Chapter 18: Entrance Examinations - Phase 2

'So close.'

The fatty had beads of sweat covering his face but soon recovered after assessing their current situation.

Well, his body was dangling in the air, while Levon held onto the edge of the floor above them.

Who knew the massive dome-shaped space they were in would open up this way?

Shugo knew a calm head was what was needed now.

As if to make his point—-someone close to them who was anxious to climb back to the top, missed his footing and fell.

It was clear his scrawny arms could not bear the weight.

Ahhhh!!!

His echoing screams were all they heard, accompanied by the image of his flaring figure that grew smaller and darker, the deeper he fell.

The ball on Levon's neck rolled.

Just how deep is his hellhole?

If Levon had to describe the opening he and many now fell into, he would describe it to be similar to a mountain.

The edge of the massive opening he held onto, probably had the smallest circumference. Because from the looks of things, the deeper one descends, the wider the circumference.

Watching the Fatty grab onto the edges, Levon knew he had come back to his sentences.

The moment the fatty was secured, the duo began descending.

AHHHH!

More and more people fell to their deaths.

Levon didn't know how, but he had the feeling that this hole was far deeper than any mountain's.

It looked like an abyss without a bottom.

"How many do you reckon' will make it?"

"Honestly, I'd be surprised if 200 did."

Recalling the ten thousand they saw earlier, Shugo felt this examination really slimmed things down.

What was even more fascinating, was that even more people had failed the first examination, thinning the herd down to 10,000.

So can you imagine just how many were brought in at the very start?

At the start of the second examination, 6/10th of the population was unprepared, falling straight to their dooms.

It seemed that this wasn't the only hole that opened up.

The entire place probably had 20 or even 30 massive openings covering the entire space.

Just how many will survive in the end?

Levon wasn't so curious.

Afterall, in his mind... he would be one of the survivors, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

He approached the exam with confidence, as well as a sense of detachment.

The lollipop in his mouth, swirled and swirled, giving him a state of calm.

.

.

"Shit. These guys are even more dark than I thought. Are they trying to kill us or something?"

"What a bunch of flipping assholes!"

Many people cursed while holding on to the edge.

They didn't know if it was their illusion, but just looking at the hole's growing center made them dizzy.

"Shugo, Levon grabbed onto a rocky piece below him and chuckled," One was whiter than the other."

"You mean the squares?" Shugo thought deeper. "Illusionary disorientation?"

"More or less," Levon agreed. "The wall and floor squares, despite how similar they were... were slightly different shades of white."

After spending time in the dome, one won't even know they have fallen victim';s of illusionary disorientation.

And now, when looking down into the dark abyss, some people begin to see multiples of a single object, while others grow dizzier, thus hastening their fall.

"Clever."

Clever?

What was clever? And you beside him, why are you nodding in understanding?

If Shugo wasn't smart, he wouldn't be able to keep up with Levon... because several others crawling around were so confused they wished to curse.

Different shades of white walls and floor tiles? Are you sure?

How come when they spent hours in there, and could only see everything as white and nothing else?

"A spiral pattern..." Levon continued. "They snuck it everywhere everywhere we looked."

Shugo laughed, having also figured it out. "They used the False spiral illusion."

To think they snuck that old spiral trick on them.

"_" [Everyone else]

"Hey, what the heck is a False spiral?" A burly boy couldn't help getting anxious, especially when they were on the brink of death here.

Shugo didn't mind explaining.

"They're white and black spiral images you find in fun houses. When they see them, they spiral, some perhaps mesmerizing and hypnotizing you."

"So that's it..." Many nodded their heads.

Although not very obvious, the slighter lighter white floorings and walls, all drew out these spiral patterns everywhere they looked.

A girl thinned her lips hesitantly. "And now, we get dizzy because of it?"

"Well, more or less." Shugo shrugged. "We've spent time in space, subconsciously looking at these patterns. That's why when we now look down into the dark abyss, we subconsciously see the white spiral..."

And then, you fall to your death.

Clever, wasn't it?

... Clever THEIR ASS!

Everyone felt cold water dump on their emotions, making them feel desperate.

An arrogant girl moved her quivering lips, staring at Levon intently, "Then... then what should we do now? You obviously know the way to overcome it, don't you?"

"Yes, yes! If you know it, spit it out already!"

It was amusing how fast people's faces changed.

Levon and Shugo looked at each other, unbothered.

My, my, my~... Human feelings sure we're fickle.

So much ingratitude.

A moment ago, they were staring at them gratefully. And now, their eyes burned with viciousness.

Levon shrugged, the corners of his lips raising playfully.

They wanted help? No problem.

But can they really do what is needed now?

"Shugo, we need to move."

"Agreed."

Then right before everyone's eyes, the duo let go.

WHAT?

Everyone watched them fall deeper and deeper into the hole, in a unique way that made their bodies drop closer to the edges and away from the center.

Don't forget that if you call straight down, the distance between you and the edges will only grow bigger and bigger.

Then, he watched Levon grab onto the jagged edges below, looking up to them with a smile that whitened the darkness.

This...

The distance he created between himself and them, wasn't in a sense, huge. However, at this moment it looked as though he had made an incredulous leap.

Shugo was right beside him too.

"Hey, Buddy... we've got to hurry up. We're on the clock. Who knows if this examination requires us to be at the base in an hour?"

Detaching themselves from the walls, the duo once again went deeper, repeating the same actions over and over again.

However, Shugo's words caused a stir in the hearts of many.

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock,

The clock was ticking and their lives were at stake!

Either make it on time and live, or move slowly and still die in the end.

"After them!"

"Follow their lead!"
