Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 767 - 766: Six-Eared Macaque Admits to Stealing Food
Master Zhenyuan was nearly startled by the man’s seemingly unwavering confidence, where did he get the conviction that he was sure to win, when Master Zhenyuan hadn’t even said anything yet.
However, surprise was surprise, but there were still matters that needed discussing. As Master Zhenyuan felt the powerful destiny surrounding the man, he said, "Young Master, if I win, then you must give me all of the destiny you carry. What do you think of that?"
"Destiny?" Chen Nuo said, looking around as if he truly didn’t understand what this destiny was all about.
Master Zhenyuan, though he wanted his destiny, wasn’t prepared to hide this fact from him. He explained, "As the name implies, it is your destiny. Those with good destiny lead smooth lives and might even have a chance at becoming immortals or achieving Buddhahood. Your destiny is strong, so, Young Master, are you really willing to wager this with me?"
"Even after the master has explained it, I still don’t quite understand what this destiny is," Chen Nuo said with a smile.
"I only read the Four Books, the Five Classics, and books on alchemy; I’m not much interested in anything else, so I don’t know what you’re referring to. But since we’re making a bet, naturally I will agree to your proposal. Rest assured, I will surely win this matter," he declared confidently.
Master Zhenyuan did appreciate the man’s confidence, and more so, he was curious to see how this man would accomplish what he could not.
Chen Nuo smiled and addressed Mingyue, Qingfeng, and the Six-Eared Macaque, who were still arguing, "Stop quarrelling over such a trifle. A Ginseng Fruit is hardly a matter of consequence."
Although Qingfeng and Mingyue admired the man, admiration was just that; he wasn’t their master. When it came to important matters, they would still heed their own master’s words.
Qingfeng looked back at Master Zhenyuan and, seeing a nod, got the message. He tugged lightly at Mingyue’s sleeve, passing on the message.
Mingyue was quick to catch on; after all, the two men were brothers and had lived together for so long—an unspoken understanding was not at all surprising.
The Six-Eared Macaque, although not knowing who this person was, or whether he was part of this temple, followed Qingfeng and Mingyue’s lead and also addressed the man as Young Master.
"Thank you, Young Master, for breaking up the fight. Otherwise, who knows how long it might have gone on," the Six-Eared Macaque inwardly breathed a sigh of relief. To have a fool resolve the situation for him, and a fool whose words carried weight, who wouldn’t be pleased? 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Chen Nuo chuckled to himself, overhearing the Six-Eared Macaque’s muttered words. He had intended to give him a lesson, but given the importance of the Ginseng Fruit, he chose not to dwell on the matter.
"Little Master, it’s just a fruit. Whether eaten or not, it doesn’t really matter—only the children care about such things. It’s not worth mentioning," Chen Nuo said with a smile.
The Six-Eared Macaque felt it was necessary to be careful with such details, so he said, "Thank you, Young Master, for intervening. But I really didn’t eat the fruit."
"Whether you ate it or not, the fruit is both sour and astringent; it’s certainly not a treat," commented Chen Nuo, making it seem as if the fruit was indeed hard to eat.
The Six-Eared Macaque, having just let his guard down, almost didn’t catch on and was about to protest that the fruit was sweet, not sour.
But luckily, he caught himself and watched the Young Master warily. It seemed as though he had come to help, but in reality, he was testing him, "Is that so? It’s sour? That’s good I didn’t eat it then—I can’t stand sour things."
"That’s true, but each fruit is different. The one I ate was really nasty. How about the one you ate? Was it tasty?" Chen Nuo asked.
"Tasty," Six-Eared Macaque replied.
No sooner had Six-Eared Macaque finished speaking than Chen Nuo smiled at him.
He suddenly realized that he might have let slip something significant. Before he could explain, Mingyue and Qingfeng had already started scolding him.
"Well, look at you. You sure can put on an act. Didn’t you keep saying you didn’t eat any? If you didn’t eat it, how would you know whether the fruit was tasty or not?"
When Six-Eared Macaque talked to this person, he was only guarding against his previous statements, never expecting that every word this person said was a trap. But merely based on one sentence, to make him admit it—that was utterly impossible.
So Six-Eared Macaque stiffened his neck and said, "I just misspoke inadvertently. There’s no need to dwell on such a trivial matter. I said I didn’t eat it, and I didn’t."
By now, no one believed him, not even Xuanzang, whose face was flushed with anger. He had considered that maybe these people were falsely accusing his disciple, but he hadn’t expected that it was indeed his disciple who had eaten the Ginseng Fruit.
"Wukong, didn’t you tell your master you didn’t steal the Ginseng Fruit? What’s going on now? You actually lied. Wukong, you’ve really gone too far!"
Xuanzang was furious. If it weren’t for his disciple stealing the Ginseng Fruit, he wouldn’t be so humiliated. He had lived for so many years and had never been humiliated like this. His disciple’s actions were truly outrageous.
Six-Eared Macaque snorted, "Anyway, I realized that from the start, you never believed me. I said I didn’t steal the Ginseng Fruit, and you didn’t believe me. But when they said I ate the Ginseng Fruit, you just believed them."
Chen Nuo smiled and said, "Little Master, you might have misunderstood something. It wasn’t us who said you ate the Ginseng Fruit, it was you."
"That’s because you intentionally tempted me into misspeaking. If it wasn’t for you, I would never have mentioned eating the Ginseng Fruit."
Six-Eared Macaque pointed at Chen Nuo, ready to break and let everything fall into ruin. As long as he stuck to his story and refused to admit he had stolen the Ginseng Fruit, there was nothing they could do to him.
Chen Nuo looked at the Ginseng Fruit on the tree and sighed, "It really is a pity. The fruit took so many years to mature. You ate it, that’s one thing, but to stealthily eat so much of it, that is far too selfish."
"You slander me! I clearly only ate one!" Six-Eared Macaque blurted out, then froze.
If earlier he could still feign ignorance and say he had never eaten the Ginseng Fruit, now that was utterly unfeasible. He had already admitted as much, so plainly that there was no way to deny it anymore.
Qingfeng and Mingyue looked at Six-Eared Macaque, "So it was you who ate the Ginseng Fruit and refused to admit it. Now, look what has happened. You’ve admitted it yourself. Now, Monk, you see, your disciple has already admitted to eating the Ginseng Fruit, so you might as well admit it too."
Xuanzang couldn’t believe that at this point, he still had his own role to play. He shook his head, "Little Immortal Boy, I didn’t eat the Ginseng Fruit."
