It wasn’t because she was cute

Claude first met Violet when his parents took him to a tea party at the Duke Elford’s mansion.

She was a seven year old girl, two years younger than him, but she had a strange presence.

“…So you’re the second son of Marquis Bradley who’s been getting along with Johannes lately”

“My name is Claude Bradley. It’s an honor to meet you.”

When I introduced myself, she narrowed her eyes and looked at me like she was evaluating me.

“I heard you aspire to be a knight. They say you have talent with sword, and that the knight commander under the direct command of the king, is personally training you”

“Ohh, I see that the rumors have reached to Violet sama’s ears as well. I am embarrassed to say this myself, but our son seems to be overflowing with talent-”

“You are as always, Lord Bradley”

Duke Elford chuckles at his father’s habit of praising his family whenever he gets a chance.

Claude hated his father slightly inside. His father is always like this, and recently, it’s been a depressing experience for him to go out with his father.

Violet opens her mouth at Claude.

“You will serve Johannes?”

“Yes, I would like to do so”

Violet’s eyes narrowed at Claude’s words.

“I can’t believe you’re going to serve that lazy prince. You-” (*She used omae here)

On the way to his own office after he left Violet’s room, Claude recalled the time when he just met Violet.

( ^You’re going to die in vain working for that lazy prince. Being a knight, in other words, the kingdom’s dog. You’re fitted to that role^ I got told such things huh)

Arrogant girl.

That was my impression of her at our first meeting. She was also snickering at Claude who didn’t show much reaction, and saying, “You’re such a boring guy”. It could be said that first impressions of each other were the worst.

However, His Majesty heard that Claude did not respond to Violet’s remarks, and somehow, as the first fiance candidate, he often had to work together with her. And then even if he didn’t like it, her deeds came to his eyes.

It was the beginning when she had a young lady who displeased her, removed from the evening party after hurling harsh words at her. In the worst case, she reached out to the family and drove them to the brink of bankruptcy.

There was a family who fell.

It was the house of a friend of Claude. The reason was that his friend’s sister had stepped on the hem of Violet’s dress at an evening party.

Please mediate between; Claude recalled his friend saying that, his forehead grazing the ground.

“If you don’t return the disrespect with double, some day, that will always follow in your footsteps”

Violet said nothing more to Claude who bowed his head, asking her to somehow forgive them.

Claude didn’t think the downfall of the house was proportionate to the discourtesy of having the hem of the dress stepped on. Looking around, there was not a single person who avenged like that. Violet made a name for herself as a villainess, and she even seemed to enjoy it gracefully.

Watching her up close, I had come to regard her as the worst kind of person.

(…I didn’t think she would have the heart to cry in memory of her mother)

I recall the time I brought her breakfast this morning.

Normally, I would’ve left after I put the breakfast down, but at the moment, my curiosity got the better of me, and I wondered if she would actually eat the honey which she was supposed to hate.

It was absolutely not because of her appearance when her eyes lit up at the french toast was too cute, nor was it because I was worried she would choke on it in her haste.

She cautiously took a bite, and after her cheeks loosened because of happiness, her tears fell down uncontrollably.

(If I remember correctly, her mother passed away…when she was 5)

Claude had heard rumors about her mother. She was a very beautiful person. She was called Princess Violet because of her pale purple eyes, and men all over the kingdom fell in love with her.

Perhaps not wanting to be reminded of the death of her beloved mother, Violet has become averse to anything that reminds her of flowers since her mother passed away.

Even Johannes and Claude had no idea that she disliked honey, though.

(…It must be true that she’s lonely after her mother’s death)

Claude thinks the tears were not an act. Even if it was an act, Violet is a woman who hates to show her vulnerable side.

He never thought that she would show such appearance to him.

Being concerned, he went to her room to have lunch with her, and was again surprised and confused.

When he knocked, and there was no answer, he called out to her, wondering if she collapsed again, but when he entered her room, he found her with a serious look on her face, boiling something in a pot and writing something on the piece of paper in her hand.

(What was that all about? She had such profound knowledge. How was she so familiar with it, just who..)

She was a bright woman to begin with.

However, it is the cleverness that immediately detects the opponent’s weakness and leads them to a situation that is advantageous to her. With her broad vision and quick-thinking, she could be described as natural ruler.

But today she pursued a single truth— a different perspective from her natural talent. It was like a researcher’s perspective, in Claude’s opinion.

(My head is a mess. —Damn, the more I think about it, the more I don’t get it)

He swears inwardly.

I have to go to the royal palace to report now, but I don’t know how to do it.

(—I’m certain even if I reported about she planned to make today, it wouldn’t be surprising to be ordered to take these things away after suspecting what she’s scheming)

The fact there is a fire in the room itself is unusual.

Claude clicks his tongue as he finds himself thinking about how to report this without arousing suspicion. This is like he is thinking he wants to protect her.

2/2 done. I am sorry if there’s any awkward parts; my eyes were heavy during translating. You don’t have to be reserved if you have any good suggestions for those parts. Anyways, posting two Chapters a day sure is tough for a beginner like me. I am glad I am going back to a Chapter a day.
