Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 132: I’m Getting Married
May Rhodes’s voice was dripping with resentment for Cecilia Nathan.
Hearing this, Cecilia fell silent. It felt like a heavy stone was pressing on her heart.
If she weren’t in Korsyth, she never would have contacted Damian Hawthorne on her own.
Thinking about the current state of Damian Hawthorne’s eyes, Cecilia wanted to say more, but in the end, she just took a deep breath.
"Fine. I’ll figure it out myself."
Just then, Damian Hawthorne took the phone. "Don’t worry. Since I promised you, I’ll help you find him."
"Damian, you—" May Rhodes started to say, but Damian Hawthorne had already hung up.
After hanging up, Cecilia didn’t remain idle.
That call had left her feeling deeply unsettled.
She stared at Linden Nathan’s number on her phone and finally dialed it.
「The Grant Residence.」
Hugo Grant looked at the statements Hayley Shepherd handed him, his calm expression faltering slightly.
"Did you trace the accounts that made the payments?"
"I did. They all belong to the Nathan Family." Hayley Shepherd stared at the transactions, her face a mask of disbelief. "Every single one of these payments was transferred from accounts belonging to the Nathan Family of Aethelgard. If I hadn’t hired a private investigator and a hacker, we never would have traced the source of the funds."
"I can’t believe Cecilia Nathan is actually Selina Nathan."
Hayley Shepherd sighed, a mocking expression on her face. "It’s hilarious when you think about how Frances Bennett spent her whole life sucking up to the powerful, yet she couldn’t even recognize a true diamond in the rough."
Frances Bennett’s disdain for Cecilia was plain for all to see.
Because of Cecilia’s background, Frances Bennett had always felt she wasn’t good enough for Damian Hawthorne.
"I never imagined Cecilia’s background was this powerful." Hugo Grant stared at the statements in his hand, his wrist trembling slightly.
He’d suspected there was more to Cecilia than met the eye. Otherwise, she couldn’t have come up with so much money all at once.
Tens of millions in assets wasn’t something the Cecilia he knew could possibly produce.
"President Grant, make your move!" Hayley Shepherd stared at Hugo Grant, her eyes gleaming. "A rich heiress is right in front of you, just waiting for you to sweep her off her feet! No one else knows her identity right now. Only we do."
"If you can win over Selina Nathan, I can die without any regrets!"
Hayley Shepherd’s solemn vow made Hugo Grant unsure whether to laugh or cry.
His assistant was exceptionally competent, but her personality was rather flighty.
"I want to be with her too, but she already has Miles Sinclair."
"That celebrity?" Hayley Shepherd scoffed. "He’s just a pretty boy. How could he possibly compare to you, President Grant? Don’t sell yourself short. You’re gentle, considerate, and handsome—infinitely better than that Miles Sinclair. If you just make an effort, Cecilia will be yours sooner or later."
"Damian Hawthorne has already given up, and that Miles Sinclair is no good. Right now, you have the best chance."
Hearing that Damian Hawthorne had given up, the depths of Hugo Grant’s dark eyes seemed to darken. "Damian likes Cecilia. He won’t give up."
Knowing Damian’s personality, if he didn’t like Cecilia, he would have given up long ago. He wouldn’t be wasting so much time and energy on her.
"But he’s already found his old flame."
Hayley Shepherd recalled what Justin Bell had told her and sighed softly. "The May Rhodes who disappeared... he actually managed to find her."
Hugo Grant’s eyes lifted slightly. "You’re saying... he found May Rhodes?"
...
「Korsyth First Hospital - Entrance.」
A Bentley pulled to a stop.
People nearby glanced toward the car as Hugo Grant stepped out. He wore a long, black padded coat and sunglasses as he walked toward the hospital.
"Oh my god, he’s so handsome."
Hugo Grant had a melancholic, aloof air about him, but he was tall with deep-set features. Just standing there, he was a sight to behold.
People bustled in and out of the hospital entrance, and Hugo Grant’s figure immediately drew everyone’s attention.
Damian Hawthorne was standing by a window on the fifth floor. When he saw the car below, he frowned slightly.
This model of Bentley was a limited edition with only fifty in the world. There were only a handful in all of Veridia, and in Korsyth, only Hugo Grant owned one.
"Damian, what are you looking at?" May Rhodes, seeing him staring fixedly at something below, craned her neck to look outside.
"We have a visitor."
Not two minutes later, Hugo Grant appeared.
He placed the fruit he was carrying on the table, his profound gaze landing on May Rhodes.
May Rhodes, dressed in a white caregiver’s uniform, saw Hugo Grant and cordially brought him a cup of water.
"Hello, Mr. Grant. I’ve heard Damian mention you."
Hugo Grant took the cup, set it aside, and looked at Damian Hawthorne. "Are you planning to give up on Cecilia?"
He didn’t acknowledge May Rhodes at all.
May Rhodes stood to the side, awkwardly fiddling with the hem of her uniform.
Damian Hawthorne crossed his arms, shot Hugo Grant a sidelong glance, and sat on the edge of the bed. He picked up a string of Buddha Beads and began to rattle them through his fingers.
"Did you come all this way just to ask me that?"
The thought of Cecilia calling him just to ask him to find Finn Hawthorne made the smile on Damian Hawthorne’s face turn even colder. "Hugo Grant, you’re not in her heart. Don’t waste your energy just to pave the way for someone else."
"You don’t need to worry about that," Hugo Grant said, smiling as he looked at the Buddha Beads in Damian’s hand. "If I remember correctly, Cecilia gave you that string of beads, didn’t she? She went to great lengths to collect all of them for you, even asking me where she could buy them."
"Damian, she put a lot of thought into you. Her feelings for you are no less than Ms. Rhodes’s."
Hugo Grant’s voice was chilling, like an autumn wind laced with frost, with a subtle, raspy edge.
"If you don’t love her anymore, you shouldn’t keep stringing her along."
The hand Damian Hawthorne was rolling the beads with froze. His half-lidded eyes snapped open, and a scornful, cold smile touched his lips.
"You’re right. I shouldn’t keep stringing her along."
Damian Hawthorne tossed the beads onto the bed. He lazily draped an arm over May Rhodes’s shoulder and grinned with a roguish air. "I’ve found my Luna, so of course I’m giving up on Cecilia."
"Hugo Grant, if you like her, go after her. I won’t stand in your way anymore."
Hearing this, Hugo Grant paused. He stared intently at Damian Hawthorne, his eyes darkening ominously, like a storm gathering over the city.
"Damian, have you really given up?" Hugo Grant asked again, as if seeking confirmation.
Now, Damian Hawthorne was thoroughly irritated. He clicked his tongue, his face a mask of impatience. "I said I’ve given up! Why are you being so persistent? What do you want from me? To two-time her?"
"She said she liked me, but now that imposter Finn Hawthorne is more important to her than I am. I, Damian Hawthorne, will not be played for a fool, and I certainly won’t be anyone’s doormat."
’She said she’d take care of me, then she disappeared for a whole day.’
’I thought she was calling to ask about my eyes, but the first thing out of her mouth was a demand to find Finn Hawthorne.’
’She was the one who pursued me, and she’s the one who wants to end it.’
’What does she think I am? Just a tool she can use?’
Damian Hawthorne reached out and pulled May Rhodes down to sit beside him. May’s face flushed crimson.
"Oh, right. There was something I forgot to tell you. I’m going to marry Luna."
