Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 727 - 726 Sun Wukong Wants to See the Kasaya
Even so, it couldn’t stop Sun Wukong’s distaste for mosquitoes, and he didn’t feel that male mosquitoes were any better than female ones.
He scratched his ears and asked in a low voice, "So for this Buddhist Robe Assembly, do you also have to offer the treasure you just collected?"
"That’s not possible," Xiong Daoren quickly replied. "Although I’ve given him a fake one, the shopkeeper told me that there’s still a blinding skill on it. Only with this skill does it appear exactly like the original, but actually there are some differences. Moreover, the blinding skill has a time limit, a three-year effectiveness. After these three years, it won’t work anymore."
Sun Wukong nodded. "So you dare not take it out because you’re afraid they’ll recognize it."
Xiong Daoren didn’t say yes or no; in any event, he just couldn’t let that disciple and master pair discover there was a second kasaya, as for anything else, that was not his business to handle.
In a short time, the guests at the table had introduced all the clothes they were wearing. When it came to Master Xuanzang’s turn, all eyes turned to him.
Master Xuanzang knew there would be such a scene, but he hadn’t expected it to come so soon.
He glanced at the Six-Eared Macaque and then said, "This poor monk is just a wandering monk, and I truly do not possess any exquisite Buddhist robes."
"This Great Mage speaks too modestly," someone said. "Just by looking at the Great Mage’s countenance, I can tell he is a person of prestige. How can someone of prestige not have a single magical treasure on him?"
Master Xuanzang was not adept at dealing with such situations, so it was the Six-Eared Macaque who stepped forward to smooth things over.
"My master really doesn’t carry any exceptional magical treasures. We disciples are still on our way to the Western Heaven for scriptures; it is a long journey, and we dare not carry anything rare and magical with us."
"Journey to the West for scriptures?" The crowd became interested. "Then on this journey of yours, you’ll probably collect quite a few merit points, right?"
"We do not know about that," replied the Six-Eared Macaque, welcoming their active questioning. "But along the way, we may encounter various evil demons. If we can subdue them, it’s true that their merit points could be added to us."
"That’s great," said the Grass Spirit. "No wonder I felt that this elder exuded an air of nobility when I first saw them. It turns out it’s because they’re going on a journey to the Western Heaven for scriptures. Maybe they’ll achieve becoming immortals or achieving buddhahood in the future. We should really curry favor with them."
Once the Grass Spirit made this suggestion, the other spirits and cultivators rushed to echo, "Yes, yes, we should indeed make a good impression."
One by one, those present were eager to introduce themselves to the Six-Eared Macaque and Master Xuanzang, fearing they would remain unrecognized.
The Six-Eared Macaque took down everyone’s names, one by one. Although they were all minor demons, there might be a dark horse among them, and since they were all cultivators, becoming friends with them would not break any religious rules. It was an ideal situation for all concerned.
Gradually, Xiong Daoren began to sense that something was amiss. He was the host of the banquet, yet everyone had started to fawn over Master Xuanzang and that hairy monkey.
"I say, doesn’t Master Xuanzang have a kasaya?" Xiong loudly interjected. "That kasaya, oh, it really is powerful! It’s because of this kasaya that I came to know Master Xuanzang."
"Oh?" The spirits perked up with interest. "Brother Xiong, what’s the story between you and the kasaya?"
"That fire at the Guanyin Temple, you all should know about it. It was through this incident that I came to know them," said Xiong Daoren. "I was going to help put out the fire and as I passed by a room, I saw this kasaya. That kasaya truly was a treasure; as soon as I saw it, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. In a moment of folly, I took it, only to later find out that it belonged to none other than Master Xuanzang. I returned the kasaya to him, and from one thing to another, we came to know each other."
The creatures were greatly surprised, "So there is such a story in between, it seems this kasaya is indeed a treasure, Mage, why not bring it out for us to have a look."
"This..." Xuanzang was not too keen on displaying the kasaya in such a setting, but they had already pushed him to this point, and if he didn’t bring it out now, it indeed might seem unreasonable.
Moreover, when they came yesterday, the Black Bear Demon also reminded them to remember to bring the kasaya.
"Of course you can see the kasaya," the Six-Eared Macaque said with a smile, "only this kasaya was bestowed upon my master by Bodhisattva Guanyin. You may look, but don’t you dare secretly take it like Brother Xiong did, or else Bodhisattva Guanyin will come to settle the score."
While the Six-Eared Macaque said these words with a smile, letting all the cultivators and creatures know the value of the kasaya, it also made them aware that this treasure was not to be trifled with.
Bodhisattva Guanyin is still watching from above, and should anyone dare to meddle, Bodhisattva Guanyin would certainly not spare them.
The kasaya had such an imposing background that it indeed frightened some of the more timid creatures. Although they were very curious about the magic artifact, they were even more afraid of Guanyin’s retribution.
Since they couldn’t guarantee having no greed at all, it was better not to look. Out of sight, out of mind, it was better not to look.
"I can’t do it, I’d rather not look, I fear Bodhisattva Guanyin’s majesty. Since the kasaya is so precious, just one glance could maybe risk half of my fortunes, I won’t look!"
One started, and several other timid ones also dared not look.
"It’s true, I won’t look either. I can’t guarantee I’ll be free of any greed. Since it’s like this, I agree with them, I won’t look either."
"Indeed, I’m not looking at it either. I can’t ensure that I won’t desire to take it once I see it. Greed should not be provoked, for if it is, it cannot be extinguished, and that would lead to a serious issue."
Afterwards, the number of people and creatures saying they wouldn’t look began to grow, and in the end, when asked again, there wasn’t a single one who wanted to look.
This just happened to achieve the result the Six-Eared Macaque wanted, and he put on a quite regretful expression and tone.
"I originally wanted everyone to take a good look at the kasaya bestowed upon my master and me by Bodhisattva Guanyin. I didn’t expect you wouldn’t want to see it at all; it’s quite disappointing. Well, since none of you want to see it, then I won’t bring it out either."
"Hey, not so fast, they might not want to look, but I do," a clear voice exclaimed.
The Six-Eared Macaque paused, and for a moment thought it was Wukong speaking. He looked at the person who had just spoken, then realized it wasn’t Wukong but a cultivator accompanying Xiong Daoren.
"So, fellow cultivator, you want to see this kasaya? That’s good. Originally, when we came to the Buddhist Robe Assembly, Brother Xiong told us to bring the kasaya. We brought it, but once here, it turned out that no one wanted to see it. Honestly, I was quite disappointed. Now it seems there is someone who does want to see it."
The Six-Eared Macaque paused for only a second or two before quickly recovering. He spoke, flattering smoothly.
"I thought before that everyone was so afraid of Bodhisattva Guanyin’s majesty. I didn’t expect that there were still people who were not afraid. Just right, I will now bring out the kasaya."
"Go ahead, I’m not afraid of Bodhisattva Guanyin," Wukong said with a smile on his face, cursing in his heart, "You little thing, still thinking of using Bodhisattva Guanyin to pressure me, not even checking if you’re up to the standard."
