Chapter 142: Kai Clan’s Offensive

With fear and tension coursing through her veins, Feng Ning’s eyes fell on her hand, which was lightly resting on the armrest.

It had started trembling. Seeing this, her heart began racing even harder.

Just at that instant, she felt a hand gently pat her forearm, which made her turn to her left.

Wei Tian’s calm expression appeared in front of her eyes when she did so.

"Miss Ning," Wei Tian said with a pursed smile, "You’re not alone. They’ll need to defeat both of us if they want to claim our Clan’s status.

Just take deep breaths and try to clear your mind. It’s only then that you’ll be able to give your absolute best."

Hearing those comforting words, Feng Ning nodded subtly and tried taking deep breaths consciously.

It seemed to have worked as after ten breaths her tremors were gone, and her heart rate had calmed.

"...Thank you, Brother Wei. I’m glad that you’re here," Feng Ning thanked him with gratitude apparent on her face.

Along with gratefulness, there was something subtle also hidden in her gaze. A layer of fondness with which she had never looked upon anyone until now.

Being the team’s representative, she was forced to maintain a confident expression throughout the matches so far while interacting with others despite the turmoil she was going through in her heart. She kept at it because, for her teammates, she was their pillar of strength.

However, she had been unable to share these worries with anyone at this juncture. Not her little sister, not Yi Chen, not anyone.

Reason being they weren’t in the same Cultivation level as her, and thus she didn’t want to affect their morale by showcasing her vulnerable side.

However, as the matches progressed, she soon found one exception to it. The person who had been sitting next to her.

Whenever someone from their side lost the match, she was always accompanied by Wei Tian in placating the worries of the team members.

In moments when she was unable to motivate her teammates properly, he would jump right in and make up for that, and thus, the morale of their team had remained high despite facing so many hurdles today.

Thanks to Wei Tian’s presence, the weight in her heart had lessened substantially, and even now, when she was about to experience a nervous breakdown, his words helped her overcome it.

"You’re welcome, Miss Ning," Wei Tian responded while lightly removing his hand, which had been resting over Feng Ning’s forearm until now.

The next instant, he said with a reassured smile, "Let’s keep our spirits up till the end, Miss Ning, alright?"

"Y-yes," Feng Ning responded while exhaling another deep breath and the next second focused her attention back towards the stage.

Seeing this, Wei Tian too followed and watched the members of the Kai clan making their way to their stands.

The majority of the audience stood up seeing them, and a series of thunderous cheers engulfed the whole arena.

It was apparent that they all wanted the Kai Clan to win.

A deep, silent exhale passed through Wei Tian’s nose the next instant.

Those eyes, which were filled with confidence momentarily, developed subtle hints of worry.

’I must win. Only then will I be able to fulfil my goal...’

As he reaffirmed himself, the doubts began drifting off his mind.

Meanwhile, Yi Chen, who was sitting just a row ahead of the two of them, was clearly able to hear everything.

’Looks like someone had fallen for someone,’ Yi Chen couldn’t help but smile as he was reminded of Feng Ning’s tone when she talked with Wei Tian, which was much gentler than normal.

’If I were some random main character from the novels, I bet I would most probably be seething in anger upon losing a potential harem member...’

Yi Chen thought with a silent snicker while feeling his engagement ring with his left thumb.

’Too bad I’m not one of them, I’m just a happily married man...though still, why is that bastard so handsome...Life would have been so much simpler if I, too, had an above-average face.’

Yi Chen clicked his tongue bitterly while observing the fighting stage, which was still being readied by the management staff.

The Kai Clan’s members were already in their stands and were also waiting for the stage to get ready.

’Talking about being handsome...I wonder what happened to that hateful bastard?’

Yi Chen suddenly thought with a scrunched forehead as he tried hard to remember.

’Tan Sen, was it?’ Finally remembering his name, he continued with his string of thoughts.

’Is he alright? I never actually saw him in the town after our first meeting that day. Did he leave the town?... whatever, why am I even worrying about someone like him?

With his otherworldly face, he must have won some jade beauty’s favour and would be enjoying a very fulfilling mortal life in her embrace.’

Yi Chen soon shook his thoughts away in irritation and observed the management staff who were proficient in martial techniques from the Earth Element.

There, Qi seeped into the cracks and solidified into the same green jade from which the stadium was constructed.

Slowly and steadily, the previously cracked and broken fighting stage was recovering its previously polished appearance.

’That’s a pretty handy technique,’ Yi Chen thought while observing the staff to pass the time.

Finally, after waiting for almost twenty minutes, the final round was about to begin.

"Time has finally come for the round we have all been waiting for. The round where everything will become clear.

Will the Feng Clan be able to break through all odds and retain their status, or will it be the Kai Clan who will acquire the grand status of a Major Clan?!

Let’s see for ourselves!"

With that said, the Imperial Envoy called out the first defender from the Kai Clan, and the matches soon ensued.

The first match was easily won by the Kai Clan, and it was the same with the second one as well, and the crowd roared in cheers.

However, the cheers flatlined the moment the Third Level Cultivator was defeated by someone who had been forfeiting the majority of the matches until now.

"Great job!" Yi Chen cheered, and so did the rest of the Feng Clan’s members when they saw Qin Yao’s performance.

Qin Yao had been conserving his energy all this while for just this moment, and his patience finally bore fruit!

"You did well!" Feng Min wrapped her arm around Qin Yao’s neck in joy.

His victory had given them the much-needed momentum.

"Ah..." realising what she just did, Feng Min took a few steps back in embarrassment and said, "I’m sorry...I’m all dirty and I-"

Seeing her like this, Qin Yao, whose heart was fluttering with joy with a little mix of adrenaline, said softly, "It’s okay. If it’s you, then I really don’t mind..."

Although his voice was soft, it was clearly heard by not only Feng Min but also the other teammates, who hooted in joy at the development.

’...is this the same guy who could barely talk with her a few months ago?’ Yi Chen muttered with an amused expression.

It was apparent that going through hardships together had brought the two of them closer than ever.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at the Kai Clan’s stands was the complete opposite.

"How the hell were you defeated by someone who had already fought tens of battles?!"

Kai Hu roared at the Third Level cultivator who was helped back to the stands by the management staff.

Although they were sure to win in the end, such a bad performance greatly affected their clan’s face!

Hearing these scoldings, the cultivator could only look down with shame.

The Imperial Envoy soon called for the next cultivator for the Second Attempt.

’Luck won’t side with them again,’ Kai Hu snorted and waited for his cultivators to penetrate through the Feng Clan’s defences.

However, he was up for another surprise.

As luck would have it, the Third Level cultivator from the Kai Clan had to choose Feng Min as his opponent.

He thought that he would be able to overcome her in strength easily since she was a girl.

Little did he know that he would find that the frail-looking girl was strong enough to whoop his being and did exactly that.

While the Feng Clan’s team roared in joy, the atmosphere at the Kai Clan’s plummeted to rock bottom.

"Two continuous failures?! What’s the point of us being granted cultivators by the He clan when I have such pig-like teammates?!"

Kai Hu was about to lash out completely when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Brother Kai Hu, it’s alright," the other party said.

"Brother He Sun..." an apologetic expression formed on his face when he met the other party’s face, "I’m sorry. If not for my-"

"It’s alright, Brother Hu. It’s not like this is going to change the final outcome in any manner. We only have to deal with their two Sixth Level Cultivators, as their remaining two Fifth Level Cultivators are as good as gone.

The two failures just now were nothing but flukes. Brother Hu shouldn’t wear himself down by worrying over them needlessly."

He Sun comforted Kai Hu with his words.

"Brother Sun is right." Kai Hu nodded and took a deep breath to regulate his mind.

It was time for the next match to begin, and it proceeded in the exact same way as He Sun had predicted.

The Kai clan was able to easily sweep past the series of cultivators, and their fifth-level cultivator was currently in the midst of choosing his opponent.

Yi Chen glanced towards his left at the other Fifth Level Cultivator who was tightly clenching a medium-grade spirit stone in his hand. The man was trying his best to recover as much Qi as possible in this short interval.

"You! Come up and face my fists," The Fifth Level Cultivator from the Kai clan grinned and called the other party to the stage the next instant.

"Good luck, Brother Feng Wu! Show him what you got!"

The team members cheered as Feng Wu made his way towards the fighting stage the next instant. His expression was serious, yet a feeling of foreboding rose in his heart.
