I Maxed Out My Luck Stat-Chapter 13: Misunderstanding (Part 2)
"Richard Lamperouge Von Blanc... his Principal Disposition must be High Rank... or maybe even Special Rank. That must be why they have wisely decided not to have any other children, and have chosen to instead focus all their attention and resources on that sole brat."
Maximus was certain of this.
It was the most reasonable conclusion one could arrive at after looking at the facts.
"But... Isn’t that risky?" Emily asked while gasping.
However, her far more knowledgeable master shook his head while chuckling softly.
"Not if they pretend like their child is too worthless and that they are trying to have another child."
"Ohhh..."
"It’s actually wise not to have more children if the first child already has a Special Rank Principal Disposition. Melissa, Karl’s wife, has a Principal Disposition that allows her to see the quality of anything with her eyes. Apparently, she has never been wrong before. So, it makes sense that they already detected the glorious talent of their son from the beginning and chose not to have another child, since it would be a waste of resources and it could lead to much unneeded competition."
"I see... I understand it now."
Maximus continued to chuckle. The more he thought about it, the more he unraveled.
He could see through the Blanc Family now.
"Does this mean they also planned for this arranged marriage? So they also took account of my ambitions." His smile began to turn wry. "Surely, they understand the major disadvantage that they exist in if their child is truly talentless. But if he is actually of Special Rank, like Selica, then there would be no risk of being swallowed whole by us. In fact—"
At this point, the Head of the Noir Family shook.
His eyes bulged.
"C-could it be... Are they after my Noir Household?!" He gasped at the realization. "If both our heirs possess Special Rank Principal Dispositions and they make us underestimate them, then they could get the upper hand down the line. We will do all the work in shielding their heir in the Academy, while they make the perfect plot to betray us. Since Selica’s behavior is also rotten, they can use that against her and cut us off at the appropriate juncture once her use has expired."
Maximus began to bite his fingernails at this point.
’Fuck, I was too hasty!’
He was actually so exasperated by his daughter, Selica, that he wanted to somehow get rid of her.
She was too troublesome.
When she awakened her Principal Disposition, he was actually not too happy.
Two of her older siblings had High Rank Principal Dispositions, and he would have preferred to choose one among them to be his Heir. Although Special Rank was truly a blessing, and it would surely boost his family’s standing, it was wasted on Selica.
High Rank Principal Dispositions were also rather sufficient for the Head of a Noble Household.
Even he possessed a Disposition of this Rank.
Thus, his youngest daughter was a big headache for him, and he was looking for what to do with her when the proposal of the Blanc Family came.
He thought it was a miracle.
A blessing in disguise—one that would alleviate all his troubles.
He could use his daughter as a political tool to suppress the Blanc Family and gain the benefits.
Using her union with the Blanc Family Young Master as a stepping stone, he would slowly consume their family from within, until everything fell under his Noir Household’s influence.
Of course, this plan would be damaged if the Blanc Family had more children.
However, Maximus simply reasoned that he could assassinate them when the time came, especially with the kind of foothold he would have had at that time.
’But what if they already accounted for this?’
He shuddered at the thought.
If they already knew his intentions and were simply hiding their fangs, then he and his entire Household had been dancing in the palm of the Blanc Family all this time.
They would have continued to do so if he hadn’t figured this out.
’Karl... you bastard! I have lost to you yet again, huh?’
Maximus had a sort of inferiority complex to Karl, but he would always deny that it was the case.
A close look at the two of them, however, would reveal this truth.
Due to the nature of their rivaling households and their close age range, the two of them had always been in competition since they were kids.
However, when Maximus awakened a High Rank Principal Disposition, and Karl awakened one in the Special Rank, an unbridgeable gap between them formed.
Maximus tried everything to succeed... to get one over this former rival of his.
But it was of no use.
He simply could not compete with that power.
So he decided—
"If I can’t have it, then I’ll make sure my children do!" With this in mind, Maximus married very early and made sure to have as many children as he possibly could.
The Vampire State only recognized monogamous marriages and heavily penalized adultery.
So Maximus could not have multiple wives.
But how could that stop his ambition?
To make sure he got a variety of women, he would marry and then secretly orchestrate assassinations of his wives. Even if some suspected what was happening, without any evidence, who would dare accuse the Head of Household?
He did this so many times that getting married to this man was synonymous with a death sentence.
But so what?
Even if the women died, his children would be preserved somehow, and he could have as many as possible—each with different talents and potential for growth.
It was rather unfortunate that the assassination of Selica’s mother didn’t go very smoothly, and it ended up affecting the brain development of the girl.
That would explain why she was so psychotic, though blessed with great talent.
’Seeing that the assassinations were getting too unpredictable and I was gathering too much attention, I decided to stop. Since I already have two High Rank Disposition Holders and one Special Rank, I should be satisfied, but...’
Maximus could not help but clench his fist and grit his teeth when he thought of Karl.
The shadow in his heart simply wouldn’t disappear!
"So he wishes to strike my Blanc Household, huh? Very well. Let’s continue this charade..." After calming himself, the Noble Head smiled and relaxed in his chair. "I wonder how much longer he’ll be able to hide his child’s true power... Especially in the Academy."
Emily listened quietly.
Although she had heard certain things she wasn’t supposed to hear, it wasn’t like she could tell anyone about them. Even disregarding her loyalty to her Lord, there was also the fact that she was bound by his Edict—law, which was supplemented by his Principal Disposition.
She could not defy it even if she tried.
"From this moment on, Selica is forbidden from setting foot in the Blanc Estate or seeing the Blanc Family’s Young Master. The engagement will still be on, but we can maintain arrangements from a distance."
"Understood. But what if the Young Lady—"
"She can take up her complaints with me. My decision is final. If she wishes to see him again, she should train properly and await her entry into the Academy."
"Yes, my Lord."
"You are dismissed."
Emily walked out of the throne room while Maximus heaved another sigh.
"Richard Lamperouge Von Blanc... I’ll keep my eyes on you."
