How I Tamed My Wolfish Husband Back in 80s-Chapter 300 - 302: Asking for It - 1
Chapter 300: Chapter 302: Asking for It - 1
The next day, Li Qiao brought fruit to the Qin family residence, where Old Mr. Qin was wearing reading glasses, leaning on a chair as he read the newspaper.
"Sir Xue," Li Qiao called out.
Old Mr. Xue pushed his glasses up and waved at her with a smile. "Next time don’t bring anything, it makes things feel formal."
Li Qiao said, "I just took these fruits out of the well water, and Grandma insisted that I bring them. She said you like to eat something cool in the summer."
Jiang Wanqiu smiled without humor: "After so many years, your grandma still remembers Sir Xue’s preferences, that’s really something."
Old Mr. Xue glanced at Jiang Wanqiu, "Are my preferences a secret? Xiangjun had a good memory even when she was young. I grew up with her since we were little, and she was one of my few playmates. Knowing my preferences isn’t anything special." He changed the subject, "Qiaoqiao, sit down. There are grapes soaking in the kitchen, I’ll go get some for you to eat."
Li Qiao replied, "No need, I’ll just sit for a bit and then leave." She exchanged a few more pleasantries to explain the purpose of her visit.
Jiang Wanqiu interrupted, "You bought your own place, and you want Qin Jin to move his residency there? Are you silly?"
"That’s enough." After Old Mr. Xue glared at Jiang Wanqiu, he turned to Li Qiao, his impatient attitude softening, "Allow me to make some inquiries."
Nowadays phones have loud speaker functions.
After one phone call, Li Qiao knew the procedure.
She would need to take the land use certificate for the Beijing property back to her hometown’s production brigade to get a proof of residency cancellation, then bring the household registration book to the police station for a cancellation stamp, followed by obtaining an acceptance proof from the local office here, and then she could proceed with the residency registration.
Old Mr. Xue repeated the contents of the phone call.
Li Qiao indicated she had taken note, and casually praised, "Sir Xue, your memory is still quite good."
"I often exercise my brain with the newspaper."
"Stop pretending, how many characters do you even know?" Jiang Wanqiu sang a different tune from the side.
"Haven’t you seen the dictionary placed next to me? If I don’t recognize a character, I can look it up!"
The old couple began to argue and Li Qiao wanted to leave but couldn’t find an opening to say goodbye. Leaving directly without a word wouldn’t be polite, so she sat quietly, planning to wait for them to finish arguing. Who could have expected that they would actually start fighting? She certainly couldn’t just stand by and watch, so she stepped forward to intervene and was struck squarely on the forehead by the handle of Jiang Wanqiu’s broom, causing her to scream out.
Jiang Wanqiu was startled and froze with her hand in mid-air. Although she disliked Li Qiao, she hadn’t intended to hit her. Regaining her composure, she said with irritation, "Whose fault is it that you got in the way?"
Old Mr. Xue cursed, "You reckless old woman, you hurt someone because you can’t control your own strength and still blame others."
"Isn’t it all because of you?"
Li Qiao had tears streaming down her face from the pain, and her head throbbed not only from the blow but also from their constant bickering, "I’ll be going now."
Old Mr. Xue stopped her and called upstairs, "Lingqing... Lingqing... Sufen... Sufen... Lingqing..."
"Why are you calling me?" Xue Lingqing entered from outside, with a scarf wrapped around her neck which she lifted to wipe away sweat.
"Qiaoqiao’s head got hit by your mom, you should take her to the hospital to get it checked out."
"It’s nothing," Li Qiao insisted through the pain.
Xue Lingqing stepped forward. Her hand was white and delicate as she covered her forehead, not letting anyone see.
Tears adorned her face, rendering her pitifully charming.
A beautiful person is beautiful even when they cry.
Unlike Xue Sufen, who can’t even look good when she smiles.
"Let go of your hand and let me see if it’s broken," Xue Lingqing said.
"It’s not broken," Li Qiao claimed.
Xue Lingqing insisted, "Let me have a look."
Li Qiao lowered her hand revealing a bump on her forehead that was red and swollen. "Are you feeling dizzy?" Xue Lingqing asked.
"A little, but it’s not serious, just painful."
Xue Lingqing suggested, "I’m going out to buy some popsicles. We can put them in a bag and use it as an ice pack to help reduce the swelling, then you can go home once it’s better."
"Okay," Li Qiao agreed, not wishing to go home with such a noticeable swelling and worry her grandma.
As Xue Lingqing turned to leave, her eyes swept over Jiang Wanqiu, "Mom, why are you standing there stunned after hitting someone? Why don’t you prepare some treats?"
"Ah," Jiang Wanqiu, setting aside grievances, immediately got busy preparing food and drink, even turning on the TV.
Li Qiao accepted the offering and sat in the chair, eating grapes and watching TV.
Yawning, Xue Sufen emerged from the bedroom, and Old Mr. Xue remarked, "You’re home, huh?"
"Where else would I be if not at home?"
Old Mr. Xue was frustrated; he had called out so many times without a response. Was she deaf?
Xue Sufen complained, "Why is it okay for Li Qiao to eat grapes and watch TV, but not for me? You’re so biased, I really doubt I’m your own granddaughter."
"I can be certain your father is my own, but you, I really can’t say for sure."
Irritated, Xue Sufen stamped her foot, "Grandma, look at him."
Jiang Wanqiu picked at the corner of her mouth, "You’re the elder, don’t be mad at him."
Xue Sufen was shocked: "...."
She paused before saying, "Li Qiao, you have enough money to buy a house, why don’t you buy a TV?" To think she’d run to her place to hog her television and fruit.
Li Qiao: "I don’t want to watch at all." She had hardly ever watched TV while growing up.
She had absolutely no interest in it; after all, there were so many entertainment activities to choose from, who would remember TV?
It was only somewhat rare these days, but not worth the expense of buying a TV just to watch a few episodes.
The Xue family’s TV probably wasn’t purchased but given to Sir Xue by higher-ups.
Xue Sufen sneered, "You may not watch, but your eyes are glued to it."
"It was turned on by Madam Xue."
Jiang Wanqiu: "...."
Xue Sufen: "...."
Xue Lingqing returned with popsicles, wrapping them in a towel inside a bag.
"Uncle, what are you doing? If you’re not eating the popsicles, give them to me."
"Can’t you buy them if you want to eat?" Xue Lingqing handed his makeshift ice pack to Li Qiao.
Only then did Xue Sufen pay attention to Li Qiao’s forehead, "What happened to you?"
"Madam Xue hit me."
Jiang Wanqiu sighed, "It’s not like I did it on purpose. Next time, stay away when you see me with things."
Li Qiao felt helpless; was she wrong even when trying to break up a fight?
Alright then.
It was really her own fault.
She pressed the towel to her forehead with both hands and tilted her head back to ice it, the beautiful line of her neck reminiscent of a swan.
Xue Lingqing couldn’t take his eyes off her, struggling to look away.
By the time the popsicle in Li Qiao’s hand had melted, the swelling on her forehead had gone down a lot, and with her hair covering it, it wasn’t noticeable unless looked at closely.
Jiang Wanqiu held up a mirror, "It’s much better now."
Li Qiao planned to leave, but when she stood up, dizziness and nausea overtook her, and she retched a few times by the door, her face instantly turning pale.
"What’s wrong with you?" Jiang Wanqiu’s heart clenched, fearful that she was pregnant and had been hit, causing complications.
Old Mr. Xue started calling for Xue Lingqing again.
When Xue Lingqing appeared, Old Mr. Xue said, "Qiaoqiao is not feeling well; take her to the hospital for a checkup."
"Li Qiao, where do you feel uncomfortable?"
"My head, I suspect I’ve got a concussion," said Li Qiao.
"Don’t scare me, just a light tap and a concussion?" Jiang Wanqiu didn’t understand what a concussion was, but anything to do with the brain was frightening.
The Xue elders all turned to look at Jiang Wanqiu.
Xue Sufen said, "Get her to the hospital quickly to have a look, don’t let anything happen." Otherwise, it would end up being Madam Xue’s fault.
Xue Lingqing didn’t dare delay.
Li Qiao also thought it best to be checked. At the hospital entrance, she leaned against a tree trunk and vomited, wearing her sporty outfit with a handkerchief in her trouser pocket which she took out to wipe her mouth.
A small water bottle appeared in front of her.
"Have a drink."
Li Qiao rinsed her mouth and took a couple of sips of water, which made her feel much better.
After the examination at the hospital, she was diagnosed with a mild concussion and needed to be put on a drip.
Xue Lingqing accompanied her and waited for Jiang Wanqiu to apologize.
Li Qiao felt too ill to talk; if there were any more fights in the future, she decided she wasn’t stepping forward.
"Li Qiao...."
"Professor Xue, my head hurts, don’t talk anymore, wu wu...."
Xue Lingqing became anxious, "....okay, okay, I won’t talk, just don’t cry."
Li Qiao leaned her head against the chair back while on the IV, and only after two bags of fluids did the sense of discomfort fade.
The doctor then gave her medicine for three days, advising her to take it on time.
