Chapter 208: Chapter 208: Double Festival Bonus

This year is quite special as National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival coincide.

The eight-day national holiday... well, Mu Qiu’s profession doesn’t really consider national holidays.

But this is the first October 1st National Day that Mu Qiu and Cheng Zhirang are spending together after their marriage.

In previous holidays, since there wasn’t the Valentine’s Day atmosphere and Cheng Zhirang was busy with script acting, they never really celebrated holidays like National Day.

This year, they got married, and from being lovers, they became family, making Mid-Autumn and National Day feel somewhat different.

Though it’s a pity that Cheng Zhirang has a filming commitment today that he can’t easily get out of, he promised Mu Qiu in the morning that he would come back early to be with her.

He understands her emotions, which can be sensitive at times, but easily soothed. A promise from him makes her feel much better.

The premise is, that the promise comes from him.

...

At eight o’clock, Mu Qiu sees Cheng Zhirang off at the door; he bends down to match her height, letting her adjust his collar.

After finishing, she closes her eyes and receives a gentle kiss.

"I’ll try to come back early tonight, you stay safe at home."

Mu Qiu nods, "Should I wait for you to have dinner together?"

Cheng Zhirang strokes her hair, "I want to come home and eat with you, but if it’s past eight, you should eat first."

Mu Qiu nods again, pointing at the gray tablet on the sofa, "I’ll play with the tablet and wait for you."

"Okay."

After sending Cheng Zhirang off, Mu Qiu goes back to her room to write.

She doesn’t particularly like always being alone with her lover and easily accepts that her lover can’t be with her every day; sometimes keeping a bit of distance makes the relationship easier to maintain.

The small inspiration corner is full of sticky notes. Mu Qiu just glances at it, then heads to her study.

Recently, she prefers writing by hand, though it is much slower, but the quality of what she writes improves.

Especially with tragedies, every ordinary word spills out from the pen, forming a coherent passage that’s painful, expressing emotions strongly, sometimes making her cry as she writes.

Spending a whole day alone at home, by six in the evening, her writing concludes, and Mu Qiu sends a message to Cheng Zhirang.

[How long until you come back?]

[Brother Cheng: Just need a little more time, should be back in half an hour if nothing goes wrong.]

[Should I prepare dinner for you?]

[Brother Cheng: Yes, thank you, my dear wife.]

Every time she’s called ’wife’, there’s a sense of embarrassment, but more so, excitement.

With confirmation, Mu Qiu hums a tune as she goes to the kitchen to cook.

Close to seven, Cheng Zhirang says there was an unexpected delay and he’ll be even later, telling her to eat first.

Mu Qiu doesn’t listen; she packs the cooked dishes into a lunchbox, puts it in the fridge, and when he gets back, it’ll only take a few minutes in the microwave-steam oven.

After doing this, with nothing else to do, she picks up the tablet and starts watching the dramas Cheng Zhirang starred in.

Cheng Zhirang doesn’t get back home until 8:40, walking briskly with long strides whenever walking was needed; Assistant Wen keeps pants behind, almost unable to keep up.

Upon entering, his first glance at the kitchen finds the table clean and devoid of food.

As he changes shoes, he hears a gasping hiccuping sound from the single sofa facing away from the doorway.

Cheng Zhirang doesn’t even change shoes, hurrying over, removing his suit jacket while walking, tossing it aside when reaching the single sofa.

Then, he kneels down on one knee, grasping her shoulders nervously, gently asking, "Why are you crying?"

Mu Qiu is choking with sobs, the drama containing quite an emotional punch, making her cry for almost the entire episode.

So engrossed in crying, she didn’t notice Cheng Zhirang’s return, wanting to speak but only managing to sob, unable to get words out, reaching for a tissue to wipe her tears.

As she doesn’t speak, Cheng Zhirang’s brows furrow deeply, his hands cradling her shoulders move up to her neck, stroking her head, getting closer.

Apologizing softly, gently kissing the corner of her eyes and lips.

"It’s my fault for being late, leaving you alone at home."

"Today’s photographer was off, and after taking the promo shots, the director said they needed to be redone, so I’m late."

"It’s my fault."

"Don’t cry, baby, your eyes are all red."

His voice softens to an incredibly tender tone, inherently charismatic, the kind Mu Qiu is most vulnerable to.

Mu Qiu is a bit dazed by his kisses.

She wants to say she just got overly emotional watching a drama, not actually mad. But recalling the tragic scene where Cheng Zhirang’s character was on the hospital bed, still makes her head whirl.

Sobs are urgent and pitiful, tears continue to flow uncontrollably.

"I, I didn’t..." but just saying those two words makes her sob.

"Alright, alright, take a breath first." Cheng Zhirang stands, sitting on the sofa, pulling her into his embrace, resting her head on his chest.

He looks down at her, using his thumb to gently brush over her eyelashes, "Your eyes are red again, don’t cry, okay?"

"I promised to come back early today, but it’s late now, so I apologize."

Mu Qiu shakes her head against his chest.

Cheng Zhirang gently pats her back, "Made you cook dinner and wait; have you eaten?"

She shakes her head, still sobbing.

"Alright then, we’ll eat together later. The director gifted me two boxes of mooncakes knowing I was coming back; he said they’re delicious, want to try?"

Mu Qiu props her hands up to look at him, her voice still with a sob, now a bit hoarse, "I’m not mad, just got emotional watching a drama."

She gestures to the tablet still playing beside them.

Only then does Cheng Zhirang notice the familiar sound coming from the tablet next to them.

"...My drama?"

Mu Qiu nods, and thinking about the scene where Cheng Zhirang’s character was so miserable again, she feels like crying.

"You, how," paused by a sob, "how could you be so miserable?"

"......" Cheng Zhirang doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

He can’t help but give her another light kiss on her lips, saying, "It’s the director making that character miserable, not me. I’m very happy now."

On a significant day, sitting with his wife at home, having dinner, eating mooncakes, chatting, turning off the lights and going to sleep; that is his greatest happiness.

Mu Qiu looks at him, smiling through tears, leaning forward to kiss him on his lips.

"Happy double festival, hubby."
