Chapter 60: Mosquito Mission (Episode 6)

Bzzrt gasped slightly, his metaphorical eyebrows furrowing with surprise.

"A-a dozen!?" He said, "That is indeed a massive amount of Blood Essence. It would take us over three decades to produce such a large amount."

"Thirty years? Wow... a great amount of time." Midas said, raising his brows with perceived shock on his face. But then, his brows suddenly lowered again, "But is it worth permanent peace?" He said in a low tone.

Bzzrt looked to be taken aback by this.

"Well... no. Of course it’s not worth permanent peace... since permanent peace is worth far more!" Bzzrt exclaimed.

Midas smirked, "Then what is stopping you from sacrificing that much?" Midas didn’t let the king answer, "I need you to trust me here, King Bzzrt." He said.

Finally, Midas stopped talking. Silence fell over the room as the player gazed into Bzzrt’s eyes and almost peered into his soul. His look was intense.

Silence was one of the greatest motivators for action when it came to a conversation of persuasion. It was a common tactic used by salesmen back on Earth.

Midas had done everything he could think of. He had defeated the mosquitoes in a battle of physical superiority. He had destroyed their will to fight and had even promised them prosperity and peace, which they desired more than anything else in this world.

He had already led the horse to water. Now, he would remain silent and observe the horse to see if it would take a gulp.

"If possible... could we talk this out in private?" Bzzrt asked.

"Private? Well... sure, I suppose." Midas’s tone almost mimicked disappointment, "But I have given you all the information that I have. I have hidden nothing... I would expect the same from you." He said.

His words were ones that assumed a role of power in the conversation. It sounded like a parent giving permission to a child.

Bzzrt exhaled, "Of course..." He said, feeling the need to prove himself as well, "Your proposition is not measly. In fact... if what you say is all true, it could be amazing for us. However, we do not know if we can trust you. To have that faith... let us communicate."

Midas didn’t say another word.

The mosquitoes turned, buzzing to themselves in an insect language that Midas could not understand.

"Well... it sounds almost too good to be true." A soldier said.

"Maybe it is. Things that are too good to be true usually are false."

"Mmhmm..."

"No." The king interrupted. "Knowing when to take advantage of an opportunity is a trait of successful beings. If what this Player says turns out to be true, it would be obvious to surrender. After all... he’s got us checkmated."

The soldiers nodded in agreement.

"Chances are, if we are to deny him here, that Player is waiting to send a signal that will destroy our entire population. He has already shown his capability, but is hiding it from us. We do not know what more he may be able to do. Above that, he has already stated that with a single flick of his wrist, our entire population will be knocked unconscious. Seeing his previous actions, we can only assume he is telling the truth. Believing that it is a bluff is a risk that has much too big a consequence to take." Bzzrt said, explaining the reasoning in his head.

"Frankly... I believe he has placed us in a position that we can not deny. However, it does not need to spell bad news. He has said it himself. It’s not like he has threatened us with violence only. In his position, he could have already done so. With sheer death and suffering facing us, we would have no choice but to fight back until the end. However, he is promising us only good things in return. He clearly does not have horrible intentions." Bzzrt buzzed.

"Are you sure you want to go through with this, my king?" A soldier asked, a worried look shadowing his face.

Bzzrt glanced over at the soldier mosquito.

"How many thousands of lives have succumbed to those orcs. How much bloodshed must we cower under for the rest of our lives? As long as the threat of orcs exists, I don’t believe a single mosquito can truly breathe freely as if it lived under a clear sky. Our ancestors have suffered greatly, so their fear remains in our very exoskeletons. Even if prosperity isn’t given to us, if the orcs are wiped out, fighting back is something that we can still do. However, if prosperity is given... maybe it will be a good life after all." Bzzrt buzzed again, finally turning to face Midas.

The soldiers didn’t look to disagree with what their king said. They didn’t have much of a choice, and choosing the side with Midas almost seemed like the obvious decision.

"Lord Midas... we agree to your proposition. However... if a single mosquito returns from this siege with a missing limb, you must promise to us that the seal of surrender will be broken." Bzzrt said sternly, his voice mature and kingly.

’Hmm... I don’t know if I can even do that. But I know for sure that no mosquito will die in the plan I have in mind.’ Midas thought to himself.

"I swear it." He said.

Bzzrt smiled. Not because of joy, but because of relief. It was over now, the decision that was weighing down on his shoulders.

To choose the fate of an entire species was not an easy task. But now, it was finally done with, and he was quite sure that he had made the right decision.

"Then it is final. We, the giant mosquito population, surrender unto you, oh great Player. You are now our lord until death do us part. You will attain the Throne of Dominion... I am sure of it." Bzzrt went on to explain the throne for a few seconds.

Afterward, a vortex of purple wind condensed into a large hex in the center of the chamber.

All eyes peered at the hex as it formed above the map-table and finally dissipated into the air.

Midas smiled from ear to ear, "Hahaha!" He suddenly broke out into a laugh.

The mosquitoes had worried looks on their faces.

’Did we make the wrong decision?’

’Whhat thhe crap is that reaction?’

’Oh no...’

"Thank you all!" Midas exclaimed with joy, "I promise to bring you greatness! Hahaha!" He roared with laughter, for he had done it.

He had formed a path to victory. He had formed a path to take over Demadur Island with almost absolute certainty.
