little brat Wood knew some very serious thingsโ€”things that absolutely could not be allowed to leak in interrogation.

To put it in a rather cruel, un-family-like way: it was better for only Wood to be gone than for the entire Siris family, and the house standing behind the Siris family, to go down with him.

โ€œI never said thereโ€™s no room to discuss it. I told you already, didnโ€™t I?โ€ Vinny said. โ€œGo talk to Her Highness Mirexia. If she agrees, then Iโ€™ll be able to step in at the right time. Otherwise, wouldnโ€™t I be overstepping? Luther, as my friend, you wouldnโ€™t want to see me caught in the middle, would you?โ€

Those words were a refusalโ€”an extremely sharp and forceful refusal.

Ask him to go talk to Princess Mirexia about this? Was that supposed to be a joke??

A student from the Kingdom of Camella had committed a crime in the academyโ€”attempted murder, no lessโ€”and the target was a fellow noble from the same kingdom. That was already an enormous scandal in terms of public opinion.

And on top of that, he was supposed to let Princess Mirexia, who was upright to a fault, hear about it?

Plead for leniency? Not only was there zero chance of that being granted, the person who made the suggestion might find themselves investigated as well. Who would dare touch that? That would be suicide.

That was precisely why theyโ€™d called in Luther to plead.

If anyone else pled, it would be suspicious as collusion; only a family member pleading for mercy could be considered natural and reasonable. As Woodโ€™s blood brother, Luther had a legitimate motive to beg for his useless little brother.

โ€œSigh.โ€ Luther sighed again, stood up, and put his coin pouch away.

โ€œSorry to have bothered you today, Vinny.โ€

โ€œAs for everything I said today, just pretend you never heard it.โ€

With that, Luther rose, bowed to Vinny, and left.

Vinny watched Lutherโ€™s back with a bit of surprise. Heโ€™d been wondering if Luther would cling on and badger him if he didnโ€™t agree today, but he hadnโ€™t expected him to give up so easily.

You could say he was fairly sensible.

Vinny drained his coffee in one go and left as well.

After leaving the cafรฉ, Luther walked straight toward the Carillian Academy dormitory sector. He headed for the second-year area and stopped in front of a villa dorm ranked in the top five. Quietly, he pressed the doorbell.

โ€œWho is it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me. Luther,โ€ Luther answered.

A moment later, the door opened.

Luther glanced around carefully before slipping inside. Only after he shut the door with utmost care and confirmed no one had seen him did he follow the open door deeper into the house.

โ€œDid you succeed?โ€ the person in the room asked.

Luther said nothing. After a moment, he sighed, took the coin pouch out of his pocket, and set it on the table.

โ€œFailed?โ€

After a while, the man on the sofa spoke, brow furrowing.

โ€œYes. He wouldnโ€™t take it.โ€

The rest didnโ€™t need saying. If he hadnโ€™t even taken the money, how could he possibly have agreed?

โ€œHe actually refused... that money-grubbing scoundrel.โ€

After a brief silence, the man on the sofa spoke again.

โ€œDid you try every method?โ€

โ€œYes. I tried everything. He even told me to go discuss the matter with Her Highness Mirexia.โ€ Luther paused for a moment, then added.

โ€œWhat a stubborn bastardโ€”wonโ€™t take oil or salt.โ€ The man on the sofa said coldly. โ€œHeโ€™s really gotten arrogant.โ€

โ€œAll right, I get it. You can go back.โ€ The man on the sofa waved a hand.

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

Luther sighed, stood up, and headed for the door. When he reached it, though, he stopped, turned back, and hesitated.

โ€œWhat, youโ€™ve still got something to say?โ€ Seeing that Luther hadnโ€™t left directly, the man on the sofa asked.

โ€œYoung Master, I donโ€™t know if I should say this or not.โ€ Luther said, standing there.

โ€œWhat is it? Say it. Itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œYoung Master... I think, if possible, we really shouldnโ€™t provoke Vinny any further.โ€ Luther said, his expression complicated.

โ€œI thought you were going to say something important. Thatโ€™s all?โ€

The man on the sofa fell silent for a moment.

โ€œWhy are you suddenly saying this? Did something happen?โ€

โ€œYoung Master, to be honest, after testing Vinny this time, I donโ€™t think heโ€™s anywhere near as bad as the rumors make him out to be,โ€ Luther said after a brief pause. In the end, he still said it, even though he knew that the moment the words left his mouth, his Young Master would definitely be very [N O V E L I G H T] unhappy.

โ€œWhatโ€™s this now? Donโ€™t tell me you got scared by that thugโ€™s presence.โ€ The man on the sofa frowned.

โ€œThatโ€™s not it. Itโ€™s just... Young Master, from my observation, I think this Vinny is anything but simple. He already has the mindset and potential a true powerhouse should have. Given time, he might really become something extraordinary. I feel those rumors out there might not be all that accurate. At least to me, his advance to the Magus realm doesnโ€™t seem likeโ€”โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€

Before Luther could finish, the man on the sofa cut him off.

โ€œWhy are you here singing that punkโ€™s praises over and over? How long have you even known him? How long have you spent around him? Youโ€™re acting like you understand him better than I do!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough. Youโ€™ve really lost your head today. Go back and get some rest. Thereโ€™s nothing here that needs you.โ€

Once the silence settled, the man on the sofa said coldly.

โ€œ...Understood.โ€

Luther knew his Young Master was angry and wouldnโ€™t listen to a word, so he could only give up, helplessly leaving the room.

Accompanied by the crisp sound of the door closing, the spacious villa returned to silence.

The man on the sofa sat in silence for a long time.

From the inner room came a soft click of a door opening, and then a man walked out.

โ€œSee? Just like I saidโ€”heโ€™ll always be a nail in your heart.โ€

โ€œOur interests are aligned, arenโ€™t they?โ€ The man smiled. โ€œAs allies, shouldnโ€™t we work together nicely?โ€

โ€œAligned interests? Allies? You mean allies who threaten me and force me to cooperate with him?โ€ the man on the sofa said after a brief pause.

โ€œHaha, youโ€™re still hung up on that. It was just a means to an end. Donโ€™t you want to pull~ out that sharp thorn in your heart?โ€

โ€œThink carefullyโ€”how many good things has he ruined for you?โ€

โ€œThere was no need for you people to come in, and even less need for you to put a sword to my head,โ€ the man on the sofa snorted coldly. โ€œStill, I really didnโ€™t expect you to be this kind of person.โ€

โ€œRight back at you, Young Master. Youโ€™re not as polished and glorious as you look on the surface either, are you? Weโ€™re all hypocrites here. Shouldnโ€™t that make us on the same side?โ€

The manโ€™s expression didnโ€™t change as he smiled. โ€œBesides, I happen to know quite a few things about you, Young Master.โ€

โ€œSo this is all your own idea?โ€

โ€œYoung Master, whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œWhat do you think? Donโ€™t play dumb. You know exactly what I mean,โ€ the man on the sofa said coldly.

โ€œOf course itโ€™s my own idea. Besides, you donโ€™t need to understand so much. All you need to know is that our goals are aligned for now. Thatโ€™s enough.โ€ The man spread his hands.

โ€œHeh. Even if I work with you, thereโ€™s no opportunity right now anyway, is there?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s nothing you need to worry about. Thereโ€™ll be an opportunity very soon. On that point, rest assured. Donโ€™t rush.โ€
