Chapter 13: A Hungry Mob

"Bastards! Let us out!"

"Help! Help! We've been kidnapped!"

"What should we do now? Hey, open up already!"

"Look, this isn't funny. Let us–"

What?

Several people turned around, to see a frightening group in black unhurriedly approaching them.

So terrible.

They felt their knees quake and their bodies turn soft.

These men were like towers before them, causing some to even wet themselves.

They soon found themselves dragged off, listening to the annoying bastard from earlier on the TV.

[Don't struggle, my pretties... You've just failed the examinations; and now, your fates are sealed...]

[Oh, and a good morning to you too.]

Bastard!!

The curse festival began, with the dragged-out group finally finding an outlet to pour their frustrations on.

"No! No! You can't do this to us!"

"This is illegal! You are breaking the law!"

"You can't end us like this! Our parents and guardians will never let you go!"

Some girls used their sharp nails to scratch these men, but it was to no avail.

Tears trickled down their faces, not knowing what their fates would be.

No one could describe the pain they had in their hearts.

'I regret it... I should have studied more.'

If there is a next life, they swore to become the best students, the sort society would be proud of.

If they had taken their studies seriously from the start, how could they have been forced into their current predicament?

Bam!

The second secret door was shut; and now, the space was completely vacant, returning with silence.

.

.

Din-Din-Din-Din~

The sounds of people running and breathing loudly echoed across the scene.

Those who successfully made it through didn't hear the screams of those trapped behind.

The thick doors and soundproof barriers stopped them from even thinking about those behind.

At present, they were too concerned with their situation to worry about others.

It doesn't make sense.

The more they ran, the more they noticed the strangeness of these hallways.

Some hallways led to expanded hallways, while others led to narrower ones, and then to expanded ones... again and again.

There were stairways going up, and some going down.

In some instances they would meet forked paths, causing them to split up even more.

Sometimes they met 5 forked paths, and other times 3.

They had to say that there was one peculiar matter that made them vigilant.

In these confusing hallways, they often ran into people wearing the same attire as them—only they hadn't seen these people before.

They people ran in the opposite direction, heading to where they just came from.

Levon and Shugo gave each other tactful stares, observing their surroundings deeply.

Recalling everything he had seen so far, Levon didn't think this was any ordinary maze.

"It shouldn't be." Shugo agreed, looking at the obvious discreet clues on the walls.

If it was a regular maze to confuse them, then he had to say it was way too sloppy.

The 2 didn't say anything else, but their eyes conveyed the same understanding.

In silence, they progressed. However, those running behind them were also curious about their analysis.

Don't think they haven't noticed how calm the 2 are.

These 2, though seemingly lax, gave off terrible auras.

The duo created a space of their own when they were together, making it hard for anyone else to come in.

But that didn't stop them from eavesdropping their conversation.

'So it's a maze, huh?'

The hint made everyone else vigilant.

"Did you hear that? It's a maze."

"Wait, I used to be good at maze games. Ah! Over there... I think I see a clue. We have to take the next left turn, trust me."

Several people regained their confidence, running past Levon and Shugo with complacent smirks.

Hmph!

Who said anything about making these guys their leaders?

Seeing the confidence from those ahead, more and more people sprinted, easily shortening the distance.

'How cute.'

Levon was unfazed by their provocations and delusions.

Looking around, he found obvious sloppy signs around him. But as he said, this was NO ordinary maze.

Some dents in the cave-like walls, boulders, and blades of grass on their paths, were purposefully made to stick out.

This confused the masses into believing whatever theories they came up with on which way they should head.

But Levon and Shugo weren't concerned with these obvious clues.

It's the similar ones that made them squint their eyes deeply.

'If my guess is true, all roads lead to the same place...But—'

Levon paused, darting his gaze at the few scanty 'identical' blades of grass growing from the edge of the path.

'Some roads will take the longest and some take the shortest time to get there.'

"Buddy," Shugo interjected. "Time, that's the real worry."

"Yeah."

All evidence suggested that TIME should be a vital part of the examination.

Should they arrive later than expected it will be game over for them.

Levon and Shugo had long been separated from the other 6.

Reaching another forked path, Levon and Shugo stopped.

All 3 paths were identical, except they had numbers on them from 1 to 3.

There were others running behind them cautiously. These people had chosen to follow them, but later mumbled in annoyance of how long they've been running since following.

Well, in a nutshell, they were dissatisfied.

"We should choose 3." Someone suggested.

"What the hell? Why aren't you two moving? Don't tell me you guys are lost, too!"

"WHAT? They've been lost and clueless this entire time?"

"ASSHOLE! We have been following them for 5 hours now, and they still haven't taken us anywhere. So is it really okay to keep following this pretentious know-it-alls?"

"Dammit, I regret it. I should have followed those guys who said they knew everything about mazes."

"That's right! Who knows if we would have reached the finish point by now? 5 HOURS!... 5 hours of running and jogging isn't 5 minutes."

"Hmph. I think you're just pretending to be knowledgeable. If you ask me, you don't know a Goddamn thing!"

Tired and now hungry again, several people were laced with fury.

If these were medieval times, they would take up their pitchforks and burn the duo to death. Dammit!

They gambled on the wrong people.

They knew they should've followed Book Boy who seemed knowledgeable or even Card Girl.

So what if she is dangerous?

Everyone knows that dangerous people weren't suicidal.

They don't do things they aren't sure of.

With 3 paths staring them in the face, the crowd behind Levon and Shugo grew menacing.

But what did it have to do with Levon?
