"Ok, everything is ready," I said as soon as we finished our preparations for the fight. "So let’s get this over with."

"Be careful, Rick," Alicia said to me. I patted her hair, touching the silky strands. It would be her first time fighting, but she was more worried about my safety. ’So I should bring her a win.’

"I’m always careful. I’ll be counting on you too, Alicia. You’re a crucial part of our plan, so I’ll be depending on you during and after this battle." I said this, putting my trust in my Saintess Valkyrie. Her expression became as serious as she could, nodding to me.

Erina and Justine nodded to me too. Their faces carried a more relaxed expression. Maybe they were starting to believe we could win.

’If I’m not wrong, the Sheep that I fought was a D-Rank, so I’m fighting an even stronger beast now. And I have to face it as a frontliner. What a pain.’ I thought inwardly.

I would like to get as strong as I could before I needed to fight a monster like that, or even stronger. But life doesn’t work that way, and sometimes you have to face things that you’re just not prepared for.

I sighed deeply and stepped towards my opponent. Its ears stood up when I came closer, those ferocious eyes staring at me, remembering what I did to its muzzle.

I was right in front of that big predator with my sword in hand. The beast raised its body, getting prepared to fight me. Maybe it was the heat of the moment, but my sword, that I took from a dead bandit, looked like a toothpick next to the Wolf Lord’s fangs.

"Now, Alicia!" I shouted, signaling to my Valkyrie.

The Saintess responded with her power. As the Wolf was coming to attack me, a ray of light shone close to it, stunning it once again.

A level 2 character against a level 20 character might look like a lost battle. However, level here looked more like a milestone for upgrading status. So in the end, the more important thing was how big the difference between our stats was.

The monster was now frozen in time, an easy target for our physical attacks. But I still needed more Strength Points to cause more damage to it.

I hated what I was going to do. My body remembered that bad sensation, but I had no choice. To make the plan work, I needed to get stronger, and there was only one skill that could make that happen.

As I called my skill, I could feel my body lighter and stronger than before because of the change in my status numbers. But...

I was surprised. It was the first time that Brandish talked to me like that.

I couldn’t see her face or even hear her voice, but I could feel that she was really worried about me. She helped me a lot, teaching me about the Valkyrie System, and I liked interacting with her, but I didn’t expect such an emotional reaction.

I smiled, thinking that she was worried for my sake. ’Sure. I’ll survive this battle, otherwise you would lose your job, right?’

I swung my sword against that creature without any mercy. It couldn’t avoid my attacks thanks to the Holy Light, so I couldn’t hold back. I had to attack as much as I could until the status effect faded away.

I could use Ero Boost three more times, but if I did, I wouldn’t be capable of using my other Swordmaster or even a Saintess skill as well.

As my sword slashed through the monster’s skin, its fur became stained with the red of its blood where I cut it.

After I attacked the creature for a while, the Holy Light faded, releasing the Wolf Lord from its restriction. It tried to slash me back, its claws aiming horizontally for my stomach.

My defenses were stronger, but I couldn’t be reckless. The creature was still powerful, and I had few life points compared to it, so avoiding the attacks was as important as attacking. For that reason, I had already stepped backwards when its stun was over. Thanks to my previous move, my torso remained unharmed.

Right after the last attack failed, the beast tried to attack me with its other paw. A quick move came from above and could hit me easily. I had more agility points, but no time to evade it. Thankfully, I had backup.

The sound of a gunshot echoed through the forest. The bullet made a hard sound when it hit the creature’s withers. Erina was meters and meters away from our fight. She was a Gunner and, for her style of combat, staying distant was the best way for her to fight.

A ray of light sent by Alicia again stopped the Wolf Lord from moving, followed by another attack from Erina. Justine’s magic focused on reducing the monster’s movements using her earth magic, its feet sinking into the mud.

We needed to do that again and again to cause substantial damage. I attacked the monster with more energy than before because we didn’t have much time. When Alicia’s potions ended, our chances would be reduced drastically.

"Flash Thrasher!" I used my Swordmaster skill once again. As I dashed past the Wolf, my sword slashed its body as much as it could. That beautiful fur was covered in open wounds now, bullet holes around it where Erina shot. But the beast was still standing. I had a bad feeling about it. This scene sent chills down my spine.

I looked at its Health Points, hoping that it was closer to zero after all our attacks. And I was happy to do that.

"Good! If we continue like that—" My voice stopped. Victory was close. Very close. But still too far from our reach.

When the Holy Light vanished, the beast didn’t try to attack me. That bad feeling I had grew stronger when the Wolf started to howl.

An aura violently emanated from the Wolf Lord, blasting away the dust around the Fenrir’s Descendant.

’Why does every monster I fight have a power-up?’ I thought inwardly.

Like a boss entering its second phase, the Wolf Lord looked at me differently. And I could tell that it wouldn’t be as easy as we had planned.
