Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Jumping into the Pit

Sharon Quincy faltered, clearly panicking.

She hadn’t expected Cecilia Nathan to figure out the deal between her and Walter Wallace so quickly.

"The only reason I signed the forgiveness agreement is that what he did isn’t enough to get him the death penalty. Since he’s not going to die, what if he gets out and comes after me for revenge? It’s easy for you to say—you have nothing to do with him. I have no connections, no one to back me up. If he does something to me, who can I turn to?" Sharon Quincy said defiantly, holding out her prosthetic hand. "I’m already down to one hand. I can’t fight him, and I can’t win an argument against him. Don’t I have the right to think about my own future?"

"We can get him the death penalty." Cecilia Nathan glanced at her hand, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"What?!" Sharon Quincy’s mouth twitched. "Even the law can’t give him the death penalty. What kind of nonsense are you talking?"

"I have evidence that he killed someone," Damian Hawthorne added lightly.

"Wh-what?" Sharon Quincy shuddered, her lips trembling as the color drained from her face. "How can you prove that? Walter Wallace has no murder charges on his record."

"He killed Finn Hawthorne," Cecilia Nathan said, staring at her fixedly. "We have evidence."

A clap of thunder seemed to explode in Sharon Quincy’s ears.

’How could Cecilia Nathan have evidence?’

’No, Cecilia Nathan can’t have any evidence. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have kept trying to force me to reveal Walter Wallace’s crimes.’

’Cecilia Nathan is bluffing!’

At this thought, Sharon Quincy broke into a grin. "What evidence could you possibly have that Walter Wallace killed someone? He didn’t kill anyone... What proof do you have?"

"You told us, of course." Cecilia Nathan’s words made Sharon Quincy’s mind go blank.

"What?" Sharon Quincy didn’t process it at first. Her eyelid twitched violently, and a terrible premonition washed over her.

"You came to the Hawthorne residence as a guest today, and you told us yourself, in our presence. You told us that Walter Wallace killed Finn Hawthorne." Cecilia Nathan’s lips curved into a slight smile. Her voice was light and clear, like the gentle sound of a flowing stream.

"I did not!" Sharon Quincy’s eyes widened.

"You did. You said that Walter Wallace killed Finn Hawthorne," Cecilia Nathan repeated coolly, crossing her arms.

’Fabricating testimony? Two can play at that game.’

She hadn’t wasted her time. She had gone to all this trouble to get Sharon Quincy to the Hawthorne residence precisely for this moment.

As long as Sharon Quincy had stepped through the doors of the Hawthorne residence, she would have a hard time explaining herself to the outside world.

Clearly, Sharon Quincy had also realized the crux of the matter.

’So Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne hadn’t brought her here to force a confession out of her; they had dug a pit for her to fall into.’

"Thank you for telling me the truth today. When I go see Walter Wallace later, I’ll be sure to tell him exactly how you betrayed him," Cecilia Nathan said with a somewhat playful smile.

Sharon Quincy was stunned.

’She never thought Cecilia Nathan could be so despicable.’

She couldn’t see Walter Wallace herself. If Cecilia Nathan said something, there was no guarantee Walter wouldn’t turn around and sell her out.

’But she hadn’t said that at all.’

"Walter Wallace won’t believe you." Sharon Quincy tried hard to remain calm, but her heart was pounding.

Her relationship with Walter Wallace wasn’t that strong. Their so-called "understanding" was only built on occasional contact over the years.

If Cecilia Nathan told Walter Wallace that she had betrayed him, he might actually believe it.

After all, the fact was that she had come to the Hawthorne residence.

And as for what really happened inside the Hawthorne villa, no one else would know.

Sharon Quincy’s mind raced, trying to figure out how to turn the situation around.

"I don’t know anything about Walter Wallace’s business. Don’t even think about framing me. Walter and I are so close; how could I possibly accuse him of murder?" Sharon Quincy straightened her back. "Go ahead and tell him whatever you want. Walter Wallace will never believe you."

After speaking, Sharon Quincy turned to leave. "This is a society ruled by law! If you keep me here, I can have you charged with kidnapping!"

Seeing that Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne didn’t stop her, Sharon Quincy breathed a small sigh of relief.

Her hand had been in her pocket the entire time.

Her phone was in her pocket, recording everything.

’As long as I have this recording, I’ll have proof to defend myself no matter what Cecilia and the others say.’

She wasn’t afraid of others misunderstanding now; she was afraid that Walter Wallace wouldn’t believe she’d keep their secret and would preemptively confess that she had hired him to cause the car crash.

’As long as I have the recording, this trip won’t have been for nothing.’

Just as she was about to walk out the door, Damian Hawthorne’s magnetic voice rang out, "Wait."

Sharon Quincy’s steps faltered, her hand in her pocket tightening its grip on the phone.

Afraid that her recording would be exposed, she didn’t stop, instead walking quickly toward the exit. But Damian Hawthorne didn’t give her the chance.

Damian Hawthorne strode over and directly reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone.

Sharon Quincy tried to snatch it back, but she found that Damian Hawthorne was too fast. He was also tall, and she couldn’t reach it at all.

Damian Hawthorne held the phone, his gaze falling on the screen that showed it was recording. His eyes were deep and dark, like a bottomless pool of ink.

Sharon Quincy’s face turned pale. "Give me back my phone," she said in a panic.

Damian Hawthorne expertly handled the phone, deleting the recording and the file before handing it back to Sharon Quincy. "Miss Quincy, little tricks like this are child’s play to me. Next time you try to record someone, be a bit more clever about it."

Sharon Quincy’s eyes widened, and a chill ran through her.

Her movements had been subtle, and she hadn’t taken the phone out at all. She never imagined Damian Hawthorne would be so perceptive as to realize she was recording.

Sharon Quincy immediately recalled the time she had impersonated "Selina Nathan" to discuss marriage with Damian Hawthorne. Back then, Damian hadn’t seemed to suspect her at all.

’But could such an intelligent man really not have known she was lying?’

At this thought, a chill went through Sharon Quincy’s heart, and her lips went numb with fear.

’She had underestimated Cecilia Nathan’s methods, and she had underestimated Damian Hawthorne’s intelligence.’

Sharon Quincy felt as if she had backed the wrong horse.

"If... if I come forward and testify against Walter Wallace, can you get the court to give me a lighter sentence?"

Compared to Walter Wallace, Sharon Quincy was more terrified of the two people in front of her.

’She knew that even if she could outmaneuver Cecilia Nathan, she could never win against Damian Hawthorne.’

’It would be better to admit defeat early and get a lighter sentence.’

She had looked up her own crimes. Although they were illegal, she figured that if she got a good lawyer and behaved well on the inside, she could get out early.

The precondition was that Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne had to agree to vouch for her.

"Miss Quincy is a good person. Why would she be sentenced by a court?" Cecilia Nathan’s gaze was placid, but she remained completely unmoved. "Don’t worry. A good person like Miss Quincy doesn’t need to worry about going to jail. The law won’t wrong a good person, nor will it let a single bad one go free."

"Whether Miss Quincy is good or bad, time will tell. We can’t give you any promises."

Cecilia Nathan’s voice was like a series of needles, stabbing viciously into Sharon Quincy’s heart.

With a voice as placid as still water, Cecilia Nathan was telling her that she would be given no chance at a reduced sentence.

Sharon Quincy’s heart pounded violently.

’The fact that Cecilia Nathan could say these things today proved that she already had evidence of Walter Wallace’s crimes.’

’Once Walter Wallace receives a heavy sentence, he’ll definitely confess about my involvement to try and get a lighter one.’

’In the end, it was too late.’

’If she had told Cecilia Nathan sooner, would the outcome have been different?’
