Chapter 210: Dark Tides Rising ( 210 )

Macia Town – Midnight

The moon hung silently over the sleeping town. Most homes were quiet. The orphanage lights were out. Even Hazuki, sprawled under the stars behind the orphanage with an empty bottle beside him, was softly snoring.

Elvia and the other children were already asleep.

But outside the town’s western perimeter...

Something stirred.

A faint humming filled the air.

A rift tore open mid-air like paper being sliced. A portal. Dark. Swirling. Ominous.

Blades of light flickered inside it—then claws.

Dozens of mid-tier monsters, large battle wolves, ogre-class trolls, red-horned garm, even a minor basilisk began stepping out from the portal one after another.

One of the night patrols, stationed nearby, spotted it first.

"Wha... What the hell is that!?"

Then his eyes widened as the first monster lunged through the portal.

"M-Monsters!!"

His voice cracked.

The squad leader immediately unsheathed his blade.

"Everyone! Formation!! Form a wall now!!"

The guards scrambled, forming a semicircle in front of the growing horde.

"You!" the leader shouted to a younger scout.

"Run!! Alert the town guard tower! RING THE EMERGENCY BELL!!"

"Y-Yes sir!!"

The scout darted into the night, boots pounding the dirt as he ran toward Macia’s bell tower.

Meanwhile, more monsters emerged.

Their growls echoed under the moonlight.

And deep behind the portal—something larger stirred.

DING! DING! DING!

The emergency bell rang out across Macia Town, sharp and urgent in the dead of night.

Torches flared.

Windows opened.

People leaned out, confused and afraid.

"Monster attack!?"

"Outside the western gate!!"

The town guards scrambled into formation at the inner checkpoint, some pulling on armor, others grabbing spears, bows, or horns.

The knights stationed in town, temporary reinforcements from the capital.rushed toward the gate.

A commanding shout echoed.

"Form ranks!! Cover the civilians!! Archers to the wall!!"

Meanwhile, Inside the Adventurer Guild, the main lights flared back on as staff who had barely gone to sleep were already back at their desks.

A heavy thump echoed from upstairs.

Guild Master Braham, hair a mess and still half-drunk, stormed down the stairs shirtless, sword in one hand.

"WHAT NOW!?" he roared.

One of the staff, panicked, shouted.

"Guild master!! Monsters!! Dozens no, hundreds!!!outside the western forest!!"

Elsewhere in town.

In a quiet house tucked near the edge of the district, Gikan, the Deputy Guild Master, jolted awake.

His sharp ears twitched at the sound of the bell.

He was on his feet within seconds.

"...Monster activity again? This late?"

He grabbed his coat and blade from the wall and headed straight for the gate.

Just as the guards scrambled to reinforce the western gate, and scouts relayed reports of monsters emerging from the forest.

Another portal opened.

This one to the north.

A flash of violet light split the sky like a crack in glass.

Then.

Another.

To the south, near the river crossing.

Then.

One more.

Eastward, close to the trade path.

Within minutes, more portals had torn through the night sky, pulsing with dark energy, like wounds in the world itself.

Each one belched forth monsters.

Some were familiar: trolls, venom boars, giant wolves.

But others...

Too large.

Too armored.

Too fast.

The air thickened with mana. The earth trembled.

A panicked runner burst into the Adventurer Guild.

"GUILD MASTER!!!"

Braham slammed his cup down, wiping his mouth with his forearm.

"What now!?"

"Multiple portals!! North, South, East. Every gate is compromised!!"

Braham’s expression turned dark.

"...This isn’t a random attack."

Ridan floated upward, a faint mist trailing from his cloudy form as he yawned.

"Yaaaawn~ Damn... It’s rare for me to actually sleep."

He blinked around, then looked down.

Hazuki was still flat on the grass, blanket barely hanging onto one leg.

"Oi. Hazuki. Wake up."

"Aaa... " Hazuki grumbled, flipping over.

"What the hell’s with that bell sound in the middle of the night?."

He cracked one eye open.

"Ridan!! Are you the one ringing that damn bell!?"

"Hah!? What kind of spirit prank do you think I pull!? I’m not a bell ghost!"

Hazuki sat up and rubbed his face.

"Ugh... I swear I’m going to kill whoever rang that bell. People trying to sleep here, damnit."

Ridan hovered silently for a second.

Then his tone shifted.

"Hazuki."

"Haa?" Hazuki mumbled, still wiping drool from his cheek.

"...I sense a lot of dark mana. Like... a lot."

Hazuki squinted at him.

"The hell is that supposed to mean?"

He yawned again.

Ridan floated a little closer.

Then smirked.

"Something like... a pile of gold coins."

Hazuki’s eyes instantly opened.

"Oh?"

Ridan’s voice dropped, calm and crisp.

"Unsheathe your sword."

Hazuki yawned.

"Fine, fine..."

With one hand, he lazily drew the greenish blade hanging at his waist.

He didn’t even look behind him, just sidestepped with a tired grunt.

The sword cut through the air,nd the incoming monster from behind split in two, collapsing in the grass with a dull thud.

Hazuki squinted at the corpse.

"...Why this trash come out at night, people are trying to sleep here, damnit."

He sheathed his sword with a sigh.

"Ridan. I’m lazy. You take over."

Ridan’s smirk grew.

"Hehehe~ You got it! Spirit Link— Activate!!"

A pulse of mana surged around them.

Ridan’s cloudy form vanished, sinking into Hazuki’s body like mist drawn into a vessel.

Hazuki’s eyes glowed faintly.

Then—he jumped forward, landing in front of the orphanage fence.

"Nature obey me—Thornbind Bastion!"

Thick thorny vines erupted from the earth, slamming into place around the orphanage perimeter like a living wall. The barrier coiled, twisted, and hardened—blocking any approach.

"Oi, lady!!" Hazuki shouted toward the house.

"Don’t let any of the kids outside!"

From within the orphanage, a familiar voice shouted back, breathless.

"Okay!!" It was Kisha.

Inside the orphanage.

Kisha quickly gathered the kids into her room, pulling the curtains shut.

"Everyone, stay here. Don’t come out until Uncle Hazuki says it’s safe, okay?"

The children, some wide-eyed, some still rubbing their eyes- nodded in unison.

"Umm... okay, Miss Kisha."

She knelt and hugged them close for a moment, then rose and locked the door.

Outside.

The wind carried the faint scent of blood and sulfur.

Hazuki stood lazily just beyond the thorny wall, stretching his arms.

"Ridan."

"Hmm?" Ridan’s voice echoed from within.

"Make it fast. I want to sleep again."

A familiar smirk spread across Hazuki’s face.

"Heh~ understood."

Ridan’s mana surged.

He raised Hazuki’s hand and pointed toward the nearest portal in the dark sky.

Ancient words flowed from his lips, a lost incantation no modern mage could read—let alone cast.

"Varthas’tel nohr... Ez’ravund."

The wind stilled.

The air crackled.

And then.

A torrent of blazing emerald chains erupted from Hazuki’s hand, surging toward the portal like hunting serpents.

They spiraled mid-air—twisting, binding, and snapping shut the rift with a deafening roar.

The portal collapsed in on itself like a shattered mirror pulled into a drain.

Gone.

Silence.
