I Was a Loner, but My Class Got Summoned to Another World…-Chapter 499: Five Thousand Strong
Logan walked slowly toward the training fields outside the capital, while he was physically doing better, he wanted to inspect his town and how it was now doing after hearing how thousands had come to his kingdom to live.
His core still needed to recover, so sadly he couldn't use his mana made wings.
But that did not stop him from enjoying the late morning sun that bathed the grounds in warm light.
In the distance, he could see the glinting off rows of steel helms and polished armor. From where he was standing, he could already make out the sound of orders being given, weapons clashing in practice duels, and boots stamping in rhythm to the steady drumbeat and horns that were playing an anthem made by Marie and Alma for their new kingdom.
By now he felt that it wasn't just his own kingdom but that of all those that help create it as it was now. Filled with endless fields, the best technology, the most advanced buildings, and greatest smiths.
The training field stretched wide after removing the creatures shelters as they were transferred out of the city's walls.
Logan could see a sea of five thousand men and women; each divided into different formations.
Infantry drilled in the center creating close blocks of people that kept them together, their shields interlocking as wooden projectiles slammed against them. Next to them was the pikeman, they consisted of a dozen rows filled with soldiers who held on to long spears, precise thrusts stabbing the air in unison.
The coordination wasn't perfect, but it was worlds apart from the ragged bands of survivors that had first come here seeking shelter.
To one far side, knights sparred with mounted troops. One could tell instantly they were Warks by their hulking figures on top of wolfish beasts,
These were snapping and charged on command, their riders guiding them through various obstacles.
To the other side the goblin shock troops darted between them, their smaller frames quick and unpredictable, yet perfectly in sync. Logan was glad he could see humans and monsters side by side, not just tolerating each other, but learning to fight as one.
Logan paused at the edge of the grounds, watching with a quiet awe he even tried to hide to keep his troops from recognizing him.
He recalled that months ago, he had only himself and a handful of tamed creatures in these same fields trying to clear that snow out.
Now, he was looking at his own army. Five thousand strong, loyal not by compulsion but by choice, well that and the money he was paying out to anyone who joined.
"Form line! Hold!" Kai's sharp command cut through the noise. He and Chloe moved between the formations, eyes like hawks, trying to spot mistakes and quickly help correct posture of many.
Those that did not want to listen or were wrong were punished with wooden blades when soldiers faltered.
The troops didn't complain though; they reset and tried again, sweat pouring down their faces but determination burning.
Logan's chest tightened, though not from pain. It was pride, something he couldn't understand since he was not close to many of the soldiers yet, only his creatures.
He glanced toward the keep behind him, the capital city already bustling with trade and laughter. Once, he'd wondered if he could protect even a handful of people. Now entire battalions trained in his name to protect his growing city.
After a while Logan began to walk towards the section he needed to speak with.
The soldiers in this part were all goblins each one following their leader who seemed content with just sitting back and giving orders.
As Logan got closer there was not need to speak or even move much, one of his strongest and wisest creatures, Krexa strode forward.
She did not look anything like the small goblin that came here hoping to get away from her family which made her do choirs as a princess.
Now she was a fully armored queen and leader of all goblins in the kingdom. They grew every day as more and more arrive to greet their queen.
Today though Logan just waited for his turn and within minutes Krexa finished what she needed to do and guided him to the tents that held their creatures.
Behind her padded a pack of beasts unlike any he'd yet seen.
They were the Hyena-like animals that Krexa wanted to show Logan. Built with a strong frame, but large and lean.
By their size he could imagen that even four goblins could fit without problems making it a perfect mount for the small creatures.
As for the hyenas they have a their fur seemed to drink the sunlight, patterns shifting as though alive. Glowing yellow eyes fixed on the soldiers, and when the creatures moved, their outlines where almost hidden as they used illusions to protect themselves from Logan's aura.
Several soldiers took an involuntary step back when this happened, since they knew the hyenas were powerful beasts that seldoem . "Darkspawn…" one muttered under his breath.
Another gripped his weapon tighter. "Illusion beasts. Can't trust those things—"
"Silence," Krexa snapped, her tusks flashing as she grinned. "These are Shade Beasts from the deep plains. They stalk in shadows, strike from angles you don't expect.
They are perfect fast-attack mounts. So, we brought the strong ones so that you our lord can take them."
Her eyes glittered as they flicked toward Logan. "Well? Think you're up for it, boss?"
Logan stepped forward slowly, ignoring the ache that lingered in his core. The Shade Beasts snarled in unison, a chorus of guttural laughs that reverberated in the chest. Shadows swirled around them, illusions peeling away until it seemed as though a dozen pairs of glowing eyes surrounded him.
His wrist pulsed. Scarlet's bracelet tightened faintly, her essence lending him strength. They're testing you, she seemed to whisper through the bond.
Logan inhaled, centering himself. "Enough, let's tame them..."
While he could not use mana, he could still manipulate mana from crystals to aid him in the taming.
Suddenly illusions broke apart as the sound of glass breaking resounded.
Logan began to tame them one by one until only the true alpha remained, its massive frame crouched low, lips peeled back in a snarl.
Logan reached out, steady, unflinching, until his palm met the beast's skull. For a long moment, the pack quivered. Then the alpha shuddered, exhaled a rattling laugh-like growl, and lowered its head in submission in from of their new master.
The illusion around them instantly dissolved completely. One by one, the others bowed.
Logan allowed himself a faint smile. "You shall be… Shadefangs," he declared, voice carrying across the field. "From now on, you'll fight alongside Krexa."
The goblin soldiers erupted in murmurs again, this time not of fear, but awe.
Krexa's grin widened as she got closer to the beast. It was the size of a mammoth back on earth.
After the Shadefangs bowed, the murmurs of awe began not only with the goblins but also the humans who still lacked a proper mount.
Logan let Krexa handle the soldiers' questions as he stepped back, he could by now see that Kai and Chloe coming closer to greed him.
Soon they arrived while the crowd still rallied to check on the new mounts.
"You did well," Chloe said softly, though her eyes narrowed as she studied him. "But you're now pale. Are you positive you did not pushing by taming all the creatures at once… I don't want Lisa to think we had something to do with it."
Logan gave a small, humorless smile. "My body and core are fine; I did not even rely on my own mana since I took out mana crystal to supplement my mana. Thanks for worrying about me though you two… sadly every time I even think about channeling, it feels like my veins are on fire."
Kai frowned. "Yeah… it takes time to heal but at least you have both Kryst and Lisa to help you."
Scarlet's bracelet tightened faintly against his wrist, a reassuring squeeze. Logan looked down at the crimson band, the faint glow steady as a heartbeat. "Yeah, I am grateful to both, they are helping to keeping me stable," he murmured. "Though I wish I could fly already its boring walking everywhere..."
On impulse, he unfurled a pair of dark tendrils but stopped himself as soon as he felt the burning pain. It felt like molten needles stabbing through his bloodstream. He winced, cutting the power at once, sweat dampening his brow.
Chloe reached for him, but he raised a hand, steadying himself. "…I'm fine. I just needed to know if I was ready to use magic..." His voice steadied, even as the ache lingered.
Kai's jaw tightened. "And?"
Logan's eyes harden. "Nope, I'm not ready yet. But I can at least feel it will be back to normal in a few days."
