Chapter 20: The Night Before the Surge

The moon shined Brightly, Casting its glow below at the Nozvan estate. The market and the city were briming with people, some were merchant, some were Mercenaries and some were passerby staying the night here.

Among the crowd, wearing a black robe and a plain mask was Kairos towards the city walls. The walls enclosed the city specially the ones at gates towering high protecting its people watching over the threat of hundred thousand mountains.

Few guards stood checking identities of those entering or leaving the city.

Kairos approached the line of people heading outside the city and soon his own turn came. He took out a small silver badge from his leather pouch. The guard examined it briefly before opening the gate, allowing him to pass through.

’It’s Quite handy I say’ he thought putting it away. It was the badge his father gave him to venture out and train it belong the Star mercenary guild.

It’s been a months,he had the dual with his father. During this time his father trained him spared with him endlessly almost every day, Honing his skills.

Kairos Couldn’t help but say it was quite worthwhile. Still, he had to hold back many things Such as his Swordsmanship style and most importantly His odd element, The infinity element.

Thus, it becomes a crucial thing to train on his own, like this. He Gazed far. Towards the endless forest that spread to the horizon with occasional Mountains peeking out.

As he moved closer the number of people started to reduce but those that can be seen all wear equipped with heavy gears carrying small carcasses of monsters on their backs or in carts.

Those were Mercenaries doing their Daily hunt. Kairos gave them a glance before minding his own business heading deeper into the forest away from the common path people usually take.

Moments later, as he walked deeper and deeper Kairos’s gaze sharpened, his eyes glowing with a crimson light.

Then all of a sudden, He took a step back, allowing the dark silhouette that had lunged at him to sail past, crashing into the ground.

It turned Glaring at him, not pleased with its attack failing.

Kairos took out his hand from his robes, Right away his soul gear materialized on his hand causing the beast to be on guard, Flaring it’s fur and it’s claws.

’A dark leopard’ Kairos muttered unhinged of it’s appreance. It’s a beast of second rank.Whos core just started forming while it’s getting adepted to to how to use mana.

Usually to kill such beast one needs to be atleast Silver rank in mercenary terms or gets atleast party of three of bronze rank Mercenaries, But he was different.

A sigil appeared around his feet’s, Before instantly getting covered in purple mist multiplying by four.

Kairos eyes glowed, ’3x’ he uttered. Right away two of the sigils around his feet’s activated and surge of energy rushed into him.

Grinning behind the mask He lunged forward. But to the Dark leopard, Right Infront of it’s eyes. It’s pray vanished. it panicked and turned around to locate it’s prey.

Just too see legs beside, close very close. Before it could react further.

Slink~

Kairos swing down, With a fluid motion.

A sickening snap echoed through the forest, and blood sprayed outward, the head flew briefly into the air before tumbling to the ground. The body also gone stuff instantly and fall down with a thud.

Kairos took a step back from the pile of blood. Nodding in satisfaction.

"My speed of activating them increased but it’s still quite slow" He uttered looking down his legs.

Where one pairs of sigils could be seen of his legs. Next second they Gradually vanished as he cut of the mana.

’But its sure is amazing’

What he just used was the Sigil of agility one of the few sigils one can use Right after forming the Zeroth circle.

As it sounded, It boosts the muscles reaction speed for a few moments. Referred to as one of the useless sigils which only guards use. But his case was different! To him it was very broken!

Usually it gives so little amount of boost it’s not relevant for mages nor for knights also the fact it was just a first circle sigil, None cares about it.

But he was different, With his odd infinity element he can duplicate them depending on mana. Currently he can activate it four times! Simultaneously or can choose to activate them separately as long he supplies mana. And the number of them will increase as he gradually increases his spell zone size.

Kairos started heading deeper, Into the forest. Usually he stays at the outer edge of the hundred thousand Forest. But to push himself he has to face tougher monsters and also to prepare for the journey to the Owsdin Academy at the end of this year, He has to gather cores and money.

His family was rich, and well fed. But there’s a limit how much he can ask for, and also the limit how much they can provide. He has find himself another source for that. And what better then hunting.

After half an hour, After dealing with some Red beaded snakes which were just first tier Beast, kairos climbed up an tree to scout his next prey.

And after a few moments of scouting, he finally spotted a worthy prey. Its body was covered in red fur, speckled with black dots.

’Oh a red-dotted boar’, Kairos thought. Not bad, a second-tier beast.

The creature growled as it barreled through the densely packed forest.

Did it already notice me? Kairos wondered. But then he frowned.

The boar charged frantically, squealing as it crashed through the forest straight towards his direction..

Kairos narrowed his eyes. It’s not coming for me... it’s running from something.

Simultaneously more and more roars erupted from deeper within the forest. One after another, more shadows burst from the trees,red-dotted shapes crashing through the forest causing slight tremors. Causing a few trees to collapse.

"Shit... a Surge," Kairos muttered, his mind racing.

A Monster Surge rare, but devastating. It happens when a powerful beast from the Core Zone shifts its territory, forcing every creature beneath it to flee. The ripple spreads outward: Core monsters drive the Upper Zone into chaos, which pushes the Middle, then the Lower, and finally the Outer Zone. By the time it reaches the edge, entire hordes of beasts pour out causing havoc at near by cities.

"This is bad... very bad," Kairos muttered.

He knows the state of their state. It was declining slowly in man power, And the paragon they had was an old model.

True, the city was crowded with mercenaries and adventurers thanks to the upcoming Owsdin Academy admission. On the surface, it can be considered a blessing as they would defend the city.

But that’s exactly the problem... the city would take damage, and the mercenaries brought in for help would demand their due. And in the chaos, anything could happen robbery, looting, even worse.

In short, the city would survive... barely, clinging to life by its last thread. Normally, every baron is expected to wield the 5th Circle when the Aura Field awakens, a power strong enough to drive monsters away.

But their case was different. The 5th Circle their greatest strength was injured and still recovering. His grandfather, the former baron of the Nozvan family, was unlikely to unleash the suppression needed to hold back the surge.

"Fuck... this is bad." The more Kairos considered it, the more the weight of the situation pressed down on him.

His father won’t be able to reveal his true power considering his past. He knows his mother is strong too.. but he was sure she won’t be strong enough to handle everything, Mercenaries help is needed.

Kairos leapt down from the tree, sprinting toward the city. If worst comes to worst, I might have to sell that thing my father has... wait is this how Darknight lost it to stabilize the place?

The object he referred to was the Seed of Life a seed from a fruit of immense value. Not just any fruit, but the Fruit of Life from the last remaining World Tree, protected by the Union of Veronica Forest.

Its fruit could rejuvenate anyone, even bring them back from the brink of death. Potions made from it could simulate a Mana Surge, giving ordinary people hope to awaken their mana. Naturally, the fruit was highly sought after.

The seeds, while not capable of replicating the fruit’s miraculous powers, were still incredibly valuable. They could cure the infamous Mana Influx, a rare but devastating condition.

It was something that money can’t buy. As the last time the tree gave fruits was a century ago! Thus it was very rare till the day.

"No... I can’t lose that. Damn it, this situation keeps getting worse," Kairos muttered, dashing through the forest.

He needed the seed not for the Mana Influx, but for something entirely different something whose true purpose would only be revealed later. In fact, for that hidden reason, the seed was far more valuable than the fruit itself.

If the fruit can bring back someone who’s in blink off death. Then the seed actually can bring someone from death.

The technique nor the use hasn’t been invented yet but the moment it gets generalize to public. Its value will sky rocket.
