Hunter of Mysterious Creature-Chapter 536 - 117: Ark of the Covenant
Maxim’s mind instantly cursed "Suka" madly, and he pressed down on the communication button on his headset... However, the vanished window not only blocked his exit from the building but also cut off all contact with the outside. Just a few seconds ago, the team’s communication channel, which was clear, now only had the hissing sound of static.
"A freak, huh! Damn it, I don’t care what kind of freak you are, just go to hell, all of you!!"
In despair, a surge of ruthlessness suddenly rose in Maxim’s heart. He twisted his body in an instant, grabbed hold of a supporting structure beside him with one hand, and with the other hand, raised his submachine gun high, aiming toward the direction where the sound came from.
Under the beam of the tactical flashlight, a creature that seemed humanoid but moved on all fours could be seen quickly crawling along the support structures inside the building.
Its movements were extremely agile, jumping back and forth among the complex support structures. Maxim’s light couldn’t completely lock onto it—every time the creature’s form just became engulfed in light, it would leap swiftly, slipping again into the shadows outside the beam.
The creature’s speed was incredible, and its evasive maneuvers were entirely erratic... But at this moment, Maxim’s inner fear was gradually dissipating—his lips curled into a sinister smile, and he cursed loudly in Russian: "Bastard! Since you’re always hiding, it means you’re afraid of bullets, right! Then just wait there and die, damn it!!"
Maxim switched to holding the submachine gun with both hands, the muzzle tightly tracking the rapidly moving creature—the creature was less than twenty meters away from him, and at this distance, even for a fast-moving target, he was confident he could hit it!
He didn’t need precise aiming; as long as he could sweep the creature, the specially crafted nine-millimeter caliber submachine gun rounds could tear through its body!
Once this happened, the creature’s speed would decrease... and as soon as it slowed down, Maxim would mercilessly riddle it with bullets!
The creature wasn’t an enemy soldier; there was no need for negotiation, no need for capturing it. As a soldier, Maxim’s task was to kill as efficiently as possible!
The trigger was pulled, the muzzle spat fire, and the crisp sound of the PPK20 submachine gun echoed throughout the building. Numerous support structures were severed and shattered, and concrete debris fell like rain from above.
Maxim clearly heard the sound of bullets penetrating flesh, and a moment of joy filled his heart: Got it!
However, the creature’s speed hadn’t noticeably slowed. As it dodged the bullets in a zigzag, the distance between it and Maxim was rapidly closing!
"Just a few more hits, and I don’t believe you can still leap up!"
With a "click," the PPK submachine gun entered an empty magazine hold-back state. Maxim skillfully pressed the magazine release catch, swung the gun to the side, and flung out the spent magazine. The next second, his left hand reflexively reached for his waist.
Maxim’s motion froze.
He suddenly remembered that to climb the window, he had removed all excess gear, including that cumbersome armored vest with spare magazines!
Maxim’s heart felt like it had fallen into an ice cellar.
Not only were his submachine gun’s spare magazines gone, but his secondary weapon, a handgun, was also attached to the vest.
The thirty bullets he just fired were all the ammunition he had on him.
"It’s over."
The creature was now less than five meters away from Maxim, seemingly able to pounce directly onto him with just a light jump!
The situation didn’t allow Maxim to think further. He dropped the submachine gun, released the safety buckle at his waist, grabbed the drone wreckage at his feet, and jumped directly from the platform’s edge!
Maxim felt like he broke several thinner support structures; there was one arm-thick support he couldn’t break through, which clubbed his unprotected right rib heavily... The excruciating pain as if a bone was broken was secondary. What was fatal was that the impact threw Maxim’s body off balance, preventing him from landing on his feet as he anticipated. Instead, he crashed heavily sideways onto the ground floor of the building!
The distance from the platform to the ground floor was far deeper than Maxim initially judged! The complex array of support structures created a visual deception. In reality, the floor of the building’s interior was at least five or six meters below the platform, meaning there was another "subterranean structure" layer below ground.
Perhaps the word "subterranean" isn’t accurate... After all, these buildings emerged from the ground like plants, with part of them remaining below the surface, which is entirely normal...
Maxim felt his right leg seemed to have stepped into a thorn bush. Those sharp spikes couldn’t cut through the tough military boots but easily pierced his pants. His right leg seemed impaled, as a thumb-sized support structure penetrated from one side of his calf to the other.
But under the surge of adrenaline, the pain from the wound was completely suppressed. Maxim didn’t have the time to examine his injury; he didn’t even have time to get up from the ground—he reached towards his boot and drew a sharp knife from it.
