Chapter 54: Instructions

For a few seconds, Adam froze. His thoughts were racing as he gazed at Anastasia. Her question was like an arrow with a sharp point that had penetrated his armor.

Did the assassins target him exclusively? The answer was straightforward: yes.

However, the consequences were much more Complex. He was unable to inform her of that. Knowing that his mere presence was a death magnet was too much for him to handle for a child.

He averted his gaze from her, breaking eye contact. He returned to his work, wiping down a previously cleaned area of the floor. In the hopes that the silence would be his response, he completely ignored her question.

He had an idea while he was working. Anastasia, this young teenager, was more intelligent than both her mother and sister put together. Sophia was motivated by feelings. She was afraid of her mother.

Anastasia was unique. She was perceptive. She made sense. She posed a threat.

He completed his task. He had searched the hallway and the kitchen. He had eliminated all traces of the struggle, including the blood particles. He helped greatly from his understanding of crime scenes, which he had picked up from dead police officer.

He was skilled at erasing proof. He was skilled at making it appear as though nothing had occurred.

He went to the room where he had sent them after finishing. The store was silent and dimly lit. On an old sofa, he discovered the three of them huddled together. The room was quiet depressing because the shutters were closed.

Sophia’s and her mother’s faces were marked with anxiety and fear. In a single morning, they appeared to have aged ten years. The only person who appeared composed and thoughtful as she watched him come in was Anastasia.

When they heard him enter, they all turned. Sophia’s mother got to her feet right away. In a show of profound respect and embarrassment, she bowed her head slightly.

"Adam," as "She apologized in a voice that was hardly audible above a whisper. "I was mistaken about you. I did not understand." She inhaled as though she had more to say.

Adam, however, interrupted her. He signaled her to stop with a raised hand.

He said in a polite but firm tone, "You do not need to say anything." ,"Well, I do not have to listen to it. However, you must listen to what I have to say. Sophia, in particular."

He fixed his unwavering gaze on her. "You should forget about what happened today. Simply deleting it from your memory will benefit your future. You pretend you do not know anything if someone asks you about it. You did not see anything. Nothing was heard by you."

He spoke in a very serious tone. This was not a recommendation. It was an order. They were learning from him how to live in his world. Then, his tone softened and his expression changed from stern to courteous.

"And I appreciate you providing me with a place to spend the night." Similar to the gesture her mother had just given him, he bowed his head slightly. It served as a formal expression of gratitude.

He turned back to Sophia. " But I can not count on you to help me out like this again. I am going to leave now."

There was no mistaking the finality in his voice. When Sophia’s mother heard it, her heart fell. She believed that the trouble they had caused him was the reason he was leaving. She believed he was upset that he had caused such a violent altercation in their house. To tell him he could stay, she opened her mouth in protest.

Before she could say anything else, Adam spoke again. "Everyone, please act normally. Your faces show everything. Something is wrong, and it is written all over you. It will be detrimental to me if someone notices that and learns about this. However, it will be worse for your kids."

His words were a well-chosen psychologically move. He was aiming for two people. Sophia’s mother was the first. He was aware of her intense protectiveness toward her daughters. The strongest leverage he possessed was the danger to their safety.

She understood as soon as he brought up her kids. She could see that he was speaking with a cold, hard sense. She wanted to protest, but it died in her throat. He was correct. Nothing mattered more to her than the safety of her daughters.

Sophia herself was his second target. He was placing her in a delicate position by making it apparent that her behavior and feelings might jeopardize her own family. He was making her be quiet, strong, and normal.

Although it was cruel, he justified it as necessary cruelty. Weakness was a death sentence in his world. He was also committed to keeping her alive. Her family had just been saved by him. He was now instructing them on self-rescue.

He is aware that the most vulnerable is Sophia is physically and mentally weaker than her mother in this family.

and for that reason, he had to be extremely harsh with Sophia in order to prepare her for the unforeseen circumstance that was about to happen. Adam did not like his own behavior, but he was powerless to stop it.
