Hunter of Mysterious Creature-Chapter 522 - 108: The Videotape
Sun Hang quickly reached the end of the underground mall. Ahead was another elevator leading to the surface, along with the entrance and exit to the underground parking lot.
Sun Hang glanced at the underground parking lot, and to his surprise, saw many cars covered in dust—cars that were not abandoned by their owners, he deduced, but simply had nowhere else to park. Chengdu’s private car numbers had long exceeded the city’s total parking capacity. On a typical day, the non-motor vehicle lanes alongside roads would often be filled with parked cars.
Several luxury cars had their windows shattered, while cars valued around one hundred thousand remained untouched. Shards of broken car window glass were strewn all over the parking lot.
"No... Is there anything or not..." Sun Hang muttered to himself.
"No what?" the scavenger following behind asked puzzledly, "Do you mean...that person?"
"I can’t smell the scent of the mysterious presence... Whether in the underground mall or in the parking lot... It’s too clean here... It shouldn’t be..." Sun Hang murmured.
"The scent of the mysterious presence? Does it have a smell?" the scavenger asked, both afraid and curious, "Is it a rotten smell? Or a bloody smell?"
"Strictly speaking, it’s not a smell detectable by the nose, but rather a presence only the infected can sense," Sun Hang explained. "Any mysterious presence will emit this kind of aura, even if its disguise is perfect. As long as you’re close enough, some aura will escape... It’s almost unavoidable."
"So with no aura in the air...there’s no mysterious presence underground here?" the scavenger asked tentatively.
"I can only confirm there’s a mysterious presence lurking in the shopping center, but exactly where I’m not sure," Sun Hang shook his head. "If when we entered, we encountered the scavenger claiming this place, I might have thought the mysterious presence was hiding elsewhere... But now, don’t you think we’ve encountered a bit too many odd things?"
As Sun Hang said this, his gaze fell on the fire axe in the other’s hand.
"Well... well... is there any type of... you know... mysterious presence without any aura?" the scavenger asked again.
"Yes," Sun Hang nodded, "But my intuition tells me, this is not one of those."
"Intuition?" the scavenger was taken aback, "You... you still trust intuition?"
"Why not trust it? Intuition is quite useful," Sun Hang couldn’t possibly tell her he had just used his wishful thinking ability again, burned out a good portion of his blue energy, yet gained nothing.
"By the way, there are two levels underground in the mall, there’s another level below..." The scavenger just said it and felt a bit regretful. She suddenly realized that if she didn’t tell this Hunter there were more levels, maybe he would have chosen to give up?
How would he handle her afterward? Would he turn her over to the Public Security Bureau or the Investigation Bureau?
But thinking it over, that kind of ending seems better than facing the mysterious presence head-on... At least, they’d operate under rules... Even if she committed a crime, it wouldn’t be punishable by death, right...
As long as that arrow shot toward the Hunter wasn’t counted...
"I know, I’m just looking for the passage down," Sun Hang stood at the parking lot entrance, looking up at the schematic of the underground mall hanging on the wall.
The scavenger sighed with resignation.
There are two entrances to the second underground level, one right beside the elevator. But on this schematic, a conspicuous red inscription marked "No Entry."
"The second underground level is the equipment room and substation, nothing of value down there..." the scavenger whispered, "In the past, dismantling those machines for parts could fetch quite a sum as scrap iron... But now these things aren’t bought, they only buy things that are small, light, and valuable... Like watches and jewelry, best sellers."
"You’ve been there?" Sun Hang glanced back at her.
"No... I just heard about it from other scavengers," the scavenger said. "Among us, there’s someone who used to be a security guard at this shopping center, he’s very familiar with the layout. He told us about it."
"Oh? As a scavenger, did he ever come back to the underground?"
"I don’t know... But he later disappeared too, no one knows where he went," the scavenger said. "Some say, he was killed by the monster in the underground mall..."
"Tsk... Interesting." Sun Hang walked to the entrance and with a light swipe of his metal blade, cut through the thumb-thick iron lock wrapped around the door handle.
With a thud of heavy metal hitting the ground, Sun Hang kicked open the door, and a gust of choking dust-laden airflow rushed at them.
Sun Hang shone his flashlight inside. Behind the door was a staircase leading downwards, and in the spaces on either side of the stairway, a number of promotional materials from the mall were piled up. A giant roulette wheel lay toppled on the stairs, blocking much of the passage.
"Let’s go."
Sun Hang kicked the roulette wheel into the gap between the stairs and the wall—it was big, but made of plastic foam, so nearly weightless.
Sun Hang thought for a moment and tossed the flashlight to the scavenger.
After inheriting part of the Black Dragon meme from Wang Xiyi, Sun Hang gained the ability for dark vision. Even without a flashlight, he could see the surroundings clearly.
