I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 209: Two Years
....
"Will you accept the proposal?"
It had been a day since Leo returned to the planet he owned. He was sitting in his office, looking at the proposal that he had received from the Watchdog Headquarters.
"Do you have to be here when I go through your proposal?" Leo asked, looking at the holographic figure before him.
It was no ordinary representative of the Watchdogs. The man held a position far higher than the man who represented them in the court.
He was the Director of the Agency, and one of the prominent names in the galaxy.
"I just want your answer. Or are you trying to wait for the deadline to pass?" The man asked Leo while occasionally glancing at the clock.
"Do I look like someone who would do such a thing?" Leo acted shocked, even though the thought did cross his mind.
The closer they were to the deadline, the more desperate the Director of the Watchdogs was going to become. And only when they were truly desperate, would they give him what he wanted.
"I read through your proposal. And honestly, it’s not half bad. You are offering me the property owned by the Watchdogs in our space sector, while also promising to close the branch in this sector."
Leo closed the file, appreciating the offer. However, he didn’t outright accept it. It was far from satisfactory for him.
"Not just that, we are also offering you two trillion credits on top. It’s already beyond what we can afford to spare," the old Director said.
Even though his expressions were barely visible, but Leo could feel that he was also nervous, as something like this had never happened.
"As I said, it’s a good offer. But if I don’t accept it, and go with the original terms of settlement, wouldn’t I receive much more? After all, your yearly revenue is much higher than a mere two trillion. Isn’t that right?"
"Reo Vanderlen, I would advise you to not bite more than you can chew. Even though we have revenue, we also have a lot of expenses. We can’t afford to take that money out, or it would be chaos. We don’t just run your space sector."
"Are you saying you can afford it? In that case, can I provide you a loan? Unfortunately, for such a large loan, I would definitely have to take equal collateral..."
"You... That’s enough of messing around. I’m certain you also know that we can’t meet those absurd terms of settlement. So tell me, what do you really want?! Make it realistic!"
"I just want my dear brother. Find him, and bring him back to me. Isn’t that easier?"
"You think I wouldn’t have tried, if we could? We don’t have him! Ask for something else!"
No matter how many times Leo tried to poke the man, he was consistent with his story. It was as if he really didn’t know that Leo hadn’t actually escaped from the ship.
’He isn’t a fool. I’m certain he would have interrogated all the members that were involved in my arrest. He must know that I was tossed to that unnamed prison. Is there really a reason for him to pretend to not know?"
Leo observed the old man’s expressions. It was impossible to see what the man was actually thinking.
"Fine. I will believe you. I will give you a way out. I need three things from you. And I wouldn’t accept any further negotiations. If you’re willing, I will sign right away."
One after another, Leo told his terms to the old man.
The old man still remained expressionless as he heard Leo’s words. After a long period of silence, he nodded.
"Although the third request is a bit troublesome, we can arrange for that. I will send you the upgraded terms to sign."
The hologram disappeared, and within a few hours, an upgraded contract reached Leo.
This time, the compensation was increased from two trillion to five trillion. But that was just one of the three compensations that he had received.
The second compensation was that he had a blank permit from the Watchdogs. With that, as long as he had the funds and resources, he could open a branch in any space sector, without needing any other permit.
There was no need to satisfy any other criteria. It was truly like a blank check, to boost his banking business.
As for the third condition, that was the most important for Leo. It was also something that he had least expected to be fulfilled.
"This should come in really useful if the Ancient Houses actually go to war. But I do hope that a day like that never comes when I have to use this."
Leo digitally signed the compensation terms, and sent it back. With that, the court case had permanently been closed.
Within twenty four hours of the contract being signed, the Watchdogs transferred five trillion to the Alpha Corp’s Bank.
Leo, having gone almost bankrupt of cash, finally had enough to spend again. And spending was what he was going to do. Albeit, not as per his initial plans.
With the war of ancient houses looming, he had cancelled the plans of immediate expansion into other space sectors for now.
For now, Leo planned to waste the money in something that was an infinite pit.
Half of it was reserved to strengthen his military might, ordering more warships from other Space Sectors. As for the other half, it was for his city.
....
[Two Years Later]
It had been a little over two years since Leo had received the compensation from the Watchdog Agency which completely abandoned this space sector.
During these two years, Leo had further consolidated his power in this space sector.
The banks that had survived during the Lionel Family’s Era, had also fallen in these two years.
No one knew if it was because of Leo’s Influence, or if the banks really shouldn’t stay profitable with the appearance of Alpha Bank that had stolen all the customers.
The Alpha Bank had risen like a star in these two years. Even though it hadn’t expanded into other space sectors, it did open its branches within a few other planets, including the planet that was initially owned by the Lionel Family.
The fleet that was already fearsome when it first appeared, had become even stronger. With the new ships being delivered, there was almost no one in this space sector who could even think about challenging the Alpha Corp.
Many people thought that Leo was going to spread his influence and his name in other space sectors. They thought that this was the reason he was strengthening his military, but he was strangely silent during this time.
Leo was only rarely seen during these two years. Every glimpse of him was celebrated like a rare sighting.
In fact, his rare sightings made many wonder exactly what he was doing. They believed that he must be doing something just as significant as ever.
Was he preparing to take over another Galaxy? Or was he planning to save another planet with his money?
No matter what, people expected a lot from him already, and they didn’t think less of him. He had already become a legend, like a myth.
He had achieved all this within just a few years of his first appearance.
Unfortunately, even the Alpha Labs, had been covered by Leo’s shadows. Even if they came up with interesting discoveries, they rarely made as much noise as Leo’s single appearance.
The people of earth and beyond didn’t realize that Leo wasn’t showing himself, simply because he didn’t want to. There was no point in that.
As for not expanding in other space sectors, it was simply because of the Ancient Houses. After all, in these last two years, even though people on earth didn’t know about it, the center of the universe was in a true mess.
An entire galaxy had been destroyed during these last two years as the war between the ancient houses actually began.
The Galactic Union tried their best to help people evacuate the Galaxy which had become a battlefield, but still, many lives were lost.
For the ancient houses, what was a mere two years? Their first war lasted for even longer, so Leo didn’t really expect that war to end anything soon.
During these two years, even though he didn’t really hear much from the Galactic Union, he did get some occasional news that the Galactic Union was searching for someone.
It was a person who didn’t have a face. Or rather, he was only seen with a mask.
Leo had a really good idea about the person that union was looking for. He had basically become the most wanted person in the universe.
The only good thing was that they didn’t know what he looked like. Only Necropolis had seen his face as the envoy, and for them, all humans looked more or less the same.
