I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal-Chapter 50: Adam
With a look of bewilderment on her face, Sophia’s mother gazed at her daughter. Sophia found significance in the name Adam. It was an urgent sign.
"You know him?" she inquired, her voice still trembling from the horror she had just experienced. "That boy? He rescued me from some men outside."
Sophia’s concern only grew when other men were brought up. Her anxiety increased. "Is he Alright? He is where? You did not leave him alone, did you, Mom?"
A voice broke the tension before her mother could come up with a response. It came from the direction of the kitchen at the end of the hall.
"You’re all making too much noise."
Adam emerged from the darkness. His face was an unreadable mask, and he appeared totally composed. The violent struggle he had just been through was nowhere to be seen. He casually pointed his pistol at the ground, which was incredibly unnerving. He was a young man with a weapon of war, and he appeared totally comfortable.
"Someone will hear you" he continued his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Come help me before they do."
He did not wait for their response. He just turned and walked away from them, back toward the kitchen. More disturbing than any threat was his total indifference to their shock. He thought they would follow.
For a brief moment, Sophia, her mother, and Anastasia stood motionless in the hallway. They exchanged wide-eyed looks and spoke in silence about their mutual fear and incredulity. What was going on? This boy was who? The first to move was Sophia. She must have known. She moved forward hesitantly at first, then again. Attracted by an unseen current of fear and morbid curiosity, her mother and Anastasia trailed closely behind.
Their footsteps reverberated in the strange silence of the house as they moved down the hallway. They came to a complete halt at the kitchen doorway. It was a scene straight out of a nightmare.
There were three corpses on the ground. They wore masks over their faces and were dressed in black tactical gear. From beneath them, dark pools of blood were forming, leaving the white linoleum floor deeply crimson. Its coppery odor filled the air. It was a slaughterhouse in the kitchen.
Together, the three of them let out a gasp. Sophia’s mother suppressed a scream by putting a hand to her mouth. With her tiny body quivering, Anastasia hid behind her mother’s legs. Sophia’s gaze shifted from the corpses on the ground to Adam.
He was standing quietly by the counter, using a dish towel to clean his pistol.
Sophia discovered her voice. It was a faint, broken murmur. With her gaze fixed on Adam, she questioned, "Who... who are they?" The cold knot in her stomach was fear.
Adam stopped working. He sighed quietly, a sound of utter fatigue and annoyance. He detested this section. The queries. The justifications.
The falsehoods. He was aware that he could not be honest with them. He was unable to claim that these men supported him. He was unable to explain the never-ending cycles of violence and death or the bounty on his head. They would never comprehend. He could not let them do the one thing.
The police would be called. All of them would suffer greatly as a result. It would prevent him from protecting them.
He gave Sophia a look. Her eyes were wide with a mix of horror and a desperate search for answers, and her face was pale. He needed to give her something.
He stated in a steady voice, "They are professional assassins....And they came here to murder everyone in this house."
The words were cold and heavy in the air. Sophia’s mother stumbled to her feet. She repeated the poisonous words, "Professional assassins?...But why? We haven’t done anything. We don’t have any enemies."
From behind her mother, Anastasia let out a whine. She had woken up to an impossible reality that was difficult for her young mind to comprehend. Outside her room, she had discovered an odd boy...Men had come to kill her family, she was now being told. It was a real-life monster tale.
Adam inhaled deeply. He had no time for this. Outside, the sky was already starting to lighten.
"I don’t have time for a lot of questions" he said his voice taking on a hard edge. "The sun will be up soon. I need to get rid of these bodies. Help me."
They were stunned into silence by his request because it was so ridiculous and so far beyond their normal understanding. As a young boy, he asked a family for assistance in getting rid of three corpses.
The first person to regain her voice was Sophia’s mother. In her eyes, a glimmer of maternal fire flared. She moved to stand between Adam and her daughters.
"No" she said her voice firm despite her trembling hands. "What are you talking about? This is insane. We have to call the police."
Adam did not want to hear it at all. His jaw twitched a muscle. A wave of unadulterated annoyance swept through him. To keep them safe, he had murdered three professional murderers. He had made it through a house that was a death trap. And now, with a single phone call, the very people he was attempting to save were going to ruin everything.
He had been staring at the corpses on the ground. He raised his head now. He turned to face Sophia’s mom. He had hard, cold eyes. His face had lost all of its warmth and youth. It was replaced by a look of deep and dangerous rage and a chilling emptiness.
