Chapter 640: Chapter 455 Important_2

"Is all this really just a coincidence?" Liao Yijie muttered, his gaze falling upon the whiteboard before him. His deputy had already left.

On the board, several photographs were tacked up, but most were crossed out with a red pen. Only one remained untouched.

Looking at the person in the photo, Liao Yijie shivered uncontrollably, as if the figure was staring right back at him.

Liao Yijie didn’t know much about these photographs. After all, just yesterday, when the Tufeng Group realized they could no longer clear their name after their criminal evidence was leaked, most of their senior executives had fled.

But now that the authorities had the evidence, Liao Yijie knew they wouldn’t get far. However, they had taken countless other documents with them when they left. The chairman’s office was almost completely empty, save for the whiteboard and the few photos on it.

Still, based on his understanding of the Tufeng Group, Liao Yijie could make an educated guess. The people on this whiteboard were likely the group’s targets. He just didn’t know how the Tufeng Group had intended to deal with them.

As Liao Yijie pondered, the door opened again, and a Protector ran in.

"Director, we’ve managed to find information on most of the people on the board," he said, handing a stack of files to Liao Yijie.

He was referring to the individuals in the photographs, whom Liao Yijie had ordered his men to investigate earlier. Opening the file and scanning its contents, his expression grew grim.

Nearly everyone on the whiteboard was dead. Most had died in various "accidents," though some had perished at the hands of Fang Liwen.

It seemed that even while trying to appear legitimate, the Tufeng Group was still engaged in murder. They never left any traces, so it wasn’t until now that Liao Yijie realized the group was far from being as clean as it appeared. Even the criminal evidence they had previously obtained didn’t include these killings.

"Besides these two, everyone else on the whiteboard is dead," the Protector at his side added.

"Two are still alive?"

"Yes, their information is on the last page." As he spoke, the Protector flipped the file in Liao Yijie’s hands to the final page.

On this page were only two photographs. One had extensive information written beneath it, while the other had nothing at all.

"Wu Jiasheng, Director Wu’s son," Liao Yijie muttered. "I didn’t expect he’d be targeted by the Tufeng Group. If the group hadn’t collapsed, Wu Jiasheng would have been in great danger."

Seeming to remember something, Liao Yijie gave an order to the man beside him. "Even though the Tufeng Group is gone, many of them escaped. They might still go after Wu Jiasheng. For the time being, send someone to protect him."

"Understood. I’ll arrange it when I get back," the Protector replied with a nod.

Liao Yijie then turned his attention to the second photograph, a copy of the one still on the whiteboard. "Who is this? Why is there no information on him?" he asked.

"We’re not sure," the Protector said, shaking his head. "We couldn’t find any trace of this person in the Xiangjiang resident archives. He’s probably not a resident."

Hearing this, Liao Yijie just nodded without responding.

After all, judging by the marks on the whiteboard, this person’s photo hasn’t been crossed out, which means the Tufeng Group hasn’t made a move against him yet. He should be fine. He just wasn’t sure if the escaped members would still seek revenge. That was why Liao Yijie still hoped to find and protect the man.

As he stared at the photograph, a puzzled look appeared in his eyes.

How did you manage to get tangled up with the Tufeng Group?

Standing before the whiteboard, Liao Yijie couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief for the last two people on it. Although he didn’t know how they had provoked the Tufeng Group, they were now much safer than before, regardless.

「At the same time.」

A Protector walked up from behind him. "Director, this floor has been completely checked. All that’s left are these photos. If you could please step aside..."

Hearing this, Liao Yijie moved to the side. The Protector then began carefully collecting the photographs from the whiteboard, placing them one by one into a file bag. By now, the Xiangjiang Yamen had cleared out nearly all the remaining evidence from the Tufeng Group’s headquarters.

"Now, we just wait for the fugitive Tufeng Group executives to be caught," Liao Yijie muttered to himself as he started walking slowly toward the door.

Just then, the sound of urgent footsteps echoed from the hallway.

An extremely excited Protector, clutching a file bag, ran up to Liao Yijie. He was so thrilled he could barely speak. The moment he entered, he saw the other Protector collecting the photos and immediately shouted, "Wait! Hold off on the photos for a moment!"

Liao Yijie chuckled. "What is it, Xiao Wu? What’s all the excitement about?" With both the Tufeng Group and Fang Liwen dealt with, he couldn’t imagine what could possibly get the man this worked up.

But the man he called Xiao Wu just waved the file bag excitedly, his words coming out in a stutter. "We... we just captured a fleeing Tufeng Group executive! We found some documents on him."

And here I thought it was something serious. Liao Yijie felt Xiao Wu was being a bit dramatic. "We’ve already found all of Tufeng Group’s criminal evidence. A few more documents are just icing on the cake. Is that really worth getting so excited about?"

"This is different," Xiao Wu insisted, shaking the file bag again. He tried to open it, but his hands were trembling too much.

"How are these documents different?" Liao Yijie’s interest was piqued.

Xiao Wu explained, "This isn’t just criminal evidence. It’s..." He pointed to the whiteboard behind Liao Yijie. "It’s the Tufeng Group’s intelligence on the people on this board, including their reasons for targeting them!"

"This..." Liao Yijie glanced back at the whiteboard. A Yamen clerk had already taken down most of the photos, leaving only a few.

"But we’ve already looked up most of these people through the Yamen System," Liao Yijie added. "We still don’t know why the Tufeng Group went after them, but that shouldn’t be important now, right? Most of them are dead, and the Tufeng Group is gone. What does it matter why they were targeted? Is this information really worth your excitement?"

"No, not all of them! The others don’t matter! It’s the last one... the information on the last person!" Xiao Wu finally managed to rip the bag open, but his movements were so large that the documents scattered all over the floor. He immediately dropped to his knees, frantically searching for the file he wanted to show Liao Yijie.

Liao Yijie now understood what Xiao Wu was getting at. He turned his gaze back to the only photograph on the whiteboard that hadn’t been crossed out with a red pen. It was the only one they had no leads on, the only person they couldn’t identify.

Why is Xiao Wu saying this person’s information is more important than all the others?

As Xiao Wu continued to search through the scattered files on the floor, he realized Liao Yijie still didn’t grasp the full picture, and he began to explain excitedly as he searched.
