Chapter 111: Shameless charmers

In interstellar society, situations like this were neither rare nor particularly scandalous. If anything, they were almost mundane—an accepted consequence of a world where power, longevity, and bonds took many forms.

After all, females enjoyed freedom just as much as males did. Sometimes, they enjoyed even more.

Jasper hesitated, clearly weighing his words with unusual care. He drew a quiet breath before speaking, his tone gentle, cautious, and utterly earnest as he looked at Rory.

"Rory... if you ever wanted to," he began slowly, "Nix is here. And Yuel might be able to as well. The two of them—" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Before he could finish the thought, Rory lunged forward and clapped her hand firmly over his mouth.

Good heavens—was he really saying this out loud?

She might entertain such thoughts in the privacy of her own mind, fleeting and hypothetical, but hearing them spoken so plainly was an entirely different matter. Her body—and her sanity—would not survive that level of ambition.

"Jasper," she said quickly, lowering her voice, heat creeping into her cheeks, "I understand what you mean. Really. But let’s... take things one step at a time, okay?"

Jasper blinked, processing this with the seriousness of someone receiving sacred instruction. Then he nodded solemnly, as if he had just been enlightened by profound wisdom.

Only then did Rory cautiously remove her hand from his mouth.

At that moment, Nix returned to the room, holding Burnt Dumpling carefully in both hands, the bird cradled with surprising gentleness as if nothing at all had just happened.

Around the bird’s plump ankle was a thin golden anklet Rory had never seen before. The metal was smooth, elegant, and faintly luminous—clearly no ordinary material. Despite its delicate appearance, it radiated quiet strength.

More astonishing still, the chain extended and retracted freely, stretching up to three hundred feet before snapping back without resistance.

Nix lifted it proudly, like a craftsman presenting his finest work.

"Rory, I made this using leftover alloy from my mech frame," he said with visible pride. "Even a Rank 9 therian couldn’t snap it. I turned it into an anklet for Burnt Dumpling. With this on him, there’s no way he’ll ever get lost again."

Burnt Dumpling’s feathers fluffed in instant outrage.

Excuse me? I’m peak Rank 10, thank you very much. Practically Rank 11.

Rory stared at the anklet in disbelief as Nix placed it gently in her palm.

"I can’t believe something this thin is actually that strong," she murmured.

Then she glanced sideways at Jasper, eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"Jasper... could you break it?"

Jasper hesitated for half a heartbeat, mildly confused by her excitement.

What was so fascinating about a chain?

Still, he answered honestly, chin lifting slightly. "I’m at peak Rank 9. It would take some effort, but... yes. I could break it."

There was absolutely no way he would admit otherwise in front of Rory.

...

Once they arrived at their destination, the group disembarked from the starrail together.

Jasper summoned his Gravicar and helped Rory into the seat with practiced care.

"You’ve been on the starrail for hours," he said gently. "You must be tired. Do you want to rest at my estate first? Once you’ve refreshed, we can go to the clan."

He had already arranged surveillance on the Violet Obsidian Clan days ago. No one there would escape accountability.

Rory shook her head decisively. "No. Let’s handle the important things first."

Priorities mattered.

Besides, the starrail journey had been comfortable—almost luxurious.

Jasper nodded. "Alright. Then we’ll head straight to the Violet Obsidian Clan."

He guided the Gravicar forward.

Central District was vast beyond imagination.

Even though the starrail station was the closest access point, it would still take an entire day by Gravicar to reach the outer territory of the Violet Obsidian Clan—and another half day to reach their core grounds.

Outside the windows, the sky was crowded with sleek Gravicars—polished hulls gleaming under the light, engines humming with restrained power. Each craft moved with effortless precision, their designs unmistakably elite, the kind only wealth and high rank could command.

Rory let out a quiet, almost awed sigh.

"No wonder they call this the Central District," she murmured. "There isn’t a single poor therian anywhere."

Nor any weak ones.

Since stepping off the Starrail, the difference had been impossible to ignore. Every therian she passed radiated strength.

Rank Sixes moved through the streets like ordinary pedestrians, unremarkable in their abundance. Rank Sevens were everywhere, their presence so common it barely drew a second glance. Even Rank Eights and Rank Nines appeared with startling frequency, walking openly through public spaces as if such power were the most natural thing in the world.

Here, strength wasn’t exceptional.

It was the baseline.

"If you like it here," Nix said casually, still holding Burnt Dumpling, "we could live here. Jasper and I both have estates on Central District. Getting you residency wouldn’t be difficult—you could stay wherever you want."

After holding his tongue the entire journey, Ethan Gabriel of Aquadome finally seized his opportunity.

Smiling warmly, he spoke up. "Female Master Rory, you should also come visit Aquadome sometime. It’s vast—and beneath the ocean, you’ll find not just our Black Dragon Clan, there are also the Merfolk Clan, Azure Dragon Clan, White Dragon Clan, Seahorse Clan..."

His enthusiasm only grew.

"Female Master Rory, have you heard of the Seahorse Clan? Like Merfolk, they’re breathtakingly beautiful. But they also possess a rare trait—the males are the ones who give birth."

Throughout the journey, Ethan had watched Jasper and Nix constantly tending to Rory—serving her, teasing her, flattering her—and his worry for Paros had only grown.

With Paros’s temper, how was he supposed to compete with these two shameless charmers?

If Paros lost Rory’s favor completely, what then?

Ethan decided the best solution was to find another Aquadome male—someone powerful, handsome, and attentive—to help Paros maintain his standing.

Beaming, he turned back to Rory.

"Female Master Rory, Aquadome has many strong, high-ranked, attractive males—men who truly understand how to care for a female. If you wish, I could arrange for a few to attend to you."

He sighed dramatically.

"Honestly, you only have Jasper and Nix at your side. That’s far too few to look after you properly."

"Don’t listen to this old fool, Female Master Rory."

Matt Slade cut in sharply, glaring at Ethan. "He’s just terrified that Paros will mishandle you and you’ll stop favoring him altogether."
