Chapter 86: The First Snow of the Season

As the weather grew colder, Eric finally welcomed the first snow of the season in this world.

Small snowflakes drifted down from the sky, turning the entire ground into a vast expanse of white. The roof of every house in the Thomas tribe was capped with a pure white cone.

Though the snowfall was light, it lasted for an entire night. It wasn’t until the next day that the sun broke through, revealing a thick layer of accumulated snow on the ground.

Both the Snow Wolf children and the Dwarf children were ecstatic, each one of them jumping into the snowdrifts to roll around.

Eric couldn’t resist either, transforming into a small, silver-white wolf, tumbling everywhere in the snow, becoming one with the white landscape.

The Dwarf children didn’t have a thick coat of fur. They wore bulky cotton-padded clothes, their necks and heads wrapped in animal skins, and played by throwing snowballs at each other. Their gloves were also made from animal hide, without separate fingers like the ones Eric used to wear, making their movements look very clumsy.

Eric suddenly remembered the woolen gloves of his past, and from that, he thought of a material he had completely overlooked: sheep’s wool—something that was practically available everywhere in this beastman world!

Not just sheep’s wool, but the fur of gray rabbits was also long and soft, and the fur of several other animals could be used as well. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

To avoid affecting the value of the animal hides, he could use the fur of low and mid-level magical beasts; the warming effect would be the same.

How could I have forgotten something so important! Eric wanted to slap himself on the head.

With a "whoosh," he burst out of a snowdrift. Ignoring the surprised stares of the other children, he tucked his legs in and bolted straight for home.

With the snow, the people of the tribe had more free time, officially beginning their life of "winter hibernation." Eric had been playing with the children at the edge of the tribe, so he passed through the central area on his way home.

Seeing his hurried state, the Snow Wolf people all cast curious glances his way.

There were still many leftover gray rabbit hides in his house. This type of rabbit was indeed a long-haired variety. Eric burst into his home, pulled out a rabbit hide, and used scissors to shear off the long fur.

Thank goodness for the Dwarves. If it weren’t for them, Eric would have had to forge his own scissors.

He had seen pet bloggers use cat and dog fur to spin into yarn for crafts, and it didn’t seem too difficult. He had even succeeded in making a down comforter; what else could possibly challenge him?

Just as he was feeling smug, Eric soaked the rabbit fur in a basin of water, only to realize he still needed a carding comb with metal tines to brush out the fur before it could be spun into yarn. It was true that one shouldn’t get complacent; the moment you do, reality slaps you in the face.

For anything related to iron and steel, seeking out the Dwarves was always the right move. There was no longer a need to fumble around on his own as before. Thomas’s decision to keep the Dwarves was truly a wise one.

Robin was playing in the snow outside, Iris was busy at the communal kitchen, so Luban was home alone. With some free time these past few days and no interest in forging new weapons, he was at home, bored to the point of picking at his toenails when Eric arrived.

Seeing Eric, he greeted him enthusiastically.

"This heated platform is really comfortable in the winter! Just can’t burn too many black stones. The other day, Bruno’s house made the fire too big, smoked the floorboards underneath, and nearly roasted himself alive, ha ha ha!" Luban laughed heartlessly.

The Dwarves’ houses were all clustered together, similar to human settlements, not spread far apart for ease of movement like the Snow Wolf people’s. Bruno and Luban were neighbors and also good friends; despite a slight age difference, their personalities were very compatible.

At that moment, Bruno heard the noise and came over angrily: "You’ve been laughing at me for three days! Do you believe I’ll challenge you to a duel?"

Luban laughed even harder: "With that tiny bit of low-level Origin Energy of yours, you dare challenge someone to a duel? Watch out for your teeth."

"You’re not that much better than me. If you weren’t a little older, you might not even be my equal. Come on, come on!" Bruno retorted, unconvinced, swinging his large hammer.

Unable to stand this kind of affectionate interaction between the Dwarves, Eric quickly shouted: "Hey, you two can fight later! Luban, quickly make me a carding comb, I need it urgently!"

Luban and Bruno were really just joking around. The Dwarves’ way of bonding was just that rustic and... noisy.

Seeing that Eric was indeed in a hurry, Luban, who had come to understand the young man quite well, knew he must have proper business and pushed Bruno aside.

Eric described the shape of the carding comb to him, then squatted down to draw it on the ground for him to see.

The one he needed was definitely larger than the ones used by those pet bloggers. But this wasn’t difficult. Bruno, curious, also leaned in to listen. Understanding the general shape, he got up, grabbed a wooden plank and some iron nails, and after a series of clangs and bangs, he quickly finished making one.

It was the first time Eric had needed such a small, technically simple item, and Bruno found it a bit boring. He thought the comb was for grooming the beast forms of the Snow Wolf people.

Nevertheless, he dutifully made several more for Eric, including a large one. He had seen the size of an adult Snow Wolf’s beast form; when Eric grew up, he certainly wouldn’t be able to use such a small one.

He was truly thoughtful, completely unaware that he had guessed its purpose wrong.

But these finished products made Eric very happy. He thanked them cheerfully. Before he left, Luban also gave him a meat cleaver specially forged for the Snow Wolf people, with a blade wider than a normal cleaver.

An item made by the Dwarves, even if it was just a meat cleaver, had its own unique charm. Eric held it up; under the sunlight, mysterious patterns from a thousand forgings crawled across the body of the blade.

Why does it look to be of a higher grade than the intermediate-level greatsword Luban has on display over there? Eric looked at Luban with suspicion.

Smugly stroking the iron ring on his beard, Luban explained: "I used a special forging method to create this knife. It wouldn’t be a problem even for a swordsman to use it as a weapon."

If these words came from the mouth of a Dwarf, this weapon would not be cheap in the human world. When he said a swordsman could use it, that meant even the great swordsmasters of the human race would fight over it. Weapons made by Dwarves could help one exert greater power in battle; their grade in the human world was even higher than those custom-made within their own race.

Wow, so the meat cleaver in his hand was a high-grade, superior weapon? If he used this knife for cooking and was seen by humans, they would probably cry.

He thought Luban might have forgotten after sobering up, but he never expected him to forge such a top-quality meat cleaver for him.

The more he looked at it, the more he liked it. Eric lifted it and swung it through the air.

"By the way, Luban, what exactly is Origin Energy? Can’t we beastmen cultivate it?"

Hearing his question, Luban chuckled and replied: "Origin Energy, Spiritual Power, and Magical Power... We Dwarves don’t understand the other two very well. We only cultivate Origin Energy to aid in our forging. I’ve never heard of any beastman cultivating Origin Energy."

Thinking of something, he and Bruno exchanged a look, and their expressions turned a little somber.

"In the past, there was a highly talented senior, nearly on par with the Sword Saints of the human race. Unfortunately, to lead us away from the human continent, he and the other high-level warriors sacrificed their lives to hold back the enemy, otherwise we would never have been able to escape to this place."
