Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Grace Winslow, I Like You

"Ethan Grant, let’s turn back. You need to call a friend of yours and ask him for a favor." Grace grabbed Ethan Grant’s hand.

Ethan Grant looked down, his gaze falling on her hand. The corner of his mouth lifted into a slight smile. "What is it?"

As he spoke, he looked up and gave the driver a meaningful glance.

The driver immediately understood and silently turned the car around.

"Send someone to check on the Dunn family. I’m worried someone might try to harm them."

Grace said urgently.

After all, Jason Dunn was a hero who dedicated his life to our country. Whether he was alive or dead, she couldn’t just stand by and watch something happen to his family.

’It would be for the best if I’m wrong. But if I’m right, preventing a tragedy would be a good thing.’

Ethan Grant was a sharp man. Even though Grace hadn’t explained everything clearly, it only took him a moment to put the pieces together.

His expression immediately turned serious.

When they arrived at the post office, Ethan Grant went to call his friend and explain the situation in detail.

His friend had some influence in Keldon. After all, Ethan Grant himself held a high position; the friends he kept were hardly going to be simple folk.

By the time everything was arranged, it was already very late.

Grace led Ethan Grant back to her home.

Oscar Osborne and Francis Aldridge had already left.

Grace found Gregory Winslow and asked about Frank Dunn’s situation. She learned only that Francis Aldridge had taken him home.

As for the younger brother and sister he had mentioned, Francis Aldridge had also sent people to pick them up.

"Those two children are in a truly pitiful state. Who knows how long they’ve been starving. Especially the little girl—she can’t be more than three, and she’s nothing but skin and bones. On top of that, she’s running a high fever."

"The moment Mr. Aldridge saw their condition, he immediately had them sent to the hospital."

"But from the looks of it... I’m afraid it’s touch-and-go. She probably won’t make it."

Gregory Winslow’s heart ached just talking about it.

’Such a young child, having to suffer so much.’

’People will truly sacrifice anything for their own gain.’

Grace frowned. "Didn’t he say there was a brother and a sister? The sister’s condition is that serious... what about the brother?"

"The brother is doing a bit better. He’s five, and while he’s also sick, it’s not as serious. They sent him to the hospital, too."

"What’s this? Why the sudden concern for them? You’re not thinking of adopting them, are you?" Gregory Winslow looked at Grace, a puzzled expression on his face.

Grace shook her head. "No, I was just asking."

"Oh, right. I ran into Chief Grant while I was out taking care of business earlier. I invited him over for dinner, but we got held up. Is there anything left to eat?"

Only then did Gregory Winslow notice Ethan Grant.

He narrowed his eyes, sizing up Ethan Grant from head to toe before speaking. "So, Grant, where do you work?"

"Are your parents still around?"

"Any siblings?"

"Has your family arranged a match for you?"

Gregory Winslow’s barrage of questions left Ethan Grant a little stunned.

Grace, mortified, yanked on Gregory Winslow’s arm and whispered, "Dad, what are you doing? Are you running a background check on him?!"

"He’s the Chief of the Bureau of Commerce. Mr. Osborne and I met him a few times when we were discussing our partnership. He’s a really nice person, so don’t scare him off."

"Oh, so he’s a Chief! A fine young man, so young and accomplished." The more Gregory Winslow looked at Ethan Grant, the more pleased he was.

Grace eyed him suspiciously. "Dad, what are you going on about?"

"Nothing, nothing."

"Dear, go whip up a couple of dishes and bring out a bottle of liquor! Grant and I are going to have a few drinks," Gregory Winslow called into the house with a cheerful laugh.

Irene Lynch came out, wiping her hands. She glanced at Ethan Grant, then turned to Grace with a puzzled look.

Grace went over and pulled her into the kitchen.

In the kitchen, she explained the situation, then said with an exasperated sigh, "Mom, I think Dad’s gotten the wrong idea. He was just running a background check on him out there."

"Your father might not show it, but he’s actually very worried about you getting remarried."

"It’s been over half a year since your divorce from Caleb Forrest, and I haven’t seen you show any interest in dating. You’re not really planning on staying single forever, are you?" Irene Lynch squinted, studying Grace.

Grace held her mother’s hand. "But isn’t my life perfectly fine as it is now?"

"I just got into university. If I get married and have children now, wouldn’t I have to give up my studies all over again?"

"Mom, I’ve thought about this. A woman needs to have her own career. Otherwise, when she marries into her husband’s family, she’ll just be constantly criticized."

"If you’re not financially independent, you can’t stand tall. You have no confidence when you speak."

"Besides, what if I meet someone even better once I get to university?"

"So please, stop worrying about me. And tell Dad to stop worrying too, okay?"

Irene Lynch considered this and had to admit her daughter had a point.

She patted the back of Grace’s hand. "Alright, as long as you know what you’re doing, I won’t say any more."

"Your father and I just want you to be happy, safe, and sound."

Grace hugged Irene Lynch’s arm, swaying it gently.

Irene Lynch smiled with fond exasperation and shook her head. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

She stir-fried a few side dishes and brought them out.

Gregory Winslow and Ethan Grant had already started drinking.

Ethan Grant’s manners were impeccable, a clear sign of a good upbringing. The more Gregory Winslow watched him, the more pleased he became.

Irene Lynch peeked outside, then came back and pulled Grace aside. "So, are you interested in that young man, Grant?"

"I think he’s handsome, he has a good career, and he seems like a gentle person."

"A woman still needs to find a good man to marry. It’s most important to find someone who will treat you kindly."

Grace was exasperated. "Mom, have you already forgotten everything I just told you?"

Irene Lynch sighed. "Don’t always be thinking that you’ll meet someone better down the road. If you do that, you’ll miss out on the good people who are right in front of you. You have to learn to cherish the present."

Grace fell silent.

By the time Gregory Winslow and Ethan Grant had nearly drunk their fill, it was pitch-black outside.

Worried that her father was about to pull Ethan Grant into a sworn brotherhood ceremony, Grace quickly interjected, "Dad, it’s getting really late. Chief Grant needs to get going."

"Chief Grant, I’ll see you out."

With that, she pulled Ethan Grant to his feet and steered him toward the door.

Once they were outside in the cool breeze, Grace finally let out a sigh of relief.

"Um... my dad had a bit too much to drink. He was probably talking nonsense, so please don’t take anything he said to heart."

"I’ll walk you downstairs."

Ethan Grant looked at Grace, his eyes hazy from the alcohol. He subconsciously reached out, but Grace sidestepped his touch before he could make contact.

He stared blankly at Grace for a moment, then gave a slightly resigned smile. "Grace, actually... your dad wasn’t talking nonsense. I really am interested in you."

"You’re a fascinating woman. You’re independent, strong-willed, and you have ideals and ambitions."

"Thanks to you, I’ve made some significant accomplishments this time around. I should be transferred back to Coronet by April or May."

"I hope you’ll give me a chance to pursue you."

Grace was speechless.
