I Am Tired Of Being A Hero-Chapter 309: The Birthday Gift
Arlen let Sage cool his head in the cell for thirty minutes while he went and interviewed the two people that were arrested with Sage.
He sat in front of the first one that was shouting all kinds of obscenities and placed a large file in front of him.
"Anthony Ude. Arrested for illegal possession of firearms. Caught in possession of counterfeit bills. Should I add aggravated assault to your report?"
The man jumped up from his seat, "You motherfucker. Assault. Where does it look like I assaulted him? He was the one that just came into my turf and started taunting us. That bastard. That fucking bastard. I am going to kill him."
Arlen looked at him coldly, "Should I add criminal threats, intent to commit murder?"
The gangster looked at him and completely shut up, "I want my lawyer."
Arlen scoffed. After interviewing the second one who could barely talk, he had gotten enough information.
He entered the holding cell and dragged Sage out of there.
"Am I not under arrest? Where is Ravi?"
"He is not here. He probably went straight home from here. Don’t tell me you did all that because you wanted to talk to Ravi. You are lucky those two people would not sue you, What if I had booked you? Would you like a criminal charge or a criminal record? Do you think it is going to be fun to go through life with one? You are lucky we are not in the capital. I just do not understand why you would do what you did today. Sage, what were you thinking?"
Sage opened his mouth to say something back but seeing the concern in those blue eyes, he froze. He scratched his head and turned his head, "You don’t have to be so angry. I chose people that I knew would not dare sue me."
The next second, he let out a howl of pain, "Ahhh...Easy...Easy."
Arlen had dragged him by the ear to the front of the car, "Get in."
Sage got in and rubbed his ears before glaring at Arlen, "I am eighteen you know. I am not Ash."
"I seriously believe that Ash would not do the kind of thing that you did today. Sage, you could have gotten hurt."
Sage put on his seatbelt and rolled his eyes, "Two thugs would have hurt me. Yeah, right."
Arlen looked at him. "Are you feeling hungry?"
Sage shook his head and just stared up ahead.
"Well, I am a little hungry."
They did not head to the restaurant as Sage had expected but had gone to the park. Arlen bought some pastries before sitting down on the bench and patted the empty space next to him.
"Here. Have some."
Sage had not tasted this kind of pastry before. It was filled with palm sugar and then rolled around grated coconut. When he bit into it, it exploded inside his mouth with a lava of sweetness.
It was just too sweet. Ash would like this kind of pastry. He turned to the side and saw Arlen enjoying the pastry with relish and he sighed. He was not the kind that carried things in his heart and just his emotions today would not allow him to enjoy his pastry in peace.
The space in front of them tore apart to reveal a purple-rimmed portal, "I need to show you something."
Arlen put the pastry away and stepped in through the portal to the center of the city, not far from the police station or the community college. It was a small one-story building with a storefront.
He looked left and right, a little confused. This was as ordinary as ordinary could get. He turned back to see Sage stepped out of the portal with bewilderment written all over his face.
"You...You dint even wait for me. What if it was a trick?"
Arlen had the urge to say, Sage, do not be silly but he felt that would hurt the sensitive teenager even more so he settled for, "it would be an ingenious trick."
Sage gritted his teeth. That... that patronizing voice was even worse. He was going to prank Arlen until he apologized. Taking a deep breath, he pointed at the building, "This is mine. I am graduating from the workshop next week so Malik gave me the key and deed to this place. He said it was mine. Today is my real birthday. Well, not the real one, but it was 18 years after I was born."
The house was in a prime location so it was extremely good for business, "This is amazing. Congratulations! Good location. Happy Birthday, Sage. We are delighted you were born."
Sage took another deep breath, "You know I blackmailed Malik to adopt me." He looked away from Arlen as if he was ashamed to say the next words, "You know legally, he can..." He stopped here as if he could not bear to complete the words, "I checked upstairs. There is a resting place upstairs."
With that, he turned and looked at Arlen.
Seeing him, standing there, furrowing his brows and biting his lips. He looked so young.
"Sage. Follow me for a moment."
Sage frowned but still followed Arlen. They walked straight for a while before turning left and then left again. Soon they stopped at a huge signboard.
Davenport Community College.
"Five minutes." Arlen said and then patted Sage’s head, "Don’t doubt him. If he did not care, do you think he would keep you by his side for so long? Sage, we are delighted you were born. Happy Birthday."
"What are the two of you whispering about?" It was Malik’s voice. Blank green eyes stared down at them from the first floor of the balcony. "Sage, come up. I have been waiting for you since this morning. The cleaner did not come today."
Sage looked touched but the moment Malik spoke, he gritted his teeth, "Malik! Don’t tell me that you bought that building so that I would come over to clean your office?"
Malik cocked his head, "Of course not. You need to bring me lunch as well." His voice was low and gentle.
"Malik!"
Arlen looked around. Malik was whispering, they could hear him clearly and yet no one was looking at them. They watched the fuming Sage and chuckled. His phone beeped and he looked down at his phone, then looked up with a smile.
"Sage, Ravi asked, would you prefer Lobsters or Sea Bass?"
"Oooh! Lobsters! I have not had that in forever."
"Sea Bass is the clear choice. What happened to having a refined palate?"
Sage rolled his eyes, "When I was ten, we had cereal for an entire week."
"It was seven different types of cereal, Arlen. There was also a variety of fruit and nuts cereal. Don’t mind him, I was an excellent guardian."
Arlen chuckled and then looked up at Malik to ask...
"He is at the seafood market."
Shopping for your ward’s birthday. Arlen said clearly in his mind. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
The reply was equally as clear, "Your brother is also there. He is paying."
