Chapter 23 - The Price of Truth

"Beast Appraising – Only 20 Silvers! 100% Accuracy!"

The stall was set in the bustling market, a prime location to attract every passerby's gaze.

Rex and Darius sat on the floor with enthusiasm, their faces radiating with happiness to attract customers.

"Do you think you can get customers if you reduce your price from 5 gold coins to 20 silvers? Beast appraising is one of the hardest yet easiest jobs to make money from, if that makes sense to you," he advised them and continued minding his job.

"Yeah, Rex, why are we reducing the prices?" Darius questioned, agreeing with the shopkeeper's advice.

Rex shook his head. "We are not here for money but to make a name for ourselves," he explained.

And with Eye of Tamer, I won't be doing much either, Rex thought while using it on the shopkeeper.

Should I tame him? I don't want to waste any slots, and I don't want to kill him either. He seems like a nice guy, Rex mused, and as if he realized something...

System, can I undo taming after taming them? he questioned curiously.

Rex exhaled a long sigh. Meanwhile, many people had walked past Rex's stall; a few sneered at him, while others mocked, and some even called him a scammer.

"100% accuracy? What a load of bullshit."

"Look, even kids can appraise a beast."

"Heeh... nice way to scam money out of people."

Rex just sat there, unfazed by their scornful gazes and remarks. Yet, Darius gazed back at them as if he were in a competition.

However, not everyone's gazes were filled with detest; there were some curious eyes too.

"Can you appraise my beast? Just 20 silvers, right?" a thin man questioned while eyeing Rex curiously.

"Yes, sir." Rex tilted his head upward and smiled brightly with a nod.

"Here you go. If it's just 20 silvers, I'll try my luck, even though other appraisers said it's a normal beast." The thin man handed Rex the money along with a palm-sized spider.

"Oh," Rex muttered after holding the spider in his palm for a minute.

"What is it?" the man asked nervously.

"As luck would have it, it's a... Bileflinger Bloodline Spider." Rex paused before mentioning its bloodline, then carefully handed the man his spider. As he held it in his palm, his eyes sparkled.

"R-Really?" he questioned, barely containing his happiness.

"Haha, I'm 100% certain, sir," Rex chuckled after seeing the man's excitement.

"Thank you! If this turns out to be true, I'll come back and reward you handsomely," he said cheerfully before disappearing into the crowd.

"Please don't tell me you lied to him," Darius asked anxiously.

"Don't worry, I'm not lying to them."

As the man cheered, he gathered everyone's attention, and before Rex knew it, customers swarmed his stall, bringing all kinds of beasts for evaluation.

"Unluckily, sir, your beast has no bloodline."

"No bloodline."

"No bloodline."

But among the crowd, a figure lurked in the shadows, watching silently.

Then, another customer—a young man—stepped in, cutting the line as the crowd gave him way.

He quickly pushed 20 silvers into Rex's hand and presented a tortoise beast. "Here. Now appraise it."

Rex swiftly checked both of their statuses after noticing the crowd's wariness towards him.

Rex took the tortoise from the young man and examined it—at least, he pretended to—taking his time for a full two minutes.

Then, he responded, "Unfortunately, sir, your beast has no bloodline." He shook his head and handed the tortoise back.

"Haha! We've got a fraud here!" The man laughed, pointing at Rex in front of the gathered crowd.

"I was testing you. I just bought this Earthwarden Tortoise with my entire life savings, you scammer!" The young man raised his voice, brimming with confidence.

"..."

"And guess what? I bought it from the Bloodline Traders, backed by a highly experienced appraiser." He smirked, almost laughing at Rex for what he believed was an attempted scam.

Gasps and murmurs spread among the waiting customers.

Darius leaned in. "From the same scammers, you bought the Flame Roc from?" he whispered into Rex's ear in a hushed tone.

Sigh~ "Whatever." He sighed and mumbled "Can't blame you, poor thing, for trying to make ends meet." The young man shook his head dejectedly before ordering, "Let's go, Bruno." His bodyguard, who had been standing behind him like a watchdog.

"Sir, as the advertisement states, we have 100% accuracy." Rex's calm stopped them in their tracks. He refused to let his name be smeared on the very first day.

"You bastard! Don't lie to our young master, or I'll skin you alive," the bodyguard snarked, then glanced at his young master with an expression that seemed to ask, 'Did I do good, Master?'

Just then, the suspicious figure stepped forward from the shadows and shouted, "Stop scamming Young Master Andrew, you fraudulent bastard!" making sure everyone heard him clearly.

Andrew turned to the stranger, narrowing his eyes. "Who are you? I can speak for myself, so shut up!" he snapped, silencing him instantly.

In the meantime, the suspicious figures status flashed before Rex's eyes.

"I'm in a good mood and being nice to you, Appraiser, so why don't you stop lying? I could have you killed, and no one would bat an eye," Andrew warned, turning back to Rex.

Rex sighed. Poor guy was definitely scammed by those Bloodline Traders.

No longer willing to entertain the drama, Rex stated firmly, "I'm being serious, sir. That is a Mudveil Tortoise, and it has no bloodline. I stand by what I said—it's up to you whether you believe me or not." He forced a smile.

The young man frowned. After staring at Rex for a few moments, he turned and left without a word. One by one, the other customers followed suit, dispersing into the crowd.

Darius shot Rex a scrutinizing look. "I have many questions, but I'll refrain from asking them."

Rex nodded approvingly, offering a thankful smile.

Hours passed, yet no one approached Rex's stall for beast appraisal after the dramatic incident.

"Haah..." Rex exhaled audibly.

"Let's pack up, Darius, and find an inn," Rex said. They both gathered their things and set off in search of a place to stay for the night.

After asking around, they finally received directions.

Navigating through dark alleyways, they took a sharp turn—only to pause as they spotted several figures clad in dark clothes and masks.

Rex ignored them, continuing forward. Darius followed closely behind, both of them minding their own business.

Thugs? Rex thought.

"You with the silver hair, are you the 100% accuracy guy?" the leader in front asked in a casual tone.
