Chapter 144: Chapter 144: The Rise of a Daigou Craze

"Grace, any news on the clothes?" Wendy Quinn asked, approaching Grace in class the next day.

Her gaze swept over Grace’s outfit, a look of admiration on her face.

"I already called back home. I should be able to pick them up from the post office on Sunday. I’ll bring them to you then," Grace replied, looking up from her textbook.

Wendy Quinn’s face immediately lit up with excitement.

’She refused to believe it. With her looks, her family background, and a bit of dressing up, how could Archer Rhys not be captivated?’

Grace, unaware of Wendy’s ulterior motives, saw that she had gone quiet and returned to her notes.

There was so much she wanted to learn. In this life, she wished she could split every minute into three, just to make up for all the time she had lost.

Wendy Quinn had been about to say something else, but seeing how hard Grace was working, she lost the inclination.

When she returned to her seat, Josephine Joss leaned over. "Wendy, what were you talking to Grace about? Since when are you two so close?"

"It was nothing. I just noticed she has a good sense of style, so I asked where she buys her clothes. She said she could have someone buy them and mail them to me." Wendy Quinn’s mind was filled with visions of winning over Archer Rhys, and she couldn’t hide the smile on her face.

The color drained from Josephine Joss’s face for a moment. Then, feigning casualness, she said, "What? You’re having her arrange to buy them for you? Who knows what the markup is? You’re not letting her rip you off, are you?"

Wendy Quinn scoffed. "I’m not an idiot. I have a rough idea of how much the clothes should cost. I gave her three hundred yuan. If I don’t get at least four or five pieces out of it, then she obviously skimmed my money, and I won’t let her get away with it."

For some reason, Josephine Joss breathed a sigh of relief.

She and Wendy Quinn were close, and she always managed to get some perks out of the friendship.

If Wendy and Grace became good friends, where would that leave her?

She couldn’t let that happen.

Thankfully, from the way Wendy was acting, she didn’t seem to think much of Grace at all.

That put her at ease.

After a ten-minute break, Grace launched into another busy day.

Her schedule was packed, and she spent all her free time making various notes.

Back in the dorm, her desk had the most books, stacked into a small mountain.

Even on her walk back to the dorm after class, she’d listen to tapes to memorize vocabulary.

Her efforts yielded gratifying results.

She was improving at an astonishing rate.

Savoring the feeling of acquiring new knowledge every day, Grace felt fulfilled and happy.

She didn’t have to revolve her life around a man. There were no endless chores, no child she wished she could shove back in her womb, no betrayal, and no hurt.

Every minute, every second, was entirely her own.

She was so busy she didn’t even notice time passing. Before she knew it, it was Saturday.

Students were trickling out of the classroom in twos and threes.

Grace finally stood up and began to pack her things, ready to head home.

"Grace Winslow, could you come here for a moment?" The department head called out to her just as she was leaving the classroom.

Grace glanced around. She was the only Grace Winslow there, so she walked over, a confused look on her face.

"Sir, were you looking for me?"

Peter Payne looked Grace over before speaking. "Here’s the thing. The department has a special learning opportunity, and your professor recommended you. I wanted to see if you’re interested."

"If you are, we’ll be going to the Sovereign next week. A group of foreign investors will be visiting, and for you freshmen, it’s a chance to broaden your horizons, observe, and see how people conduct discussions."

"It’s a rare opportunity. If you want to go, I’ll put your name down."

Grace’s eyes lit up. "Really? Thank you, sir! I’d love to go!"

’An opportunity like this comes once in a lifetime. Of course she wouldn’t pass it up!’

"Alright. In the meantime, you should work with your professor to brush up on your fundamentals, so you don’t find yourself unable to follow along," Peter Payne said with a smile and a nod.

He’d already heard about Grace, the foreign language department’s resident overachiever. Now, seeing her in person, he could tell she was indeed a hardworking and ambitious student.

Grace was smiling all the way to the gate after receiving the good news.

When she got home and told Irene Lynch the good news, Irene made two extra dishes for dinner to celebrate.

Early Sunday morning, Grace made a trip to the post office.

Sure enough, the clothes Hayley had sent were there—a huge, full package.

Just as Grace was wondering how she would get it home, she heard a car horn.

She looked up and saw Archer Rhys sitting in his car.

Archer Rhys’s eyes fell on the large package beside her. He opened his door and got out.

"Need help?"

He asked, but didn’t wait for an answer, easily hoisting the package. "I’ll give you a ride. I have some business in the area anyway."

After a moment’s thought, Grace nodded and agreed.

Archer Rhys’s car was a military jeep. It wasn’t the most comfortable ride, but Grace found she quite liked it.

When they got to her house, Archer even helped carry the package inside.

He glanced around the house, a little surprised.

’The place is well-kept.’

The yard had been replanted with flowers and plants, with a few vegetable patches added in a way that didn’t look out of place at all.

When Irene Lynch came out and saw Archer Rhys, she shot Grace a knowing glance.

’She knew her mother was getting the wrong idea again.’

She didn’t know how to explain, so she simply kept quiet.

"Archer, you’re here! Why don’t you stay for dinner?" Irene Lynch said, beaming at Archer. She looked like a mother-in-law sizing up a prospective son-in-law, growing more pleased by the second.

Grace shot her an exasperated look. Just as she was about to intervene, Archer spoke up. "Auntie, I can’t stay for dinner today. I was in a rush and didn’t have time to bring a gift for you and Uncle. I’ll pay a proper visit next time."

"I have to run, I’ve got something else to take care of."

Irene Lynch looked disappointed to hear that.

Grace walked Archer to the door and watched as he, instead of driving off, started walking down the street.

The direction he was heading looked a little familiar.

The moment she stepped back inside, Irene Lynch grabbed her, ready to start talking about marriage again. Grace quickly made an excuse and fled, not even staying for dinner.

Grace picked out three coordinated outfits from the clothes Hayley had sent, then headed straight for the university.

She had no idea at the time, but helping Wendy Quinn buy clothes was about to spark a personal shopping craze at Crestwood University.

Wendy Quinn arrived early on Sunday, hoping to catch the woman who was trying to seduce Archer Rhys. She didn’t find her target, but she did see Grace carrying a large bag.

She lit up instantly and ran over, her face full of excitement. "Grace! Don’t tell me those are the clothes for me!"

"Wendy, yes. Perfect timing. You can just take them now." Grace was a little surprised, but since she’d run into her, she handed the bag over.

Wendy Quinn took the bag and skipped back to her dorm, overjoyed.

Back in her dorm, she opened the bag and was absolutely thrilled with what she saw. She even felt like she’d gotten an incredible bargain for such stylish clothes.

The very next day, Wendy wore one of her new outfits to class to show it off, and she was immediately swarmed by people asking where she’d bought her clothes.

When Grace went to the cafeteria for lunch, she was surrounded. She thought she was about to be bullied—even in the seventies, it seemed—but when they opened their mouths, she realized they were all just asking her to help them buy clothes too.
