Chapter 39: Training and monologue

Varen frowned when he heard Lin’s questions. He thought for a moment, then replied:

"There are rewards in the academy for completing tasks well, as well as meeting certain requirements. But they’re just credits or other items. We don’t give out any Soul Shards or Distorted Items..."

"As for the second question... Yes, the academy will explain the requirements for transitioning to the ranks of Call and Adept, but afterward, you’ll need to join one of the Five Families to get further answers."

Lin nodded — this was about what he expected. He had asked the question to confirm his assumptions and prepare for future events when he would need to learn the requirements for advancing to the ranks of Chosen and Ascended.

He slowly sat down, and Varen asked again:

"Is that all? Has everyone asked what they were curious about?"

A heavy silence followed, confirming that Lin’s question had indeed been the last. Varen sighed in relief and smiled, clapping his hands.

"Since that’s all, you may now go to your dormitories. Since today is the initiation, you’re free to explore the academy and get to know it. Most importantly, within this week, you must make your choice regarding the faculties where you wish to study. If you’ve already decided, then starting tomorrow, find the area belonging to the faculty you’ve chosen and tell the teacher there that you’d like to study under them. They’ll understand everything."

Most of the students nodded, and Varen slowly left the stage. After he left, a loud buzz erupted — many students were discussing the academy and Varen’s words, while others began leaving to explore.

Lin stood from his seat, and together with Egro and Yulan, walked toward the exit — until they saw Silia.

Lin scoffed coldly as he looked at the girl, and in turn, she simply smiled at him and exited the room.

Yulan, who had been watching this, frowned and asked Egro:

"Does Lin know Silia Matrix?"

Egro simply nodded and said:

"Yes. They know each other," he didn’t go into details, knowing Lin disliked people learning about his connection to the Matrix family. Since Yulan didn’t know, it meant Lin didn’t fully trust her yet.

Yulan didn’t push further and just nodded. She knew Lin well enough to say he had many secrets he didn’t want to share. And whatever was going on with Silia was probably one of them. If even Egro didn’t say anything, then she wasn’t ready to know yet.

The three of them left the room and headed toward the dormitories assigned to each student. Reaching the park located between the boys’ and girls’ dorms, the group stopped.

"Will we walk around the academy later?" Yulan asked.

Egro immediately replied:

"I think I’ll just sit inside the dorm and decide which faculty I want to study in. What about you, Lin?"

Lin shook his head.

"I’ll be training. No point wasting time on a tour."

Yulan clearly looked a bit saddened, but still managed a smile and said goodbye:

"Well, then I’ll go explore alone... Alright, I’ll be going now," she turned around and walked away from the park.

Egro waved at her, while Lin was already heading toward the boys’ dormitory.

"Wasn’t she a bit too sad after realizing we’ll be staying in the dorm?" fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

Lin nodded.

"Definitely. After all, we’re the only people she knows here, so her attention toward us is heightened. Plus, she spent two weeks with me in the Magic World, and in some way, she got attached to me. That affects her too."

Egro smirked.

"I get the feeling you didn’t save her out of noble intent. You yourself said she used you, and you didn’t like that... Still, she’s a good girl," he chuckled slightly and walked into the dormitory.

Lin stared grimly at Egro’s back but said nothing. They entered the dorm together and quickly registered their information at the reception. When all was done, they were told their floors and room numbers.

Lin’s room was on the second floor, while Egro’s was on the third. They quickly ascended the stairs — Lin heading to his room, Egro to his.

Standing in front of the door to his dorm room, Lin opened it and stepped inside, quickly inspecting it.

It was fairly small but had everything necessary. The bed was by the wall, and beneath it was a door leading to a bathroom and toilet. Opposite the main door was a large desk with a wardrobe, where Lin could place his belongings — though all he had was a katana. There was also the academy uniform, which all students were required to wear within the academy.

Wasting no time, Lin sat in a lotus position and placed the katana on his lap, beginning to meditate. He stayed that way for about an hour, then stood up, gripping the blade with both hands and starting to swing it:

"One."

Whoosh!

"Two."

Whoosh!

"Three."

Whoosh!

...

After over a hundred swings, Lin grew exhausted and collapsed onto the floor, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. He looked at the katana and once again frowned — it still refused to "accept" him.

"What are you missing? I’m doing everything I can to improve my mastery..."

"Looks like I’ll have to join the melee weapons faculty... Maybe they’ll point out some obvious flaws that I can’t see myself."

Lin made his decision and lay on the floor for another ten minutes before getting up and heading to the shower. When he came out, he checked the time and saw it was now lunchtime.

"Since I have so much time, I’d better focus on developing my combat skills. They were good enough when I fought the wolves, but definitely not enough to fight a hundred at once."

Lin inhaled deeply and exhaled, then assumed a stance. He suddenly punched forward with his right fist.

Whoosh.

He twisted his torso to the right and struck with his left fist.

Whoosh.

He quickly lifted his right leg and spun into a kick!

Whoosh.

Lin continued practicing various combat moves in his small room. At first, the strikes were slow and precise, but he gradually increased speed until he reached a rapid pace!

Whoosh!

His fist instantly sliced through the air and stopped a millimeter from the closet door!

"Hah. Ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha!" Lin laughed heartily.

"How strange... It’s been three years since I left combat... but the body remembers. It remembers very well, even if I haven’t practiced for years."

"That place was hell. They made us fight and use everything to kill people. And if you didn’t kill... you died," Lin sat on the bed and looked at the floor. "So much pain, so much suffering I felt... especially after Zan and John died. I didn’t know what to do. Back then, I decided to kill just to survive. But... I was lost."

"Now, looking at my past self... I’m surprised I came back from that state. Yeah. I still kill, but at least only those who stand in my way, or who want to kill me. But back then, I killed anyone without hesitation, even if they just seemed suspicious to me — I was afraid they’d betray me like Zan..."

"My hands were trained, so I probably remembered them for that reason. Well, now that’ll serve me again — not for survival, but for revenge," Lin stood from the bed and resumed practicing all sorts of combat techniques, many of which would seem "unfair" or "unsuitable" for formal combat.

But Lin didn’t care.

Before, he used everything to survive. Now, he would use everything to avenge!
