I Reincarnated as the World's Worst Healer-Chapter 85: A Night in a Mansion Full of Assassins (1)
Ebony woke up abruptly with her tongue burning, and with a sudden jolt she jumped up from the floor while shaking her head and sticking her tongue out of her mouth.
"Shit! What the hell did you give me?!" the blonde said, annoyed and in pain.
Lucian barely managed to step aside before the girl rushed straight to the table and grabbed every bowl of soup she could reach.
However, after drinking all the soup that was still left in the other plates, the pain in her tongue didn’t stop, in fact her throat also began to burn intensely.
"That didn’t help at all!..." She turned her head from side to side looking for anything liquid, and her eyes stopped on a vase decorating one corner.
Without thinking, she grabbed it and started drinking the water from the vase directly, an act that left Lucian speechless, his mouth hanging open in shock.
Veronica wanted to stop her, but she didn’t even know where to start, meanwhile Daniel smiled as if everything were perfectly normal.
"Relax, that always happens... The Burning Fruit hits hard, but there’s nothing better to wake up a drunk, well in this case a dwarf," the boy mentioned while holding back a laugh.
Ebony emptied the entire vase, pulled her face away and coughed once before breathing with a little more control, then she turned her gaze toward Daniel.
"You damn brat! You gave me something spicy! You little—"
"But you woke up," the boy interrupted, shrugging. "So technically it worked perfectly."
Ebony was about to answer with something worse, but her eyes fell on Kanary, the blue-haired girl was still unconscious in the chair, breathing weakly.
The blonde’s expression changed instantly, after a long and controlled sigh she took two steps forward, checked her pulse and then touched her patient’s forehead, her mind focused again.
"Alright... She’s still alive, that’s already something." She raised her head and looked at the other three. "Move it, idiots, take her to her room... I’ll come up in a bit once I finish here."
Veronica reacted immediately and approached as if she had been waiting for that order for several anxious thoughts.
"From now on no one in this mansion is trustworthy except us," Ebony added, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. "So nobody moves alone, nobody goes in and nobody goes out."
Lucian and Veronica carefully lifted Kanary, the girl was too still, too light, and that only made Veronica clench her jaw tighter while holding her by the shoulders.
Before following the group, Ebony grabbed Daniel by the shoulder and with a macabre look she gave him a crooked smile.
"You’re not going anywhere, smart boy."
Meanwhile the others carefully climbed the stairs, avoiding shaking the wound too much, Veronica focused only on not tripping while Lucian watched the hallway and the corners as if expecting another attack at any moment.
When they reached the second floor, Veronica opened the door to Kanary’s room and together they placed her on the large bed with light-colored sheets.
The room was spacious, elegant, and far too clean for the night they had just had.
"You really care about this girl... When did you meet her?" the elf asked while watching the wardrobe and every corner of the place, searching for any sign of traps or a hidden assassin.
"That doesn’t matter right now... Ahh... I met her a few years ago, she was a spoiled teenager so I taught her a lesson... Her family was going to execute me, but this stubborn girl convinced them to hire me to train her."
"So she’s your student."
"Student my ass, it was just to save my life... I admit I taught her a couple of things but nothing too big... After all I’m a Tank and she’s a mage."
A sound interrupted the conversation, it was Ebony and Daniel carrying the unconscious assassins over their shoulders.
"Ears, do your thing and tie them with roots, but good roots, alright? When these guys wake up it’ll be time for the interrogation," Ebony said while carrying two men over her shoulder while drinking a glass of milk with her free hand.
Throwing the bodies of their enemies to the floor like old rags, the blonde immediately approached the bed, checked the girl’s breathing again and adjusted her torso better on the pillows, then she placed the glass of milk on a low table and turned to the others.
"Alright, listen up. We need to find the rest of the mansion servants, tie them up, lock them in a room and gag them."
Lucian raised an eyebrow at those words.
"That’s kidnapping, besides we don’t even know if they’re innocent."
Ebony looked at him shamelessly.
"Yeah but we don’t know if they’re guilty either, and it’s still better than having our throats slit while we sleep, so call it whatever you want, but tonight everyone is guilty until proven otherwise, except us of course."
Veronica, who was standing next to the bed, didn’t argue, she simply brushed a strand of blue hair away from Kanary’s face and kept listening, growing more tense with every second.
"Tomorrow we’ll see who was innocent, who wasn’t, and who it’s better to beat first... For now I want them locked up and far away from any weapon (I’d ask you to strip them just in case, but pointy ears wouldn’t allow it...)"
Lucian couldn’t argue against the blonde’s cold logic, so with a whistle he summoned his roots.
{{Forest Magic: Oak Binding}}
Thick and hard roots wrapped around the bodies of the two living assassins, making any movement impossible, even their fingers.
After that Lucian let out a sigh and, taking Daniel with him, left the room to search for the rest of the servants.
At that moment a funeral-like silence took over the place, the cat girl wasn’t ready to see her friend leave, after all she practically owed her life.
"Hey Veronica... ideally you should go look for the spoiled girl’s mother, I don’t know which room is hers but she might be in danger," Ebony said while looking at the cat girl. "Besides I think she deserves to know what’s happening to her daughter."
Veronica shook her head almost before Ebony finished speaking, her gaze darkened, holding secrets she had carried since childhood, but this one in particular hurt every time she looked at her friend.
"I don’t like that idea... Not now..."
Ebony raised an eyebrow immediately after hearing the savage girl’s reply.
"It’s a long story, huh?... Ahhh."
"This mansion belongs to Kanary... She’s been living here alone for years..." Veronica lowered her gaze toward her friend while speaking. "Her mother lives in a house outside the city."
"Kanary told me her fiancé has been staying there while the wedding preparations move forward, because he couldn’t stand her servants who barely know their job... And honestly... I don’t know if I should trust her mother or her fiancé."
Ebony crossed her arms and nodded slowly, the suspicion was ugly, but it made sense, because if someone had placed assassins inside the house right before the wedding, that was too much of a coincidence.
"Then we’re alone," the blonde said before scratching her head. "Not many options, we wait until this spoiled brat wakes up and until then we control everything we can inside the mansion."
However, at that moment the tied assassins woke from their stupor, so Ebony approached them with rage ready to explode, a smile on her face.
"Perfect, get ready for torture."
"What? I thought you ask questions first and only torture us if we don’t answer?" asked one of the assassins, a young man around twenty.
"Nope. What if you tell me the truth right away? Where would the fun be?" Ebony said with a perverse smile.
