Chapter 28: Chapter 28

The air shimmered as the teleportation glyph collapsed.

Zephyr stumbled forward—then paused. The scent of sulphur and lavender lingered in the misty void around him. It was dim, humid, and eerily silent. A few glowing sigils floated like will-o’-wisps in the haze.

A chamber? No—a rift between dimensions.

[System Alert: You have entered the Lustbound Hollow – Trial Chamber I.]

"What the hell?" Zephyr murmured, glancing around. "This wasn’t part of the plan..."

"Neither was this," came a voice behind him. "But fate always has a strange sense of humor."

He turned.

Seraphina.

She stood there with her black and gold hair cascading over her shoulders, her eyes glowing faintly violet, her armor partially cracked and scuffed. Her wings were folded close to her back, glimmering like woven starlight.

"What—what are you doing here?" he asked, heart thudding.

"The same as you, apparently." She dusted off her thigh-high boots. "I got pulled in during that explosion. The teleportation node fractured. Classic unstable portal nonsense."

She walked forward, slowly circling him. "And now it’s just you and me, Zephyr."

[System Notification: Bond Trial Initiated – Companion Detected: Seraphina, Flame Seraph of Lustbound Order.]

[Trial Objective: Resist or Embrace. Survive 3 cycles. Escape conditions will then be revealed.]

Zephyr blinked. "What the hell does that mean?"

Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "Your system again?"

He nodded slowly, the familiar golden panel fading into the air. "Apparently, we’re in some sort of test."

A pulse of magic rippled through the space, and suddenly the rift reshaped itself—walls forming from fire-laced obsidian, a crimson moon cresting above them in the black sky. A silken bed appeared in the corner, draped in royal purple sheets. A golden chain shimmered across the floor, pulsing faintly with heat and magic.

Seraphina stepped closer. "Well then... shall we pass or fail?"

Zephyr swallowed. "Don’t tease."

"Oh, I’m not teasing," she said coolly. "You and I both know there’s been tension between us since we met. Ever since I saw you resist the Queen’s seduction and walk out alive. That... intrigued me."

She leaned in, her breath hot against his neck. "And now we’re alone."

He met her gaze. "This isn’t just a trap. It’s a test. For both of us."

Her eyes flashed. "Exactly."

Elsewhere...

Zahra blinked awake, gasping.

She was lying in a field of red grass under a blood-hued sky, surrounded by mist. The moment she rose, she felt it—a tug in her chest, a pull from her soul.

"Zephyr..." she whispered.

[System Alert: Your bonded mate has been displaced to a separate realm. Trace function initiated.]

She rose to her feet, determination flashing in her eyes. "I’m coming."

---

Back in the Lustbound Hollow, time blurred.

Each cycle brought new tests: illusions of betrayal, passion-fueled confrontations, cruel desires conjured by the rift to twist them against each other.

But Seraphina held firm. So did Zephyr.

They fought shadows. They shared warmth in the cold hours. He saw the walls she kept up melt slightly with each moment. The proud warrior was... lonely. Tired of being worshipped as an ideal and never seen for the woman beneath.

And then... on the third night, after another wave of phantasms, she collapsed into him, trembling.

"I hate this place," she whispered. "It’s exposing everything I buried."

He held her tightly. "We’ll get out. Together."

The sigils above them shifted.

[Cycle 3 Complete. Trial Passed.]

[Lustbound Hollow Exit Pending... Error: Dimensional Rift Instability Detected.]

[Warning: External Summoning Detected – Interference Imminent.]

Suddenly, a vortex tore open above the chamber.

A deep, commanding voice rang through the rift.

"ZEHPYR THORN. BY ROYAL DECREE... RETURN."

He looked up, eyes wide.

Queen Mira.

She was summoning him.

But not gently.

The rift shook violently. Seraphina screamed as winds roared around them. The ground cracked.

"No! We’re not ready—" Zephyr reached for her, but magic tore at his limbs.

The last thing he saw was Seraphina’s eyes—filled with fear and something deeper—as she mouthed his name.

Then everything went black.

The throne room of Elarion quaked as arcane storms raged beyond its celestial walls.

Queen Mira stood before the summoning basin, her white hair whipping in the violent wind stirred by the rift she had forced open. Her eyes—glowing with forbidden magic—were locked onto the swirling image inside the basin: Zephyr, vanishing into nothingness.

The golden runes she had etched into the marble floor were cracking, bleeding sparks of divine essence. The other court mages screamed for her to stop.

"My Queen, the bond tether is unstable! If you continue—"

"Silence!" Mira’s voice rang like a bell of judgment. "I won’t lose him. Not to that Hollow. Not to her."

She knew who Seraphina was. The Flame Seraph. The one who had lingered in Zephyr’s eyes longer than anyone else. The only one he ever hesitated for.

And Mira hated hesitation.

With a twist of her hand, she hurled another vial of bloodstone essence into the basin. The magic responded violently, howling like an ancient beast waking from centuries of slumber.

[Royal Summoning: Executing... Target: Zephyr Thorn. Interdimensional Anchor Engaged.]

"I will not let him forget who truly owns his soul," she hissed.

Meanwhile...

Zephyr crashed to the marble floor, the air knocked from his lungs.

The throne room of Elarion was drenched in golden light, its high-vaulted ceilings pulsing with arcane energy. The sigils embedded into the floor shimmered as if alive, and above them all sat Queen Mira, regal, radiant... and wrathful.

She descended the steps slowly, every movement measured, dangerous.

Zephyr groaned as he tried to rise—but the moment he did, shackles of light snapped around his wrists and ankles, dragging him to his knees.

[Status Effect Applied: Royal Binding Chains — Movement, magic, and teleportation disabled.]

"You look surprised," Mira said, her voice silk over steel. "Did you think I wouldn’t find you?"

Zephyr met her gaze, jaw clenched. "This wasn’t the way."

"You disappeared. Into the Rift. With her." Her voice trembled with the fury barely kept in check. "You belong here. With me."

"I don’t belong to anyone," he growled.

She knelt before him. Her fingers grazed his chin, tilting his face toward hers. "Then why does your soul scream my name in its silence?"

He had no answer to that.

Mira straightened. "I’ve given you power. Territory. A throne to stand beside mine. And still, you ran into chaos—for her."

"I didn’t run," he said quietly. "I was pulled."

But Mira didn’t care for explanations. She turned to the summoning basin once again.

[Royal Protocol Unlocked: Soul Rift Manipulation — Incoming connections permitted.]

With a flare of her palm, she opened a second rift—into the room where Zephyr had last seen his companions.

---

Back at the Ruined Sanctum...

Zahra’s blade bounced off the barrier for the third time, sparks flying.

"Damn it!" she screamed. "He’s gone again!"

Nyx narrowed her eyes. "No. He’s been summoned."

Isla turned to Seraphina, who was still recovering from her wounds. "You can feel it too, can’t you? Mira used the soul anchor."

Seraphina winced. "If Mira has him, she’ll break him."

"We have to go now," Zahra said. "Together."

Isla looked up as a golden circle shimmered in midair. "Wait. Something’s happening."

A tear formed in the air—and through it came Mira’s voice:

"Come, if you dare. I’ve made room for all of you."

The challenge was set.

Without hesitation, Zahra leapt through. Nyx followed, blades drawn. Isla glanced at Seraphina, then vanished behind them.

Seraphina remained alone.

She looked down at her hands—burned, trembling—and whispered, "He’ll need me too."

Then she stepped through the light.

---

Back in Elarion...

The throne room doors exploded open.

Mira turned just as Zahra landed in a crouch, flames bursting behind her.

"Unchain him," Zahra snarled.

Mira’s smile was cold. "He hasn’t asked to be freed."

"He doesn’t have to," came Nyx’s voice from the shadows as she appeared behind the pillars. "You don’t deserve him."

Isla followed, calm but dangerous. "This is not love, Mira. This is possession."

Then Seraphina appeared last, walking slowly, eyes only on Zephyr.

Mira’s control faltered for the briefest moment when she saw her.

"You," she spat.

Seraphina didn’t flinch. "You fear me because he saw something in me you couldn’t give."

Mira raised her hand, arcane light flaring.

[Combat Imminent: Multiple Divine-Class Entities Detected.]

Zephyr’s chains began to tremble, reacting to the convergence of their powers.

"Stop this, Mira!" he shouted, struggling against the bindings.

But Mira only smiled wider. "Let them come. Let them try to take you."

And as the magic built around her, the entire palace began to quake, the golden dome of the throne room fracturing from the pressure of so many divine-level presences.

Zephyr’s eyes widened as he felt it—

Something else was awakening.

A darkness beneath Elarion. A slumbering thing that felt him.

[New Quest Triggered: Chains of Sovereignty]

Objective: Break free from Queen Mira’s Binding Ritual before the Echo of Elarion awakens.

But before he could even shout—an enormous crack split the air.

The floor beneath them ruptured.

From the depths of the capital, something ancient stirred.

And they all looked down to see eyes—countless, glowing, eldritch eyes—peering up from beneath the palace.
