Immortal In A Death Game-Chapter 199: Not Alone
"Where are you?!"
Adam was supposed to be an A-tier Hero. James was perfectly aware of how strong they were—they were able to punch through concrete walls like cardboard.
Just a single one of them was capable of mass destruction to a city if left unchecked. But A-tiers weren’t supposed to be unstoppable—that title belongs to the S-tier Heroes.
So why... why couldn’t they stop Adam? Why—
"Wh—?!" His thoughts shattered as something heavy crashed in front of him. He quickly stepped back and stared at the twisted metal, trying to process what it was.
"This..." It was the entire hatch of a tank.
"B-tiers can rip apart tanks?" James backed away, his hands shaking.
He grabbed his radio. "Command, we need immediate reinforcement! The Hero is—"
But alas, even after several seconds, the only thing that answered him was static. And so, the only thing he could really do right now was once again try to control the chaos.
"Fall back to defensive positions!" he roared to his men even though he couldn’t see them anymore. "Maintain—"
But as he was about to scream more commands, he noticed something. Silence.
The gunfire had stopped. The screaming had stopped. Even the smoke seemed to hang motionless in the air.
"Squad leaders, report!" James called out.
Nothing.
"Men? Toretto?! Anyone?! Is anyone still alive?! W—"
And then, through the haze, two green orbs approached slowly. A menacing silhouette that approached him like a predator—Adam the Endless.
He looked like a tiger, if tigers were only five-foot-four.
"Stay back!" James drew his sidearm and opened fire.
Adam didn’t even flinch. A bullet struck him directly in the eye, and James felt a moment of savage satisfaction—until, that was, the bullet slowly slid out, and he watched the eye regenerate instantly.
"Fuck!" James kept firing until his gun clicked empty. Adam stood three feet away, completely unharmed.
Despite looking down at the shorter man, James felt impossibly small. Adam reached out and gently took the pistol from his trembling hands. And then... Adam said the last thing James expected him to say.
"You should be more careful firing your weapon," Adam said quietly. "Do you have no regard for your own men?"
"You! You’ve killed them all!" James screamed. "You’re a monster!"
Adam stared at him for a while. He was about to open his mouth, but then suddenly looked away and pressed a finger to his ear.
"You found it?" he muttered to himself. "Okay, I’ll head there now."
"Where are you going?" James grabbed Adam’s arm. "Kill me! Finish what you started!"
"Huh...?" Adam looked at him with genuine confusion. The haze around them began to clear—no, it vanished in the blink of an eye.
James blinked, trying to process what he was seeing. His men stood around the base, very much... alive, some glaring at him with obvious irritation.
"I told you," Adam said. "You almost killed your own men shooting blindly like that."
James wasn’t listening. He scanned the damage around them—buildings torn apart, vehicles destroyed, the entire base looking like a war zone. But he was sure of it... Adam hadn’t done this.
Above them, two figures flew through the air, waving at Adam before diving somewhere in the base.
Since when had someone been flying over their heads?
"Retreat with your men," Adam said. "As I said before, I’m not here to harm any of you, Sir."
"How... is that even possible?" James whispered.
"Well..." Adam blinked, then shrugged. "I have good restraint."
And just like that, he walked away as if nothing had happened... and none of the soldiers moved to stop him.
Adam only glanced at them once, nodding at the last soldier he passed by before turning around a building. And there, leaning against a wall, was Selene.
"Have... Have I proved to be of delightful use, newbie?" She panted heavily, wiping the sweat off her cheek.
"Are you alright?" Adam helped her steady herself.
"I am fine," Selene gasped. "Nothing a good tea can’t fix."
Adam nodded, looking around at the base.
"You’re... really impressive," he said. "I didn’t think you’d be able to cover the entire base."
"Well... if I don’t use the gift god gave me well, then I might as well not use them, no?" She gasped again.
"Do... you want me to carry you?"
Selene raised an eyebrow. "Don’t be ridiculous. Let us just join the others."
"...Okay."
The two made their way through the ruined base, going into what looked like a small storage shed. The others were already there, gathering in front of a small, unremarkable door.
"Why don’t we just break through it?" They heard Harvey say as they approached. The Forger was already there, too, rolling his eyes and sighing at the Hero.
"That would risk triggering automatic security protocols," the Forger replied. "Have some patience."
And just as soon as he said that, the door clicked open.
"Well, what about that?" the Forger said, noticing Adam and Selene behind them. "Right on fucking time. I’m good, I’m really good."
"Alright!" Harvey stretched his flexible limbs. "Time to fuck up everyone down there."
And while everyone was preparing to face whatever was down there, Leona gently approached Adam. "Are... you ready?"
Adam nodded and stepped forward quietly. But as he was about to step through the door, an alert rang on their phones—an IBAA emergency.
"Purple Leak detected in downtown Las Vegas," Beatrice quickly said to the others. "Everyone’s needed."
"Purple?!" Harvey’s eyes widened. "That’s a wrong fucking time—"
And without even waiting for anyone else to say something...
...Adam turned around.
"We should go," he said. "I heard someone shout that there was a chopper somewhere here. We should take that."
"Huh...? The fuck are you talking about?" Harvey raised an eyebrow. "We’re already here."
"The people come first," Adam just shook his head.
"I’d have to agree with the oaf," the Forger warned. "The Hospital will be scrubbed clean by the time we get back."
"It... doesn’t matter. Let’s go."
"Adam." And out of nowhere, Mira stepped into his path. "You’re not alone anymore."
"Huh...?"
The others moved to block him as well. Leona placed a firm hand on his shoulder.
"Leave the Leak to us," she said. "Finish what you need to finish here."
"But—"
"No," Harvey interrupted. "Ugh. I wanted to beat on some nerds, but...
...You do what you came here to do, bro."
