Chapter 238: Waiting for the Truth

Hearing him speak that way, Yue Mingxuan completely misunderstood his meaning.

The displeasure already on his face deepened further.

"So you’re saying he’s capable of everything? Yue Mingxuan, aren’t you overestimating him a little too much?"

For some reason, listening to Yue Mingxuan praise Gongsun Xing so highly stirred an inexplicable irritation in his chest.

Yue Mingxuan, however, had no idea what sort of mood Shang Qinghua had suddenly fallen into.

He simply nodded and said, "Yes. When it comes to medical skill, I don’t think anyone can surpass him."

In his heart, he silently prayed that Gongsun Xing would indeed manage to determine the components of the poison.

Otherwise, he would truly be finished.

His answer caused Shang Qinghua’s expression to ease somewhat. So he had been talking about medical skill all along?

That was different.

In matters of medicine, if Gongsun Xing claimed second place, absolutely no one would dare claim first.

"Even if he manages to analyze the poison’s composition, so what?" Shang Qinghua said. "As things stand now, even if the poison is identified, you’ll still end up bearing this blame."

Yue Mingxuan shook his head. "Maybe that’s how it looks to you. But to me, even if I’m going to die, I’d at least like to die understanding what happened. Shouldn’t I at least know what poison it was?"

He couldn’t very well be framed as the one who administered the poison and not even know what kind of poison he had supposedly used.

Shang Qinghua felt a little helpless.

Under circumstances like these, shouldn’t most people be anxious about clearing their names? Why was he instead more concerned about the poison itself?

But as the saying went, every profession is like a mountain apart.

Shang Qinghua’s thoughts were understandable.

After all, few people realized that the age and composition of a poison could sometimes serve as evidence to clear a someone name.

Seeing that Yue Mingxuan showed no sign of urgency, Shang Qinghua asked, "Is healing the sick and saving lives really that important to you?"

Important enough that, in order to resolve a question, he would completely disregard his own safety?

Yue Mingxuan let out a faint sigh.

As the saying went, every profession was like a mountain apart, and when Shang Qinghua spoke of medicine, it was as though several mountain ranges stood between them.

"Healing the sick and saving lives is important, of course," he said. "But I also understand the principle of saving myself before saving others... What about you? Do you really have so much free time to waste here with me?"

At that, Shang Qinghua felt both annoyed and amused.

He had come out of concern for him, how had it turned into being driven away instead?

When Shang Qinghua remained silent for a long while, Yue Mingxuan spoke again. "It’s damp and cold in this prison. It’s not a place to linger. If you don’t have any other business, you’d better leave soon."

After handing over the bag he had brought, Shang Qinghua said coolly, "I only heard that you’d been locked up and was worried no one would bring you proper meals."

He had spent no small amount of money making arrangements before and after coming here, only for his good intentions to be treated like something worthless.

Yue Mingxuan opened the bag and discovered a small pouch of dried beef.

He immediately picked up a piece and tossed it into his mouth.

The long missed taste of meat made him narrow his eyes in contentment.

"Shang Qinghua, thank you so much," he said, his words muffled around the beef.

Hearing his thanks, Shang Qinghua’s expression improved considerably.

"If there’s anything you’re unwilling to tell Gongsun Xing, you can tell me," he said. "Maybe I’ll have a way."

Yue Mingxuan nodded and glanced at him cautiously. "In that case... could you bring me another bag of dried beef next time?"

Shang Qinghua felt around in his pocket.

He truly hadn’t brought extra dried beef.

"Next time," he said. "I’ll bring you more. Is there anything else you want?"

Yue Mingxuan shook his head. To be honest, because of this single bag of dried beef, he almost felt a sense of happiness even while sitting in prison. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

When he saw the look of contentment appear on Yue Mingxuan’s face, Shang Qinghua shook his head helplessly. "I can’t stay long. If you need anything, tell the jailer from earlier."

For now, this was all he could do, try his best to make things a little more comfortable for him, so he would not suffer too much hardship.

Time slipped by second after second.

After Shang Qinghua left, Yue Mingxuan found a corner of the wall and crouched down again, hoping this particular spot was free of rats or anything of the sort.

From his hidden jade bracelet, he took out another piece of dried beef and placed it in his mouth, he then narrowing his eyes in quiet satisfaction.

After returning from Yue Mingxuan’s side, Gongsun Xing threw himself into a state of complete absorption, forgetting food and sleep.

Staring fixedly at the poison in his hand, he seemed almost petrified.

Wang Jian draped a heavy cloak over Gongsun Xing’s shoulders and said softly, "Don’t rush. Take it slowly."

Gongsun Xing shook his head.

Yue Mingxuan was still inside waiting for him to save him, how could he possibly slow down?

Seeing that Gongsun Xing remained immersed in his own world, Wang Jian stepped aside with a helpless sigh.

That was simply the way he was.

Once he set his mind on something, no one could change it.

When it came time to give his all, he was more focused than anyone, and Wang Jian loved that focus more than he could say.

After running through every poison he knew in his mind, Gongsun Xing realized that not a single one matched the symptoms Xie Lianhua had displayed.

Suddenly, like lightning flashing through darkness, three specific poisons crossed his thoughts.
