Chapter 52: 52, Capital Daily Sold Out!_1
Ren He tucked his phone back into his pocket with a smile curling his lips. To be honest, he was quite surprised that Zhou Wumeng was so engrossed in his writing, but knowing that even Elder Zhou, a titan of the literary world, was mesmerized gave him even more confidence in Kunlun.
Since Zhou Wumeng had so graciously urged him to write more, Ren He’s main task now was to add more content to Kunlun. After all, Kunlun wasn’t all that different from serialized online novels, and the Divine Punishment System only issued missions after payment was received.
But before he had written much that morning, Zhou Wumeng called again, “How much have you written?”
“Five thousand words…” Ren He hesitated before answering.
“That’ll do; send it to me for a review,” Zhou Wumeng said assertively.
Ren He thought, Just say you want to read it… But he sent it anyhow… Zhou Wumeng didn’t forget to mention as he hung up, “Hurry up with the rest, and don’t worry. Once your draft is out, leave the copyright operations to Capital Journalism. You won’t be shortchanged.”
Leaning back against the couch, Zhou Wumeng fell into deep thought. For some reason, he suddenly felt an urge. Who didn’t dream of blood-stirring martial arts adventures in their youth? He certainly did, even investing much passion into them once. However, domestic martial arts narratives that could carry the banner had been absent for too long, and his interest had cooled.
It had been over twenty years since then, hadn’t it? Back then, he was a poor scholar, a junior editor, but now he was the chief editor of Capital Journalism!
Zhou Wumeng stepped out of his office and announced to everyone, “Adjust tomorrow’s layout a bit; change the format of the daily’s entertainment section. I’ve got a draft that needs to go in.”
Everyone was stunned. What kind of draft was so important? A young man stood up timidly and said, “Elder Zhou… Tomorrow there’s a piece on Jiang Siyao’s new album release. Many people are looking forward to it…”
“It’s fine; it’s just an album release. Do as I said,” Zhou Wumeng replied before returning to his office to send the draft to his subordinates.
A group of people crowded around a middle-aged editor: “Take a look, what kind of draft has Elder Zhou changing the layout for?”
When the middle-aged editor opened the email, he was taken aback: “Holy shit!”
“No way!”
“A martial arts novel!”
“Seriously? Elder Zhou wants to change the entertainment page to serialize a martial arts novel? Isn’t that too much?”
The middle-aged editor stood and shooed people away: “Go on, get back to work. What kind of look is this?”
He sat down and began the review. To be fair, he too wanted to know what kind of martial arts novel had compelled Zhou Wumeng to make such a momentous decision. This was Capital Daily, which had never serialized a novel before!
But apparently, decades ago, one of the most important sections in newspapers was serialized novels, which could boost sales if they were even slightly intriguing.
But what time were they living in now? And Capital Daily wasn’t just a local paper, it was iconic…
However, as the middle-aged editor began reviewing the draft, he was instantly hooked. This was nothing like previous martial arts novels, and the plot was cleverly driven; the story was epic and truly captured the essence of a hero’s grandeur!
At 10 o’clock that night, the middle-aged editor stretched his arms, and a young editor on duty asked weakly, “Why are you leaving so late today?”
“Oh, I got engrossed in a novel…” the middle-aged editor blurted out before catching himself; he had misspoken. He quickly coughed twice: “I was reviewing a draft… Alright, hurry up and send the materials to distribution.”
He wondered if Elder Zhou had the rest of the story as he put on his coat…
Ren He still had no idea that his story, originally intended for Modern and Ancient Martial Heroes, had been published in Capital Daily by Zhou Wumeng, and by tomorrow, countless people would not only read Kunlun, the martial arts novel, but it would also cause a sensation!
In the morning, a multitude of newspapers were shipped out from the printing plant. When they reached the various sale points, the distributors picked them up and were perplexed: What happened to the entertainment section?
Where there should have been entertainment news, the page now displayed two big characters “Kunlun”!
What was this? A martial arts novel? Since when did Capital Daily start serializing martial arts stories? Wouldn’t it mean there was no entertainment news to publish?
But slowly, they all were captivated. This martial arts novel was so different from the others… It was too good!
By then, someone entered the bookstore asking for a newspaper: “Boss, give me a copy of Capital Daily!”
“Buy it quick, young man. You might want to grab a couple more for friends. Capital Daily revamped today, swapped the entertainment section for a martial arts story – criminally good. I bet it sells out today!” the excited shop owner said.
“What novel is so good?” the young buyer asked, picking up a copy and flipping to where the owner had praised the novel, and once he started reading, he didn’t move for quite some time.
“Hey, hey, are you buying?” the owner queried.
“Ah?” The young man snapped out of it: “Yeah, I’ll take five!” as he pulled out ten yuan and handed it to the owner.
“Today’s Capital Daily got a price increase,” the smiling owner said: “Three yuan each.”
“Since when? Doesn’t the cover still say two yuan?”
“Stop looking. I raised it,” the owner chuckled: “Are you buying or not? If not, others will.”
“Alright, alright, three yuan it is. Highway robbery, this is! You’re too sly, boss!” the young man grumbled as he forked over another five yuan.
That day, Capital Daily sold out for the third time in its history.
And unlike before, this time Capital Daily was reprinted several times and still couldn’t satisfy everyone’s enthusiasm! Many who’d heard about the excellent martial arts novel in today’s Capital Daily ran to countless bookstores and newsstands, only to find them all sold out.
They had no choice but to borrow from friends.
Sitting on the couch in Zhou Wumeng’s office, the middle-aged editor spoke with emotion: “Elder Zhou, you’re amazing. When did we ever dare to dream that Capital Daily could sell this much – tripled the sales!”
Zhou Wumeng chuckled: “To be honest, I too am a bit surprised. Truly, our culture has been too scarce. There’s too little for people to enjoy in their leisure time. Thankfully, I didn’t release it in Modern and Ancient Martial Heroes!”
“Elder Zhou, who’s the author? We should pay him, right? And… Do you have the rest of the story? Let me have a look,” joked the middle-aged editor.

Zhou Wumeng looked melancholy: “I don’t either. That kid Ren He writes too slowly!”
In truth, the writing wasn’t slow, but in the readers’ hearts, the author’s updates are always too few. Their deepest desire was to devour the entire novel in one go – that’s what really satisfies!
The middle-aged editor was stunned: “Ren He? The one who wrote the Three Character Classic? That high school student?”
“Yes, that’s him.”
