Chapter 29 - Blushing Like An Idiot

"V-Verena, are you okay?" Beatrice asked, fidgeting nervously.

"Why? Surprised I live up to the rumors?" Verena raised a brow over the rim of her teacup.

"Not really... I know you're kind."

Verena sighed and set her tea down.

As much as she wanted to hate this girl, even though there were glaring red flags waving around her like battle banners, there was the fact that she was going to be her love target in the future.

Additionally, no one deserved to be treated the way she had been.

Though, her being an asshole wasn't excuseable either. The male leads deserved a break.

Reaching out, Verena slipped off Beatrice's glasses.

"You're really pretty, you know that?" she said, twirling the frames between her fingers.

If no one else was going to fix this girl's self-esteem, then as always, she'd do it herself. There would be no mind games or cryptic riddles.

The world was already frustrating enough, and Verena had zero patience for people who weren't clear with their intentions.

"W-What?!" Beatrice's face flushed a deep crimson. "Y-You're lying... I'm ugly compared to you, Lady Verena."

Verena clicked her tongue in irritation.

"That's not how you talk to yourself," She flicked Beatrice lightly on the forehead. "You're beautiful. And not just in some generic, meaningless way... you light up when you talk about things you love. When you get lost in your books, when you explain something with so much passion that you forget to breathe."

That was totally not something she noticed whenever she was around Beatrice. Totally not. Nope. Not even a little.

Verena forcefully convinced herself of this fact, but the embarrassment of her own words made her want to crawl into a hole and never return.

She groaned internally, then physically turned away in disgust - not at Beatrice, but at herself.

"Y-Yeah, s-so, that's it!" she huffed, crossing her arms like a defensive cat.

"Why aren't you looking at me anymore?"

"I saw a fly," she blurted out without hesitation, avoiding eye contact like it was a cursed artifact.

"A... fly?"

"Yes. Horrible creature. I hate them."

In reality, Verena's face was burning hotter than a dying star.

She prided herself on being an advocate for emotional intelligence, yet here she was, flailing like an idiot at the first sign of genuine care.

It felt alien caring for someone she was supposed to hate.

"A-Anyway," Verena coughed, desperate to change the subject. She squared her shoulders and turned back to Beatrice. "It worked."

"What worked?"

"I was able to tap into my power. I saw... threads everywhere."

"Oh! The Zodiac Threads?!"

Thank the stars.

Verena exhaled in relief. At least Beatrice had moved on from that moment. Just mention anything nerdy and it's sure to pull her attention.

For the rest of the night, they buried themselves in books, flipping through pages, testing theories, and analyzing every little detail.

Verena continued to tap into her power, gradually strengthening her connection with the Zodiac Weave.

Maybe it was because of everything that had happened earlier.

The emotions, the vulnerability, but for the first time, she felt like she was truly part of this world.
