Chapter 231: Speculations Part 1

The analysis meeting took off immediately as Arlen summarized the case starting from when they found Emily Wilson four days ago.

He wrote down the events in chronological order on the smaller whiteboard, "Excluding the oldest victim, Mary Taylor who we would get back to later. The remaining twenty victims were escorts who mostly worked in nightclubs. Evenly distributed among three clubs, here, here, and here." There was a projection of a large map of Davenport in front of Arlen.

He circled the clubs with a red marker.

"We have tried to get as much of the clientele as we can. But there are a few overlaps of clients. Those who visit all three clubs have been interviewed by us and they all had alibis on that morning that Emily Wilson’s body was dumped." To be more specific, the four of them were all married and were with their families, they were all eager to cooperate as long as Ravi and Lisa did not tell their families about their extra-curricular activities.

"Scums." Lisa cursed outside the interrogation room.

After speaking, Ravi turned to look at her, wondering what would happen if she finds out that the boyfriend that she liked so much was a different shade of scum.

"I don’t think he is a patriot of those clubs. In the autopsy, there was no trace of semen in the victim’s body. There was also no trace of sexual assault." Korra spoke up, drinking her tea a little calmly, "For the killer, I think his choice of victims was pure opportunity. Nobody would miss the death of prostitutes and even if they are found, the police tend not to investigate too closely."

"Why would you..." Lisa began to question her but Korra interrupted.

"This is just a speculation. The amount of torture shows this is someone who enjoys other’s pain. For many sadists, sexually assaulting their victims is not just to have an orgasm, it is because that is another form of torture, it would cause the victim more pain and more humiliation and that is what gets them off but we don’t have it in this case. There is a 70% probability that he is impotent."

"But he used a knife to stab them. I read in a forensic textbook that that could also be a sex crime. The knife is some form of penetration." Sarah asked.

Korra was even more patient when replying, "It could be. Some offenders can not get an erection the normal way so they substitute something else. But this killer did not stab them. He slashed them and let them bleed to death after torturing them for days, he held them captive for days and did not do anything sexual, there was no evidence of fondling or bruising. He does not get off on sexual acts. I believe he did not meet them at the club. What is an impotent man going to a club that provides night services to do?" She normally did not speak so much and had to drink some tea to moisten her throat when she was done.

"If he does not go there, that means he surely stays around there. So he can know the best time that he could take them. He probably stays around there." Draco rubbed his jaw as he leaned forward.

"The dumping area is very far from the clubs. I think he probably stays closer to the dumping area than the abduction area as that would raise more suspicions. Maybe he is familiar with the area very well. He would capture the victim on their way home. He must have been observing them for a while." Sarah said, "Captain, are there stores, no cafes, or restaurants near these clubs? Nobody would suspect someone who has lunch at a window seat or outside the restaurant, right? And those restaurants are very busy at night, and drunk people can be very hungry." She added with a bit of embarrassment as she recalled her wild youth.

Arlen clicked on the system and soon shops around the club appeared on the screen, he minimized and enlarged some locations until three key restaurants appeared. One was a spicy crayfish joint, one was a hotpot and another sold barbecued meat and wine.

On the task board, Arlen wrote down the restaurants and the task of investigating the restaurants and interrogating them.

Draco sighed, "But do Restaurants like these have security cameras?" He looked at the rundown spicy crayfish store and felt a little disheartened.

"They do. About seven years old, there was an oden noodle stand that was thrashed by some drunk rich kids and the owner was injured. The families bribed everyone and they claimed that the owner was the one that was drunk and thrashed his store. Unfortunately, the owner had a little camera near the roof of the store so he could make sure his little grandson and his friends were not eating all the food in the store in his absence. He showed the police the recording of the day and the families settled the oden noodles stand owner with 500,000 dollars not to sue. Since then, many stores like this, put cameras in their stores, and many even pray that rich kids could cyst these clubs, come, and thrash their stores. Making money in one night."

After Lisa told the story, everyone blinked.

"We should thank the grandson and his friends then," Draco said and Sarah could not hold her chuckle.

Arlen smiled, "We should pray that these restaurants also have cameras."

"I believe my findings would help in jogging their memory," Korra said and after a nod from Arlen, she stood up and Arlen sat back down.

Korra opened a file and wanted to pin up the photos but decided against it and kept it back in the file, she faced everyone.

"The toxicology report is out. There are two drugs in all of the victims’ systems; all the victims expect one. The oldest victim did not have the tranquilizer in her bloodstream. The possibility that she went with the killer willingly is very high. I would speculate that this was somebody that the victim knew."

Ravi looked at Arlen who looked back at him. The mystery man beside Mary Taylor was looking more like a suspect with each passing moment.
