When the examination tournament resumed the next day, there was only one arena. Around it, viewing stands had been constructed overnight. They were enough for several hundred spectators. Many people had already gathered by the time Chen Wentian and Long Yifei arrived. There were sacred daughters who had been eliminated as well as their acolytes. There were also guests from afar.

Each event only had eight contestants. There weren’t many duels left so everyone was excited. They all wanted to see who would emerge as the champion of singing and dancing.

With so few contestants, there were many familiar faces. For singing, there was Wei Shuangshuang of the Starry Wei Clan and her acolyte Immortal Hundred Palms Wu Chao of the Undying Medicine Valley. She was smiling brightly and carried herself with a confident air, almost as if she had already won the competition.

There was Wu Qi who specialized in fire-attribute songs. She had no acolyte but she had been a member of the Order from birth. There was also Sun Jian who came from the Profound Sword Palace. She wasn’t considered a favorite for the singing event but she was a multi-talented woman who did well in all of the four classics. She was a true gem amongst the sea of sacred daughters.

Chen Wentian studied Sun Jian with some interest. Her features were sharp and her aura was even more so. She reminded him of Peng Lingxi but more feminine. He also caught a glimpse of the immortal standing beside her. Immortal Seven Swords Sun Linghe was a tall, imposing man with a serious face. His aura was noble but heavy, carrying the might of a Spirit King.

As for the dancing contestants, there was Xuanyin Shujun. She was the strongest challenger to Long Yifei. She had a mysterious background and her acolyte was even more so. That person wore a mask and didn’t speak a word, pretending to be a walking statue.

Aside from them, the audience also contained a few familiar faces. Among them was Su Yaoci and her acolyte Xu Gaotian. Su Yaoci went up to Long Yifei and congratulated her on making it to the top eight in both events and gushed about how excited she was to see today’s duels. Xu Gaotian also approached Chen Wentian and the two men engaged in a casual chat. Amongst the sea of sacred daughters and acolytes, they were the only two who came up to Chen Wentian and Long Yifei.

A ball rang and everyone turned to the source. Of the three judges, one of them had stood up.

“Everyone, we will be starting shortly. Please go to your seats. Sacred daughters, prepare yourselves.”

The one who spoke was Immortal Amethyst Tailor Zhang Ziwen. She was a member of the executive council and part of the faction loyal to the Order and not the Seven Potentates. Seeing this gave Chen Wentian a lot more confidence. Perhaps there wouldn’t be so many tricks played against them.

Zhang Ziwen continued speaking. She introduced the contestants for each event and drew the bracket. She also outlined some new rules for the final duels.

Unlike before, sacred daughters of different cultivation levels were now allowed to attack each other. To make it fair, the one with the higher cultivation would wear a special battle robe that would restrict their spiritual energy to a lower level to match their opponent. Therefore, it could be considered an equal fight.

Chen Wentian immediately felt something was wrong. He was about to think of an excuse to protest but another person spoke up before he could. To his surprise, it was Xuan Xina.

“Abbotess Zhang, why was the rule change announced so late? The sacred daughters don’t have enough time to prepare. Although these special battle robes are not uncommon and we have used them before, announcing it like this is unfair to everyone.”

Zhang Ziwen’s expression remained impassive, “Prioress Xuan, your complaint is noted. However, this was decided by this judging panel. The decision is final. Does anyone else have anything to say?”

Silence greeted her question.

“Very good, let’s start with our first singing duel. Long Yifei and Sun Jian. Sun Jian is currently at the 9th Level of the Spirit Initiate Realm so Long Yifei will have to wear the restriction.”

The two sacred daughters stepped up before the gazes of the crowd. Long Yifei wore a thin outfit over her original battle dress. The material was thin and flexible and it didn’t affect her movements. Since it was the rule, she had to wear it.

Sun Jian had a calm expression even though she was facing one of the favorites. In terms of pure voice talent, Long Yifei was superior. This fact was well-known across the whole campus. However, in a direct confrontation, there were still many variables.

The bell rang and the duel began.

Sun Jian immediately began to sing. Her high-pitched voice dived into an energetic, powerful song. Chen Wentian didn’t know the name but it carried the aura of swords. Her voice was the conduit for her spiritual energy which formed invisible blades aimed at Long Yifei.

Sun Jian started her attack. Five sword blades slashed toward Long Yifei without a trace of mercy. It was as if she was engaged in a bloody battle instead of a friendly duel between students. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

A frown briefly flashed on Long Yifei’s beautiful face before she opened her mouth. An icy tune flowed out like a wintery night. It was not the Reflections Beside an Icy Stream that she usually sang. Instead, it was the far more powerful Alone in Winter. This song created a swirl of icy snow around her body, creating a protective shield.

Ping!

Ping!

Ping!

Sun Jian’s swords were easily deflected.

She didn’t despair and continued her attack, singing spiritedly and launching wave after wave of sword lights.

Long Yifei defended serenely. Against an opponent at a lower cultivation level, she was showing courtesy by letting them attack first. She felt no threat from Sun Jian. Although her sword song was very powerful, so was her snow song.

Alone in Winter was one of the most powerful songs created by Xuan Xina. It perfectly utilized one’s icy arts and only strengthened Long Yifei’s prior cultivation of Winter’s Snow Dance.

However, after several exchanges, there was a faint but noticeable change. The snowstorm around Long Yifei’s figure weakened by a degree and she started to struggle to defend against the sword strikes.

“Fei’er…” Chen Wentian’s voice reached her ear, “What’s wrong?”

Long Yifei grimaced, “I… I don’t know. Her sword song isn’t anything special.”

She deflected three more swords with great difficulty. Her voice felt weak. Her body felt heavy and she was getting out of breath. Such a thing should have been impossible.

Chen Wentian spread his spiritual sense through her body and realized the problem. It was the special battle robe she was forced to wear. It was the culprit.
