In Another World, Everyone Want to Kill Me!-Chapter 158: Medicine and Laughter
It appeared that those people had targeted him alone and had not troubled Yue Mingxuan.
Noticing the calm in Rong Qinglei’s brow, Yue Mingxuan understood that he had been worried about her. "You don’t need to think about anything right now. Just focus on recovering. Once your health is fully restored and you succeed in inheriting the throne, remember to pay me a year’s tax from Beirong as your medical fee."
Rong Qinglei knew Yue Mingxuan was trying to cheer him up, so he half joked, half seriously replied, "Rather than a year’s tax as a fee, why not offer all of Beirong as a dowry and have me marry you as Empress? I wonder if you would be interested."
Yue Mingxuan laughed. "Oh my, the Emperor has chosen so carefully, yet he ended up selecting you, this prodigal son. If he ever heard that, he would surely be furious."
Rong Qinglei responded somewhat gloomily, "But I don’t wish to hold a high position."
Call him foolish or lacking ambition if you will, he did not desire the position that so many others longed for.
Hearing this, Yue Mingxuan was somewhat surprised.
Many people had fought tooth and nail for this seat, yet the ultimate "winner" was someone who had no intention of ascending the throne at all.
"Then what do you intend to do? Live your whole life as a leisurely prince?"
Yue Mingxuan’s question brought a trace of bewilderment to Rong Qinglei’s brows. "I don’t know either. But now, I have no way to retreat."
He was already trapped on a hot iron stage; ever since he moved into Chengqian Palace, it had been destined that he could no longer live as a leisurely prince.
Before him lay only two paths: win or die. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Thinking of Rong Qinglei’s condition, Yue Mingxuan quickly changed the heavy topic. "Ah, talking about such meaningless things, why not let me tell you a joke?"
Rong Qinglei nodded.
Yue Mingxuan cleared his throat and began: "Once, there was an emperor who had two consorts. He favored one greatly and cared little for the other. One year, both consorts became pregnant and gave birth to two sons simultaneously. The emperor named the favored consort’s child ’Face,’ and the child of the less favored consort he named ’Butt.’ Both sons grew up healthy and strong until the age of three. Then, suddenly, both contracted smallpox. Face could not survive and died, while Butt, fortunate in life, survived. The emperor was deeply saddened, melancholic even at court. Seeing this, the ministers thought: ’This cannot continue. If the emperor remains in a bad mood, our days as ministers will be unpleasant as well.’ So one day, the prime minister submitted a memorial to the emperor—" At this point, Yue Mingxuan deliberately left a pause. "Can you guess what the memorial said?"
Before Rong Qinglei could answer, Yue Mingxuan imitated one of the emperor’s eunuchs, using a strange, sing-song tone: "Your Majesty, please restrain your grief. Your Face is gone, but your Butt remains."
As soon as the words fell, Rong Qinglei burst out laughing, not because the joke itself was particularly funny, but because the voice Yue Mingxuan had imitated was uncannily like the eunuch at the emperor’s side.
Seeing Rong Qinglei laugh out loud, Yue Mingxuan finally relaxed. His illness was most worsened by anxiety; all trivial matters could wait until he fully recovered.
At that moment, a eunuch brought over the brewed medicine.
Yue Mingxuan saw this and said, "I’ll take my leave now. The medicine works best if allowed to cool slightly before drinking."
Rong Qinglei had wanted to keep her a little longer, but seeing that the day was late, he did not stop her.
He instructed the eunuch to give her a lantern and personally fastened a cloak around her shoulders. "Make sure to come early tomorrow."
Taking the lantern the eunuch handed her, Yue Mingxuan smiled and waved at Rong Qinglei. "The night is cold; you should also return to your room early."
Rong Qinglei watched Yue Mingxuan leave, and the smile that had been on his face immediately vanished.
He was now caught in the midst of countless whirlpools, completely powerless.
He had wanted to protect her properly, but now that she had become entangled in this, he could do nothing.
Although he carried the title of heir to the royal family, he possessed not a shred of real authority.
Three days passed quickly like flowing water.
Yue Mingxuan felt as though he had become a spinning top, constantly rushing back and forth every day, adjusting the prescriptions for both princes nonstop.
Despite all this exhaustion, Shang Qinghua continued to wear a scowl, slamming the medicine bowl heavily onto the table.
Yue Mingxuan’s anger finally flared and he spoke up, "Shang Qinghua, you’ve clearly woken up already. Why are you still lying in bed and refusing to get up?"
After a long pause, Shang Qinghua replied lazily, "Serve me while I dress."
He could smell Yue Mingxuan carried the strong scent of medicine, a clear sign that she had just returned from Rong Qinglei’s side.
Hearing this, Yue Mingxuan was nearly at a loss for words, anger and disbelief mixing.
"Don’t you have your own hands?" he exclaimed.
Shang Qinghua shrugged. "I have no strength."
Without hesitation, Yue Mingxuan brought the bowl over and placed it in his hands.
"Then sit on the bed and drink it."
Shang Qinghua did not refuse, he took the bowl and drinking it cleanly. Then he asked, "Do you treat Rong Qinglei the same way as you do to me?"
Yue Mingxuan tilted his head feeling confused. "What does whether you take your medicine have to do with how I treat Rong Qinglei?"
Over the past three days, Shang Qinghua had made more comments than he could count, but as a doctor, he treated both patients equally, there was no favoritism.
Shang Qinghua handed the empty bowl back to Yue Mingxuan. "Gongsun Xing and the others should be arriving today. Have you decided how to deal with them?"
