I Became A Side Character Fated To Suffer-Chapter 39: Survive In Chaos Forest
"Didn’t you say there’s gonna be trouble?" Noel enquired Reed as they were thrown out.
"Trouble..What trouble?" Eleanor shouted at the back, making Noel shut up instantly.
Damn!
He didn’t think she was this close.
Elderic turned towards them and looked at Reed, wondering who this guy was whom Noel was treating well.
"Cough... I mean you are causing trouble.. And didn’t you see what happened.. Hahaha..." Reed gave a bitter laugh.
As they bickered, a figure appeared.
"Good afternoon kids... I am Revolt.."
"As for who I am and what I do, no need to know... I am here to tell you that I am gonna send you there."
"There?"
"Where there?"
As questions were asked, Revolt pointed. And as everyone followed his gaze, they saw a huge forest in sight through the spacious window.
"That forest.."
"It’s a personally groomed forest affected by Chaos... You will be sent there for training, but before that."
"All of you are gonna be handed over a watch that will monitor your vitals.. The moment chaos energy tries to take over your entire existence,it will act and pull you out," as Revolt explained, a certain boy shouted.
"Sir.. If there is a device that can protect us, why do we need to learn all this bullshit?"
Revolt froze.
Slowly he looked up, as if searching for the idiot who came up with this question.
"Idiot.." he muttered underneath.
"The level of chaos energy is quite less here, whereas in actual places it’s so drastic that you can’t be saved by an artifact."
"Also do you know how costly that is? And for God’s sake look at your social status.. You aren’t any better than beggars, and even if you become a high level warrior it’s still difficult to get your hands on it."
"This one provided by the Academy is bare minimum, yet it costs 1000 gold coins."
Hiccup.
Cough.
The cadets started coughing after hearing this.
1000 gold coins.
Such an amount.
They can’t even get it back even if they sell themselves.
"Now stop with this bullshit and get out there."
"Aesaaaa! Get these shits out there," he shouted.
The next moment a clap resounded—
And everyone’s figure was blurred.
The moment the clap echoed, the world twisted.
It wasn’t the normal kind of teleportation the cadets had heard about in stories where people gracefully vanished in flashes of light like heroic mages.
No.
This one felt like someone had grabbed the entire group, stuffed them into a sack, spun that sack violently ten times, kicked it down a mountain, and then finally decided to dump the contents somewhere in the middle of a forest.
FWOOOSH!
The scenery warped.
Trees stretched around and the ground bent.
The sky spun and then..
THUD!
THUMP!
BAM!
CRASH!
Dozens of cadets fell from the air like a sack of poorly packed potatoes.
One boy landed face slammes into mud.
Another rolled down a small slope screaming while hugging a tree branch like it was the last rope on earth.
Someone else somehow landed directly inside a bush filled with thorns and immediately began screaming like he had discovered a new level of pain that humanity had not previously documented.
Reed himself landed on his back with a loud whump, the air leaving his lungs in one violent burst.
For several seconds he just lay there staring at the sky.
"...I think my organs changed positions."
Beside him Elderic groaned loudly while sitting up and holding his head like it had just been used as a hammer.
"Why... why does teleportation always feel like the mage hates us personally?"
A few meters away Eleanor had landed perfectly on her feet.
For exactly two seconds. Then she slipped on wet leaves and fell on her backside.
"...I meant to do that."
No one believed her.
Around them the forest was enormous.
Ancient trees towered over them like pillars of a cathedral.
The air felt thick and heavy.
And somewhere deep in the woods an unsettling wind moved through the branches, creating a low whispering sound that made several cadets immediately regret every life decision that had brought them to this academy.
A nervous boy slowly raised his hand while looking around.
"...Sir?"
There was no answer.
"Wait. What are the instructions?"
"Are we here to fight or survive?"
"Are we in a team or alone.."
"What the fuck?"
"This is bullshit."
Another cadet looked around nervously.
"Where’s the instructor?"
"There.." Noel walked out and pointed upward lazily.
Everyone followed his finger.
Floating above them in the air like someone watching a particularly entertaining street performance was Revolt.
He had his arms folded and he looked extremely amused.
"Oh good," he said casually, "none of you died during teleportation."
One cadet weakly raised his hand from the ground.
"I think I might have..."
"Walk it off."
The cadet slowly lowered his hand again.
Revolt then snapped his fingers.
Small metallic watches suddenly appeared in the hands of every cadet.
"Put them on."
Everyone quickly obeyed.
Mostly because nobody wanted to be the next volunteer for "entering the forest first."The watch clicked around Noel’s wrist with a soft metallic sound.
For a moment the device hummed faintly.
Then a small blue light flashed.
Vitals Stabilized Chaos Monitoring Activated
Noel blinked and spoke"...This thing is smarter than half the academy administration."
Elderic looked at his own watch and whispered nervously.
"If this thing costs 1000 gold coins... do you think the academy will kill us if we lose it?"
Noel looked at Elderic in disgust, "Aren’t you the disciple of Silvia.. Surely you can’t be that poor."
Elderic’s expression fell for some reason, and before Noel could ask Reed whispered, "Actually he is?"
"Instead of giving money Silvia used to take his head earned money."
"...."
Noel looked at Elderic who nodded pitifully.
’Ah...Should I hire him and give some money to survive..’
Revolt slowly looked down at the entire group, his expression suddenly losing most of its amusement.
"Alright children. Listen here."
His voice echoed across the forest.
"The rules are simple."
A long pause followed.
Then he pointed deeper into the forest where the trees grew darker and thicker.
"You survive in that forest for twelve hours."
Silence.
Several cadets blinked.
"...That’s it?" someone asked hopefully.
Revolt smiled.
It was not a comforting smile.
"Of course not."
He casually raised one finger.
"First rule."
"The 12 hour rule is just for the weakling.. You see that mountain?"
Everyone saw a huge mountain rising up.
"Reach there and grab the flag.. You will be teleported back.. And yeah that also decides your position and points as the first one to do so will be ranked 1 of this test."
He then raised his second finger.
"You are allowed to do anything.. Hell you can even kill your buddies." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Everyone’s expression fell upon hearing this.
Surely it was a joke..
Right??
He then raised his third finger.
"You are not allowed to cry."
Several cadets immediately looked offended.
"That is discrimination."
Revolt ignored them.
"And lastly..."
He leaned forward slightly.
"The forest is affected by Chaos."
The air suddenly felt colder.
"You will encounter corrupted beasts and you might experience hallucinations."
"And if your mind is weak..."
His smile widened.
"You might start attacking trees because you think they are monsters which isn’t wrong as some trees affected by Chaos can also attack.’’
A cadet slowly looked at a nearby tree and inches away.
"...Just checking... that one isn’t a monster right?"
Revolt clapped once again.
"Training begins now."
And then his figure disappeared and the forest fell silent.
For several seconds no one moved.
Then Reed slowly looked at Noel.
"...So."
"...Should we panic now or later?"
Noel stood up, brushing dirt off his clothes while staring at the dark forest ahead.
"We can panic later as.."
He hadn’t even finished his sentence when a loud roar suddenly echoed from somewhere deep inside the forest.
