Chapter 356: The Furies Unleashed

Megaera’s cry for help reverberated as the spears almost devoured her. The plasma’s horrifying heat made her sweat and shiver—not because of the flames.

They were powerful, able to burn her skin’s outer layer. But the dread assaulting her heart—a goddess’ heart—came from their color. This darkness felt as if gluttonous beasts swallowed the air and photons. Just who was this mortal, and how could he wield godly authorities, several at that, to make it more confusing?

The question lingered but the spears didn’t wait—they almost punctured her body. Before they did, lightning boomed and darkness stirred like shadows around her. She sighed in relief, then clenched her jaw. Her sisters were here. And with them, she’ll wash this humiliation with this mortal’s blood! freёwebnoѵel.com

Adam glared at the emerging blond and dark hair. Two figures as gorgeous as Megaera appeared, their clawed fingers and belts blurring to meet his spears. Together, the three sisters shattered his omnidirectional strike.

His expression crumbled, and his heart sank. Facing Megaera alone had been a nightmare—her underestimation of him, the impact of his god slayer, and his natural advantage against her fire had been his only saving graces. To think he ever stood a chance without those factors was foolish arrogance. Two more on her level?

’Flee!’ Not wasting a second to watch how Alecto and Tisiphone helped Megaera shred his plasma, he turned heel, trembling slightly as he rushed to Garduck.

He gripped him by the shoulder, continuing forward. Each meter he put between him and the goddesses increased his chances of escaping ever so slightly... even if it was by a drop in the ocean of dread fueling his stomps.

However, he couldn’t help but berate himself. ’Turn back and fight! The red-haired bitch’s fire can empower you. A few more hits and your essence will soar enough to cleave a path through their charred corpses.’

But he glared at Garduck and clenched his jaw. He wasn’t alone. He had a responsibility toward him, not to mention a broader overarching plan.

’I’m not stepping back. It’s a tactical retreat!’ Dark water wafted from his palm. In the blink of an eye, it swirled into a chaotic pool that gradually folded the surrounding space.

Meanwhile, amidst the dissipating flames, the furies’ eyes narrowed.

"We have a lot of fun time ahead—an eternity. It’ll be a pity to leave so soon, don’t you think so, little mortal?" Tisiphone grinned, lightning rumbling with each flap of her dark wings.

Alecto followed right behind her, her lips pursed in displeasure. "Who do you take yourself for with that ashen skin and glowing crevices, or did you think you looked good? By Zeus, I swear no woman will ever take an interest in you."

’What the heck?!’ Adam almost turned to reply but focused on crossing the stabilising water. ’I’m handsome, sinfully handsome! And I have a woman!’

A firm hand on his shoulder and a determined voice distracted him. "They’re too fast. I’ll buy you the seconds you need to escape."

He glared at Garduck, who unsheathed his blade and narrowed his eyes. "The only thing you’ll buy is an early grave in this desolate place. Shut up, fool!"

With a swing of his arm, he sent a blast of air to dig a straight line between him and the Furies. From it, plasma and saltwater roared, then rose into a dark wall of pure destruction. Thousands of fiery halberts hovered in front of it while water jets as sharp as divine blades erupted like geysers.

Simultaneously, he watched the space fold with bated breaths. Just a second more, and they would be out of this mess.

Yet, the three sisters waved their fingers with a snort.

The water parted before Tisiphone and her authority over storms; a swirling tunnel formed in the plasma wall under Megaera’s influence; and Alecto bypassed everything by turning into a lunging shadow.

Dread’s icy fingers wrapped around Adam’s heart. Together, those sisters became monsters of versatility, relentless hunters that tore through elements. And against them, he wouldn’t get that second he needed.

Chaos swirled in his eyes, and his grip tightened on his weapons. He pushed Garduck behind his unwavering back. "Cross the vortex once it’s stable."

Then, without waiting for an answer, he crouched, ready to fight a desperate battle. But not a shadow of doubt flashed in his eyes. He’d survive like he always had.

Before he lunged, however, his eyes widened as the Furies halted cold. Their bodies trembled so much that the noise of leather ruffling skin almost overpowered the plasma and water. What was happening?"

As if to answer him, a voice dripping with mockery reverberated. Simultaneously, smoke swirled like an ill omen, shaping itself into a purple-haired woman.

"Well, well, well. If it’s not our dear hunting dogs. Don’t you have a poor kid who killed to feed his sick mother to chase to the edge of the underworld?" Her violet eyes narrowed into slits as she crossed her arms over her somber dress. "Or did millennia in Erebus turn you mad enough to attack mortals falling outside your jurisdiction?"

Adam didn’t give this person more than a glance. Instead, he bit his lip as he saw how close the shadow Fury was to him—not even ten steps! Shuddering, he leapt into the vortex and snapped it shut behind him before anyone could recover.

The noise of the water closing awakened Alecto, who stomped the ground in suppressed rage. "Why did you interfere, Eris?! Aeacus requested us to capture him!"

Tisiphone joined her, her teeth gritted. "How is it your business, and what are you doing in the underworld?"

Megaera, slower because of her wound and angrier than ever, added. "You bi..." She bit her lip. "You’d better explain yourself."

"Explain what?" Eris rose to the sky, her arms wide open and an amused smirk playing on her lips. "I come and go wherever I want, sowing discord and chaos with my every step." 1

Smoke swirled around her body, her robes flapping. "And I enjoy watching this mortal poke overconfident gods like you. But tell me, how much longer will you bend your spine to please the Olympians? You tried; they still hate you even more than me." She winked, her body fading with the smoke as her last words lingered above the Phlegeton. "Perhaps it’s time to shift allegiance. Contact me if you find the resolve to do so... or remain mere disposable hunting dogs."

Her son is the personification of the River of Oblivion. She has access to the underworld through him.
