Infernal Entity: Evolving With My Demonic System-Chapter 55: Spy
How did the Godrend Sword end up in Kinsey Kit’s possession? Could it be that she witnessed Axel kill Dane Cornwall and erase Rick’s memory?
—
After Axel yielded to Nile during Marc’s class, Kinsey Kit scoffed.
She had expected more from him. Not because she thought he was stronger than Nile, but because she believed he would at least try. Nile was clearly superior, faster, more refined, and far more experienced, but yielding that quickly still felt wrong to her.
"Why would he even do that?"
Her eyes stayed on Axel as the fight ended. That was when she noticed something strange. Earlier, during the spar, Axel had been shaking. His breathing was uneven, and his body looked tense, like it was under pressure. It was not the kind of stress that came from fear or pain. It looked worse than that.
But the moment he yielded, it all stopped.
His shoulders relaxed and his shaking eased. His breathing returned to normal. It was as if surrendering had calmed him down instantly.
That didn’t make sense.
Kinsey narrowed her eyes, studying him carefully. She had no explanation, but the feeling stayed with her. It looked like something unseen had pushed him to forfeit, something that forced his body to stop fighting.
"Like an invisible hand?"
The class ended shortly after.
Most students began to leave. She expected herself to forget about Axel and move on like she always did, but she didn’t. She wanted answers.
As students filed out, she watched Axel closely, planning to walk up to him and ask a few questions. But before she could, Marc called out to him.
"Axel Vaelon! A word?"
"What does the teacher want with him?"
The door closed with everyone outside, and Kinsey frowned.
She moved closer and tried to listen, pressing herself subtly against the doors, but the training room doors were thick. Whatever Marc and Axel were talking about, none of it reached her ears.
Minutes passed. Students were already gone, but she stayed anyway, waiting.
Finally, the door opened and Axel stepped out.
He was carrying a sword.
Not just any training weapon. It was the same sword he had used during the spar with Nile.
Her first thought was simple.
"Why would a teacher give him a sword?"
That alone made her suspicious. She considered walking up to him then and there, asking him what Marc wanted, asking why he was allowed to keep a weapon like that, and asking why yielding seemed to calm him down. But something told her not to.
Axel walked down the hallway and out of the building without looking back. Kinsey hesitated only for a second before making her decision.
"I should follow him."
She kept her distance, moving casually, blending in whenever other students passed by. Axel didn’t seem to notice her at all as his focus was elsewhere.
They walked for a while before Kinsey realized where he was going.
Forger’s Bay.
"What is he doing in Forger’s Bay?" she muttered to herself.
A few minutes later...
"He wants to upgrade the sword? Smart choice..." Kinsey murmured to herself as understanding finally clicked.
From where she stood, she watched Axel enter one of the forging shops in Forger’s Bay. It made sense now.
Time passed, but when Axel finally came back out, something was off. He still had the sword, and he hadn’t upgraded it.
Kinsey frowned as she watched him walk away from the shop, heading farther down the street. He didn’t look angry, just... resigned. Like someone who had hit a wall and accepted it.
After he was far enough, she stepped forward and entered the forging shop herself.
"Hi," the shop attendant said with a polite smile. "What would you like to purchase? We have armor, mythic beast shards, forging tools... anything at all. We can also fix your weapons or upgrade them. Which one are you doing today?"
Kinsey shook her head. "I’m not here for any of that."
"Then...?"
"I just want to know why my friend didn’t upgrade his weapon."
The attendant raised an eyebrow. "Your friend?"
"The guy who was just here... with the sword."
Understanding dawned on the attendant’s face. "Ah. Him. He couldn’t afford it."
"How much was it?"
"Five hundred CNT."
Kinsey didn’t react, because she knew five hundred was a lot, especially for a first-year.
"I see," she said after a moment. "Can I see the shards he was looking at?"
The attendant studied her for a second, suspicion flickering across her face, but eventually she nodded. With a wave of her hand, three glowing projections appeared in the air. Three different beast shards, each radiating a different presence.
She stared at them quietly, her eyes moving from one to the next. Then she asked something that made the attendant pause.
"Is it possible to infuse all three into a single weapon?"
"All three? That’s... unusual. Most weapons can barely handle one. But..." She hesitated. "It should be possible. Very risky, but possible."
"Thank you for your time, then!"
She turned and walked out before the attendant could ask anything else.
Her steps quickened as she scanned the area. It didn’t take long to spot Axel. He was heading toward the cafeteria.
He met up with another student near the entrance. Kinsey squinted, trying to remember his name.
"Rick! That’s it."
Rick looked distressed. His posture was stiff, his movements uneasy. Kinsey watched him closely, wondering what had happened to make him look that way.
She glanced around and noticed the third person wasn’t there.
"Where’s the other one?" she wondered. "The loud one."
Soon, Axel and Rick started walking again, and she followed at a distance. Her curiosity had completely refused to let her turn back. It took her a few moments to realize where they were going was the second-year building.
"That place is a no-go zone for first-years," she whispered.
They went inside anyway while she stayed outside, hidden in the shadows, waiting. Her thoughts raced as she connected the dots—one of them was in trouble. That was the only explanation.
"Why does trouble always follow these guys...? And why do I keep following them?"
After a while, Axel and Rick came back out, then they turned into an alley.
She slipped into cover, pressing herself against the wall as Rick suddenly broke down. He was shouting, panicking, his voice cracking as if something inside him had snapped.
Then something else happened. An attack came from the other side.
Kinsey ducked just in time as something sharp and wet flew past her face and struck the wall. It hissed and smoked.
Venom.
Her eyes widened as she saw the attacker step into view.
"It’s him. Isn’t he supposed to be in lockup?!"
Kinsey held her breath as the fight exploded in front of her.
She realized that Dane was too strong, and worse, he was on an Overdrive Serum.
She wondered if she should help. She was ready to move when Dane went for Rick.
Everything happened in seconds, and Axel impaled him.
"Shit, shit, shit!" She panicked. That wasn’t all. A few seconds later, Dane’s body floated up and disappeared slowly.
"What the—" Kinsey covered her mouth, forcing herself not to make a sound. Her heart pounded as she pressed herself tighter against the wall.
She thought it was over, then Axel started screaming in agony.
She watched in horror as his body began to change. Bones snapped, flesh twisted, and his posture shifted as if something inside him was breaking apart and rebuilding itself.
It was unnatural and inhuman.
Eventually, it stopped. Rick was unconscious on the ground, and Axel was... lost?
His eyes were fixed on empty air, like he was looking at something invisible.
"Is he all right?"
All of a sudden, he started talking. He was talking, but no one was there. Or at least she couldn’t see who it was.
She realized that he was talking to someone only he could see, and it confirmed her earlier thought. Something unseen had influenced him back in that sparring match. Something that told him when to forfeit.
Later, Rick woke up, and he freaked the hell out.
He backed away from Axel, shouting, telling him to stay away. Then he said something that made Kinsey’s ears ring.
"You’re a demon!"
She thought she had seen it all. Then Axel did something worse.
He pinned Rick down and then said, "Forget, Rick. Forget everything you saw tonight. Forget that Dane ever attacked, forget the fight. Forget me changing into a... Forget it all."
"Change into what?" Kinsey asked herself.
"Now, sleep."
Rick obeyed and fell asleep immediately.
To Kinsey, it looked like a mind wipe. Her hands started trembling all over again.
"How?!" she thought. "How does he have more than one ability?"
There was no doubt left in her mind. Axel Vaelon wasn’t human.
As the alley fell silent, Kinsey’s eyes dropped to the ground. Something lay there, half-hidden in the shadows. It was the sword. The same one he had used to kill Dane Cornwall.
She stepped forward and picked it up.
"What the fuck are you, Axel Vaelon?"
