Chapter 15: Eva Grace

The easy part was getting them to the railing and pushing them down, but the hard thing was that baiting only one or two at a time was almost impossible. Every time I tried, it was 4 or more. Sometimes even 6.

When the number was high, I had to walk around in circles, and then force one of them out of the group by literally dragging him by his hand and then pushing him down.

Fun stuff.

Not recommended to try at home.

Anyway, one at a time, I went merry-go-round in the terrace garden, then took my time to push them off the railing. The number went down slow at first, but when the last few remained, it got both easier and faster.

As for the last zombie, I felt kind of sad that the fun was over, so I played around for about a minute with him before pushing him down as well.

While it was pretty obvious, each time the stat allocation was done, my strength, stamina and agility increased.

I think it wasn’t as noticeable in the beginning, but now I felt like I could run a marathon and still be fine. As for the most comparable aspect? It was the fact that I could kill the E-Grade zombies in two hits, contrary to the 3-4 hits I needed in the beginning.

Could it be that 100 stats are the peak of humans? I reassessed my assumptions.

Perhaps 100 was not the average but the peak of what a human was capable of. Though in order to confirm it, I needed someone alive to compare my stats with. Hopefully, with Eva and those who are with her in the nurse station.

Moving towards the nurse room, just like last time, I knocked two times.

-Knock! Knock!

"Wait Michael! We are removing the items!"

Though this time, Eva’s voice came from the speakers in the hallway. Looking at the camera, I waved with a bright smile before waiting for the furniture to be removed.

I knew I was right! You can see everything from inside through the cameras. I mumbled, recalling how the people on the 20th floor, east wing tower, simply chose to avoid me completely without opening the door.

About 5 minutes later, as the vibrations from the floor finally ceased, I then heard the clicking sound before the door opened. Wearing a black sweater over her black skirt, Eva came into the picture. Looking at the familiar white-haired, blue-eyed girl, I couldn’t help but give a relieved smile.

"Michael!"

She rushed towards me, hugging me tightly. I too hugged her back for a few seconds before I patted her head and said,

"Thank you for staying alive."

"That’s cringe," she answered in a low but audible voice, to which I chuckled.

Behind the door, there were two more people. Two nurses, a young one who looked at me with excitement, while an aged one who gave me a knowing smile before mumbling something inaudible.

Eva then slowly let go before asking.

"You didn’t get hurt, did you?"

"No love bites yet," I answered with a smirk.

"Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!" I screamed as she pinched both my cheeks before letting go. A slight pout was present on her face before she added,

"Get in."

Hmmm?

As I moved inside, I noticed the carefully placed dead bodies in the corner. One was clearly a zombie. In fact, he was someone I knew, an aged doctor who was our mentor during our initial residency days.

The other one... didn’t seem like a zombie. From the wound on his chest, he seems to have been stabbed.

My eyes narrowed for a few seconds until Eva explained with no need for me to ask anything.

"Doctor Ash turned into a zombie, while the other guy tried to r*pe me. Had to put him down," Eva said with a disgusted look on her face, to which I paused, gave it a brief thought before nodding and giving her a thumbs up,

"Good job."

Already starting with a heavy topic, I didn’t know what to ask first. There were a lot of questions I had regarding the whole apocalypse, about Eva, and about the r*pist and stuff. But then, I decided to let the situation cool down for a few minutes before I began any conversation.

Instead, I took this time to analyze the interior of the station.

There was a mini cafeteria with a bunch of amenities, a TV showing the CCTV image of the entire 18th floor, and a small cabinet with books to read. The elder nurse was sitting on a sofa beside the cabinet, reading the book that she had picked up a few moments before. The other one was playing with a kitchen knife, smiling as she looked at its tip.

"So, how is the situation outside?" Eva asked, curiosity in her eyes.

Eva knew I had come here all the way from the 20th floor. It was obvious for her to believe that I had crossed all the floors from the other side before reaching here. Whether I came from the top, on the 25th floor, or the 10th floor, I would have received a fair share of exposure to explain the situation outside.

"Bad? No, actually it’s worse," I answered.

I then pondered something before asking,

"Before I go into detail, can you first tell me what happened during the night? I just woke up in the morning to find myself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. I am not complaining or anything, but my zombie fans almost chewed me up there."

"Hehe," the younger nurse giggled at my response as I waved at her before turning back to Eva.

Eva paused for a brief moment, recollected her thoughts before answering,

"Long story short. It began last night around 7PM. The news station was broadcasting about the strange attacks, while our hospital was collecting a majority of the victims. Zombies, I mean."

"I don’t know how it all started, but here is what I noticed in the ward where I was stationed. One of the patients started coughing up blood before passing out within a minute. Before anyone could even realize what was going on, he turned into a zombie and started biting everyone around him."

"Panic spread as the zombies multiplied within minutes while the rest of us ran for our lives. Sadly, only 5 of us made it into the nurse room at that time, where we locked ourselves in."

"That happened around 8PM, I think. At that time, other than me, there were Nurse Martha, Nurse Natalia, that patient and that doctor, Mr Ash. Panicking, we could only keep praying for help from outside."

Eva sighed before she looked at the dead patient with a disgusted look and continued,

"Apparently, that patient had a criminal background and was admitted after surviving the attack of a girl whom he had tried to assault. Taking advantage of the chaos, he tried doing the same to us, but Mr Ash killed him in a single go. Said that his last victim was a child. Bastard went the easy way out."

Hearing that, even I felt disgusted with that guy. But then Eva sighed, making a melancholic expression as she continued,

"The TV channels at that time were broadcasting about emergency protocols and how people should stay in their homes, but a few hours later, that too turned off. Hmmm... I think before midnight, we could talk on the landline to one of the lower floors, and they were discussing coming up and saving us. Though that stopped after midnight as well."

"Last, Mr. Ash started turning around midnight, and asked me to put him down before he turned completely. Said he has a daughter in college, and if we were to find her, tell her he loved her a lot."

Eva sighed in the end before pausing completely. Then she looked at me, waiting for me to continue to speak.

"Well. Here is what happened..."
