'I Do' For Revenge-Chapter 260: To New Beginnings
~LAYLA~
"You may kiss the bride."
Axel’s hand cupped my face gently, his thumb brushing away a tear. I watched him lean in slowly, giving me time to close the distance. And when our lips finally met, it was tender, full of promise, and nothing like the rushed kiss at the courthouse back then.
This was a vow sealed with love, not contracts.
The crowd broke out in applause and cheers. Autumn leaves swirled around us like nature’s confetti as we broke apart, both laughing through our tears.
"Ready?" Axel whispered, offering his arm.
"Ready," I said, taking it.
We walked back down the aisle together as husband and wife, really and truly this time, toward a future we were choosing with open eyes and honest hearts.
—
The reception tent glowed with golden hour light, filtering through white fabric and casting everything in a warm, dreamlike haze. String lights twinkled overhead, and the autumn flowers Helena had meticulously arranged filled the space with colour and life.
I watched our guests celebrating around us, and for the first time in my life, I saw genuine happiness rather than a societal obligation. These people were here because they wanted to be, because they cared.
"Time for the bouquet toss!" Helena announced, gathering all the single women onto the dance floor.
I turned my back to them, counting down. "Three, two, one!"
I tossed the bouquet over my shoulder. There was a scramble, some laughter, and then Helena emerged victorious, clutching the peonies with a mixture of triumph and embarrassment.
Tye grinned at her from across the tent, and her blush deepened.
"Oh, that’s interesting," I said, nudging Axel.
"Very interesting," he agreed, smiling.
Julian approached us tentatively, holding a glass of champagne. "Layla, Axel, I just wanted to say thank you for letting me be here. It means everything."
"You’re family, Julian," I said simply. "Complicated, messy family, but family nonetheless."
"I won’t let you down," he promised. "I’m going to be better. I’m going to be the cousin you deserve."
"I believe you," I said, meaning it. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
After he walked away, a group of Eclipse Beauty employees approached, raising their glasses. "To the CEO who survived it all!" one of them called out.
"To Layla and Axel!" another added. "The power couple who proved that love conquers all!"
I laughed, raising my glass of sparkling cider. "To all of you for standing by Eclipse through everything."
The Duke stood up then, tapping his glass for attention. The tent quietened as everyone turned to face him.
"I wasn’t planning to make a speech," he began in a warm but emotional voice. "But watching today unfold, I find I have things that need to be said."
He looked at me, then at Axel. "I’m going to tell you something I never told Layla’s grandmother enough: watching the people you love find happiness is the greatest gift of old age."
My throat tightened.
"Axel," the Duke continued, "you’re the son my son would have been. You’ve shown strength, courage, and most importantly, the ability to choose love over vengeance. That’s the hardest choice anyone can make."
Axel’s hand found mine under the table, squeezing tight.
"Layla, you’re the granddaughter who saved our family name. You took something broken and made it beautiful again. You brought light back into this family."
Tears streamed down my face.
"And that little girl you’re carrying?" The Duke’s voice cracked. "She’ll be born into a family that finally knows how to love without conditions, without manipulation, without fear. She’ll know only joy."
He raised his glass high. "To new beginnings, to truth, and to the family we’ve built from ashes. May you both have the happiness you’ve fought so hard to find."
"To new beginnings!" everyone echoed.
The band started playing a slow song, and Axel stood and offered his hand. "May I have this dance, Mrs O’Brien?"
"You may, Mr O’Brien," I said, taking it.
He led me to the centre of the dance floor, pulling me close. One hand held mine, the other rested protectively on my belly as we swayed to the music.
"She’s moving," I whispered suddenly, feeling the now-familiar flutter.
"Really?" Axel’s eyes lit up.
"Put your hand here." I guided his hand to where the movement was strongest.
We stood there swaying, waiting. Then it came... a small but definite kick against his palm.
"She’s dancing with us," Axel said in awe.
"She’s celebrating," I agreed. "She knows she’s loved."
"She’ll always be loved," Axel promised, his hand gentle on my stomach. "Always."
—
Later, when the party was in full swing and no one was watching, Axel led me away from the tent to a quiet corner of the garden.
"I need a moment," he said. "Just us."
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
Instead of answering, he knelt before me, his hands on my hips, his face level with my belly. He kissed it gently, reverently.
"I promise you, little one," he whispered to our unborn daughter. "You’ll never know the fear your mother knew. You’ll never doubt if you’re wanted. You’re the best thing I never planned for."
My hand found his hair, running through it gently. "She’s lucky to have you."
"I’m lucky to have both of you," he said, looking up at me. "I didn’t deserve this second chance, but I’m going to spend every day earning it."
"You already have," I said softly. "You’re here. You’re choosing us. That’s all that matters."
As the sun set, the Duke’s surprise unfolded: a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the darkening sky. Everyone gathered outside the tent, faces turned upward in wonder.
"Your grandfather really went all out," Axel said, wrapping his arms around me from behind.
"He’s happy," I said, leaning back against him. "Really happy. I don’t think he’s been this happy in a long time."
Around us, I could see Tye and Helena dancing close, their earlier awkwardness forgotten. The Duke was waltzing with an old friend, both of them laughing. Even Julian looked relaxed, talking animatedly with other guests.
This was what family was supposed to feel like. Not obligation or manipulation, but genuine joy in each other’s company.
As the last firework faded, the band started playing again. Axel took my hand, leading me back to the dance floor for one final dance.
We moved slowly, barely swaying, just holding each other as the stars began to appear overhead.
"Are you happy?" I asked quietly.
"I didn’t know I could be this happy," Axel said, his cheek against mine. "After my parents died, I thought happiness was something other people had. Something I’d given up the right to feel."
"And now?"
"Now I have everything," he said simply. "A wife who challenges me, forgives me, and loves me despite knowing all my worst parts. A daughter on the way, a family that actually feels like family. I didn’t think this existed."
"Neither did I," I admitted. "I spent so long thinking love was just another form of control. But this..." I gestured around us, "...this is real."
"This is real," he echoed. "And it’s ours."
We danced until the music stopped, until the guests began to leave, until it was just us under the stars with our baby between us and our whole future ahead.
"Ready to go home?" Axel asked.
I smiled, taking his hand and placing it on my belly one more time. "With you? Always."
