Chapter 133: Desires

Damien wanted to argue, to defend his connection with Lyristae. But everything they were saying was objectively accurate.

He was isolating. He was being pursued. He was vulnerable in ways the corruption made him unable to fully recognize.

"What do you want me to do?" he asked.

"Be honest. With us, and with yourself, with what’s actually happening." Seria returned to studying her maps, the conversation apparently concluded from her perspective. "And maybe spend less time alone with the Queen who just happens to be exactly what the corrupted part of you thinks you need."

---

That evening, Damien stood in Lyristae’s private study, reviewing defensive plans. They’d been working together for hours, their shadow magic occasionally brushing against each other as they manipulated tactical diagrams.

"Your companions don’t approve of me," Lyristae observed. It wasn’t a question.

"They’re concerned. About the time we’re spending together, about how it’s affecting my anchor bonds."

"Understandable. If I were them, I’d be concerned too." She set down the documents she’d been reviewing. "Are they right to be concerned?"

"I don’t know. Are they?"

"That depends on what you think is happening between us." Lyristae moved closer, and Damien felt that same pull he’d experienced during the battle. Recognition, understanding, the dangerous comfort of someone who knew his burdens intimately. "I’ve been honest, about finding connection with another shadow wielder meaningful. But I’ve also been quite delibrate about building that connection. So the question is – do you see me as an ally, a friend, or...?"

"I don’t know yet."

"Fair answer." She smiled slightly. "I appreciate honesty over comfortable lies. But Damien, you should know – I’m not going to stop pursuing connection with you. Not because I’m trying to undermine your existing relationships, but because I genuinely value what we’re building. Shadow wielders working together, understanding each other."

"Seria and Elara think you’re manipulating me. Using techniques I’m vulnerable to because of the corruption."

"Who knows, I might be. Not consciously calculating every interaction, but definitely strategic with how I present myself, how I create opportunities for connection." Her honesty was disarming.

Damien couldn’t believe it, he was watching his techniques being flipped on him in real time, and even worse, it was working.

"The question isn’t whether I’m being strategic – it’s whether the strategy serves genuine feeling or just ulterior motive."

"And which is it?"

"Both. I care – about what you’re fighting, who you’re trying to remain despite the corruption, what you’ve accomplished against impossible odds. I also recognize that alliance with you serves my kingdom’s interests, strengthens my position, maybe even helps me manage my own corruption more effectively." She stepped closer. "I’m not going to pretend I’m doing this from pure altruistic emotion. But I’m also not going to pretend the emotion is fake. It’s complicated, planned, and genuine all at once."

Damien should pull back. Maintain the distance Seria and Elara were asking for. Should recognize this for what it was – calculated pursuit designed to create dependency.

Instead, he found himself asking, "What do you want from me, Lyristae?"

"Honestly? I want you to stop fighting this connection like it’s a threat to overcome. I want you to accept that you can have both – your anchors who ground you, and someone who understands the darkness you carry. I want – " She paused, something vulnerable crossing her expression. " – I want you to look at me and see someone worth choosing, not just someone useful for seeing the worst of you."

The admission was raw, genuine in ways that manipulation couldn’t fake.

"I do see that," Damien said quietly. "Which is exactly what makes this complicated."

"Then be complicated. Stop trying to categorize everything as calculated or emotional, manipulation or genuine. Let it be messy, human and uncertain." She took his hand, her shadows brushing against his. "We’re both carrying darkness that makes simple emotion difficult. Maybe that means we understand each other in ways others can’t. Maybe that’s valuable even if it’s inconvenient."

Damien looked at their joined hands, shadows intertwining naturally, and felt something shift.

Different from anchor bonds – those were different, grounded in months of shared experience. This was newer, more uncertain, built on crisis and understanding and the dangerous comfort of someone who didn’t ask him to explain the darkness.

"I need to be careful," he said. "I have commitments. People depending on me to maintain stability."

"I know. I’m not asking you to abandon them. Just to make space for this too. Whatever this becomes." She released his hand, stepping back. "But Damien? You should know something. The siege – there’s evidence it was orchestrated specifically. The intelligence – I’ve been investigating that too. And what I’ve found is... disturbing."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean someone wanted this siege to happen. Wanted you here specifically, fighting beside me, experiencing crisis that would force things how they wanted them." Her expression was troubled. "I don’t know who or why, but the patterns suggest manipulation at a level we haven’t been accounting for. We might both be pieces in someone else’s game."

She was giving him information that implicated her own possible involvement while presenting it as shared victimhood.

Either she was being genuinely transparent about her own suspicions, or this was another layer of manipulation designed to create trust.

Damien couldn’t tell which. The corruption made reading emotional authenticity difficult.

"We should investigate that," he said. "Carefully. Without revealing what we suspect to whoever might be orchestrating events."

"Agreed. And Damien? Whether our connection is genuine or elaborate manipulation – I want you to know I’m choosing to believe it’s real. Choosing to trust that what we’re building matters beyond whatever game we’re caught in." She smiled, sad and genuine. "Maybe that’s naive. But I’d rather be naive and hopeful than cynical and isolated."

She left him alone in the study, her words echoing.

Damien stood there for a long time, thinking.

About the destroyed intelligence crystal that suggested Lyristae knew more than she was revealing.

He needed answers. Needed to understand what was really happening.

But first, he needed to repair things with Seria and Elara. Prove he could maintain commitments despite the complications.

Tomorrow, he’d focus on his anchors. On transparency.

Now, he’d try to understand why the thought of Lyristae made something in his chest ache in ways the corruption couldn’t suppress.
